Federal Failures

The Federal government runs Social Security. It is fast approaching bankruptcy. The Federal government runs Medicare. It is fast approaching bankruptcy. The Federal Government runs education. Education runs through tens of billions of dollars each year and yet somehow manages to produce worse results virtually every year (and always demands more as a reward for utter failure). When government took over education from the states, America's children were ranked among the best in the world. Today our children's educational record is among the worst in the industrialized world. The Federal government funds Amtrak which bleeds through money every year for the U.S. taxpayer. In 1970 when Amtrak was founded, $300 million was approved by Congress to run it. That was 39 years ago and over $30 billion dollars in losses! Yet some blindly ignoring everything the Federal government has done before want the Federal government to take on more responsibility. What am I messing here?

I don't exactly know the real situation, but when talking about government spending and policies, we should not consider just the economical point of view, medicare was not created to make money, it was created to help a certain part of the population to have medical assistance, etc. If you are telling that those services don't work i completely understand your position, but judging them wrong just because they lose money seems not right to me.

he was more judging un needed government funded programs, Personally, I'm not a big fan of medicare, A maority of America treats their bodies horribly and then wonder why they are sick all the time, and then you have doctors who are only interested in money, and you can't really blame them after a 300,000 dollar investment into their education and then horribly high malpractice insurance fees... Personally I think Medicare, and the way the american people think about medical care, and the FDA's Control over that and the food industry, needs to be theroughly revised, there are too many bugs in the system, it needs to be reworked.

Social Security and Medicare when created was billed as a self sufficient program. Every dollar that was spent was already paid for. In a few years Social Security and Medicare will be paying out more than has funds for. Which by then either two things will happen, they will cease to exist or taxes will have to be raised.

I see your point, i was just saying that the fact that a program is costing more than what was initially believed or is losing money, automatically makes it wrong, we have to balance the services that the community gets and the money that the community has to pay and see what is the best option.

I could be wrong but doesn't the fed also run the Postal Service? I know it's small but they are so far in debt that the PS is thinking about stop delivering mail on Saturdays to make up the money.

The Post Office is actually holding its own. A downturn in the economy has forced the possible reduction of service, and the Post Office would make a tremendous profit if it had been allowed to operate as a money making enterprise (the fact that it is run by the government has affected its bottom line in customer prices, not value of service). All private companies that compete with the Post Office show how bad privatization in this area could be.

Nothing. The federal government cannot do as good of a job as the local government can do, and they cannot even compete with private industry. Social Security, Medicare, and Education is not something the Federal government is authorized to handle under the Constitution. Medicare and Social Security are income redistribution and government healthcare programs which have proven to be failures, while Education is supposed to be handled at the Local and State levels. Medicare is a fine example of why government healthcare will not work. There are very few things that the Federal Government is authorized to do, and it should stick to only those things.

Federal governments has few responsibilty and cannot even successfully handle those roles. Take for instance roads, there is a section of 1-40 in by state that has been worked on for 5 years.

Good day.. I could understand and even accept that government can make mistakes specially in circumstances wherein it has limited control like what happened in our economic downturn. At least it was an honest mistake. What I can't tolerate is when graft and corruption is the cause of the problems in a country.

LOL, I love this post. "The Federal government runs Social Security" Remember the "Social Security Lock Box"? Before George W. Bush, Social Security had a huge surplus. But, George though it would be a better idea to give that money to his rich friends. That sure worked out great didn't it? "Education runs through tens of billions of dollars each year and yet somehow manages to produce worse results virtually every year (and always demands more as a reward for utter failure)" I thought that No child left behind was suppose to correct this problem? Another Bush idea that didn't work (see a pattern yet?). "The Federal government funds Amtrak which bleeds through money every year for the U.S. taxpayer. In 1970 when Amtrak was founded, $300 million was approved by Congress to run it. That was 39 years ago and over $30 billion dollars in losses!" You are 100% correct about Amtrak, But Amtrak is run by a corporation that has a CEO. George W. Bush thought that one of men that ran this company into the ground did such a good job that pick him to become the secretary of the treasury (John Snow). Mr. Snow ran the company into the ground and walked away with $72.2 million in income 2003. So, now you know where $72.2 million of that $30 billion came from.

Bush didn't touch Social Security at all. Clinton however did. Tell us some more lies.... and provide the damn links to at least try to back those lies up.

You're not missing anything. And the really bad thing is that the Federal government is gaining control over more and more, so you know what will happen to the car industry, the banking industry, etc. And many Americans don't see anything wrong with the government taking control of everything.
