the answer to this question about if you create John@yahoo.com, John@ymail and John@rocketmail.com- When you go to login to Yahoo Messenger you do it this way:
John@yahoo.com- to login
Yahoo ID: John
Password: Password
John@ymail.com you will login like this:
Yahoo ID: John@ymail.com
Password: Password
John@rockemail.com you will login like this:
Yahoo ID: john@rocketmail.com
Password: Password
They created this to expand the network. If you would like to login to more then one account at a time you CAN do that. You can do it in many ways. it's always a good idea to have more then one Yahoo ID - Use 1 for work, 1 for home , 1 1 for your phone.

The difference i think is that you have to type the whole email address if we signed in like hotmail and msn if we are signing in at windows live messenger.
They are all the same and its only a domain name that differs.
I still prefer @yahoo than the two new, because i only enter my i.d without @yahoo in yahoo messenger, that is only the difference i see.
