As you all know, soft drinks contains lots of sugar. Soft drinks are one of the main factors why the kids nowadays become obese. In addition, it may also lead to other health concerns such as diabetics, etc... Knowing all this, do you allow your kids under 12 years old to drink soft drinks? How frequent do you allow and why? If you do not allow, is it because of the above factors, or other reasons? For me, I did allow them to drink, as we do buy them for our own consumption. However, we usually restrict them to once or twice a week when the temperature is too hot... We do know it's not good for them, but as my husband likes to drink soft drinks, we had to buy and stock up at home. When we drink the soft drinks, you know the eyes will be on you, so we do allow them to drink occasionally...

I have never allowed my kids any kind of soft drinks. They hve no health benefit and do nothing but cause problems. We avoid giving them caffeine also. I will allow a lemonade or unsweetened tea on occasion. I do not want my kids to grow up with health problems and as a parent it is my job to make sure they remain healthy. It makes me upset to see all of these overweight children. They can not be responsible for the decisions, it is all the parents fault. A kid should be healthy and active. Soft drinks and junk food just gives them bad habits as adults. My children occasionally get a fruit drink also. I read the labels more and more. Brands you think would be healthy are not always. High fructose syrup seems to be in just about everything.

Yes, you are right. Well, you are quite firm on your stand, which I admire. However, in my case, it's harder to control since we do buy the soft drinks to stock up at home ourselves. I do not really like these drinks too, but one of the medicines I'm taking requires me to take with fizzy drinks for better absorption. I had been taking for around 1 month plus, and will still have to take for around 3 months to control the conditions. I do know this sounds ridiculous (in fact, I do feel so too even till now), but this is as advised by my doctor... Well, I do hope that you can continue with this. For me, I'm happy as I managed to keep them under control, and they do not drink without our permission.

Occasionally my kids will have a soft drink but I don't allow them to drink them constantly. I prefer that they drink milk or juice or tea. I love iced tea and so they seem to drink more of it than anything else.

I guess parents and guardians do have an influence over the kids on the choice of drinks. It seems that your kids are influenced by you, and like to drink tea too. Well, I think it's easier to influence them when they are younger, as they often also like to drink whatever they see, and whatever we give them. My kids are also getting more sensible, and do know the unhealthy effects of soft drinks, and do drink more water and low fat milk nowadays. I'm very glad that they do understand.

I'm allowing my son to consume soft drink. But it's just the same with you gcorp09. There's always some restriction in order to control what they where able to consume for something that will actually inflict a things that we want to be happen to our child.

Yes, I agree with you. Restriction must be communicated to the kids so that they do know the limit. Or else, we will not be able to control their intake in the future. So far, my 2 kids are complying and not contesting with our decisions. I do hope that they do continue with this...
