How do I get my stories published, either online or any other form

Though working in the IT industry just as I have always wanted, I've never let go of my other dream of becoming a writer. While in high school and college, I have written poems, essays and short stories. While reading Stephen King's novel, Duma Key, I suddenly had the urge to write again. So posted the short stories I made back in college at my blog site. However, I wanted to reach a wider range of audiences. Would you guys and gals have any recommendation as to how I could get my works published, online or in any other form?

When my book is finished and ready to go I'm probably going to self-publish through www.lulu.com . I looked into a few different sites and this was the one I was most impressed with.
