My daughter isn't just scared of thunderstorms, she is terrified of them! She will get so upset and start crying over them. It doesn't matter what you do to try and comfort her, she is still scared to death. A few years ago we had some bad storms with tornadoes and it killed a few people, including a couple children and I think she remembers when that happened and maybe that is why she gets so terrified. Do your children get terrified of storms?

My little sister didn't until a few months ago when they were at church and a tornado about ripped the roof off and so everyone was praying and the other kids were hysterical and she asked if they were going to die and I guess no one told her that God would protect her and them because I guess they said they might die and ever since she been afraid even if it starts to rain a little she used to love playing in the rain and we had trouble keeping her out of it before this and now she just huddles scared and wants to watch the weather channel which she never was interested in before, I have tried many times since then since people were stupid enough to scare her like that..that god will protect her and wouldn't let anything happen to her, sometimes it works okay..but other times when it is thunder and lightening and we have hail the size of golf balls..it still scares her she gets really scared. I also have a niece on my husbands side that is terrified of storms. She just always was since I knew her.

My son is fascinated by them. He's 7 and when there's thunder and lightening he's sitting at the window watching the sky just enthralled. He laughs and claps and jumps up and down. It's all very exciting to him. I don't know if he'll ever be afraid of them. I know I never was. Maybe his enthusiasm is because he's feeding off of my own fascination with them.

My daughter feels the same about thunderstorms. What i do during those times is to just keep her close to me and read books with her in a calming voice. At times I explain to her that its the Lord's voice saying 'HI' but its really loud for everybody to hear. hehe.

My 2 yr old grand daughter runs to her mom and cried loud hearing the roar of thunders before. She would shout and cry and go to bed during thunderstorm, After explainng to her that it's alright it would just soon be over, she's no longer crying this time but just would keep quiet in one corner.

As a child I was never really terrified of thunder storms. I would sometimes get started by the loud thunder claps, but I always knew I was afe in the house, even if the power went out. However, our dog was super-afraid of thunder, and would howl, shake, and hide until the noise stopped.

My daughter was deathly afraid of thunder, but she is getting much better. Before, when there was a thunderstorm at night, she became a ninja lol. She would crawl into bed with me or her brother, and we wouldn't notice until we went to turn over and roll onto her! But I have been telling her over and over that thunder is nothing but a really loud noise (she's 5, we'll get into the technical stuff about thunder later) and she has been getting better. There was at least one storm this week, and she stayed in her own bed all night!

My children seem to take after me. I LOVE thunderstorms! The moment I know one is coming, I can feel my adrenaline start to rush through my veins. I'll go out on the front porch just to watch the lightening and feel the wind and rain on my face. They are the same way.

Oh, man! I do that, too!!! I adore thunderstorms! I used to live in a house with a deck that had a roof over it. When I heard thunder, I'd take my place on the deck and wait for the lightning show.
My husband and I were out shopping a couple of nights ago and, when he was putting the bags in the truck, I noticed a rather small cloud above us. Lightning was all over this cloud! Behind it, above it, inside it and in front of it, going horizontally. It was the most awesome cloud I've ever seen!
I'm glad to know I'm not the only one crazy enough to head OUTSIDE when a storm is coming! LOL

My daughter is more fascinated by storms than anything. Early this spring we had a bad storm that knocked down some trees in our neighborhood leaving us without power for 4 days. My daughter loved it because the first night the power was out we treated it like camping in our house. We lit candles, roasted marshmallows and read stories snuggled under the blankets. And the rest of the days we had sleep overs at her Nana's house (which she loved).
Maybe you could just try turning a scary situation into something fun. Maybe you could try playing games with your daughter, tell stories or just do anything fun to get her mind off of the storms.

My oldest one never liked storms and still doesn't like them. I don't know why since I've always loved storms and didn't raise her to be afraid.

My son is scared of thunderstorms he is scared to sleep in his own bed when one arrises. He espesially gets scared when electrity goes out he thinks something is going to get him. He will scream and carry on. He doesn't like storms at all. He stays really close to me when a storm comes. I have to admitt I am alittle scared of them myself though. I make sure is a flashlight and candles in the house always.

My childern love thunderstorms. When I was growing up my parents always told me that When there was a thunderstorm it was Santa making our christmas presents so that is what I ahve told my children. So now when we have a storm even though they may get a fright with a big boom of thunder they try and guess what santa is making each time too!!

Our kids are grown now but they were scared of thunderstorms when they were little. At one point all 3 use to try to get in bed with us. They felt safe and protected when in our bedroom during a storm. Eventually they all slept on the floor at night if we had storms.
It's not uncommon for kids to be afraid of the noise. Her experience in the past with storms may stay with her for awhile but hopefully she will get over it with age. I live in Missouri too and the other night was extremely loud. Woke us all up including the dog.

Dear friend,
During my child days I used to go near window to see the thunder light, my parents used warn me and even scolded me for going near window. Even now I would like to see that lighting but avoiding any risks. I had not yet seen any child afraid of thunderstroms in our place. But my dog is afraid of it.

My children all love storms but they are afraid of earthquakes. We lived in California when they were growing up and went through several strong ones. I don't know what you can do to help your daughter. Do you have a children's science fair or a place where kids can learn about science? I think the best thing for fear is learning to know the enemy. If she knew what caused the storms and where to go to be safe it might help.

we don't get much rain out here in Utah. Strangely we've had a ton of thunderstorms lately. It frightened my son at first. I think he was shocked by it, more than anything, but now he seems to get a real kick out of the lightening and thunder and the sounds of the rain beating against the windows....and best of all the puddles that it leaves all over the ground. I don't know how to get your daughter less frightened about the rain... I guess it depends on her age.
My nephew hated the rain, until he realized that God sends the rain to help the flowers and vegetables grow. He spent a lot of time planting a garden with his dad, and now he is really excited when it starts to rain, because that means his garden will grow nice and tall.

No one in my family has ever been terrified of a thunderstorm...when I was growing up my mom and dad used to bring us on the covered porch to watch it downpour, and listen to the thunder and lightning. They taught us that when it thundered, the angels were actually bowling in heaven, and when it lightning out, the angel kids were driving the elders crazy by turn the lights on and off. A thunderstorm in the summer actually brings comfort to me, because I remember those days. As a parent, now, I naturally brought that comfort to my own children.
However, I will say that in our area of the states, we don't experience tornadoes or many hurricanes, so I can't imagine what it would be like to see people get killed from these storms. As a child, if I had been aware of those events, we may have felt differently. The few hurricanes that we have gotten have truly amazed me to see the damage that it can cause.
