Would Wicked work as a film? (Even if it was directed by Baz Lurhman....)

There have been many rumours about Wicked becoming a film, and also rumours about Baz Lurhman directing it.
I don't see how it would work as film, especially after the success of the stage version. A lot of the moments on stage are only specialy because they are on stage, and on film I don't think they would work. For example, Defying Gravity is amazing because she defies gravity on stage, but on film that wouldn't have nearly as much 'wow'.
I know that Baz Lurhman is amazing and would probably do it justice, but I don't know whether I think it should just stay as a stage version and a book, and both are quite incredible!!
What do we think??

I would say maybe. I think they should do what they did with RENT. They should film it live on Broadway. As long as Idina Menzel is Elphapa I don't care what happens!!!!

I totally agree with you. Idina is the best Elphaba hands down.

There is a movie coming within 3-4 years. It's in pre-production now.
Oh yes! I would love for them to film the stage version if there will ever be a closing night! But in the filmed production won't match the intensity of seeing live rawness for yourself.
So sadly, I believe Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel are too old. Not that they weren't the best of the best, but they are just too old in appearance. And Idina herself believes so too, but she wants a part in the movie as a different character.
But I believe one solution is to have two young actresses to play the younger version of the characters, and when the years pass, Idina and Kristin could take over. But it looks like they aren't going for that technique.
Some candidates for directors are Ron Howard and Ryan Murphy. Although Ron Howard known techniques are "Fantasy-sequences" rather than musical numbers performed in the actual reality, he is a phemoninal director himself. Now I like Murphy's work on Glee, but I think he is too inexperienced.
Lea Michele is already strong candidate for Elphaba. She's a celebrity, but she undeniably have the stage training and vocals. And before Glee, I saw her as Wendla, a tragic, naive, sweet character on the Broadway stage Spring Awakening, and then when she came on Glee, she was this manipulative, bitter diva. And whether you hate her character, she does a good job of it. If she was able to make that shift in character acting, then she will be an amazing Elphaba. And she does look like a Nessarose.
But for Glinda, they need to start looking for the next Kristin.

I totally agree with that question. As much as it would be hard, I am all up for having a movie version of Wicked. After seeing it on stage, I fell in love with Wicked and it would be great to be able to own it on DVD. However, I agree that if they were to do it defying gravity would be an issue.
