I started that discussion 2 days ago...

Yesterday I came across a discussion which was almost identical to one I'd started just a few days before.
I also recently started a discussion that was similar to a friend's discussion from quite a while ago. The friend sent me the discussion.
What do you do when you see someone with a discussion similar to yours? Do you respond or ignore it? Tell them of your discussion? What if 2 of your friends started the same discussion on the same day at different times, like a discussion about a news article... do you direct each friend to the other's discussion? Ignore one of them? Or respond to both as if they're each unique?

If I see it, I may try to respond to it, if I get the chance. As far as the link goes, I don't make it a habit to direct people to a discussion of mine if we have similar discussions. However, with the one in question I thought you might appreciate reading it as we have the same thought on the matter. I hope you didn't mind that I sent it to you.

I didn't mind and it's not what prompted me to start this... I have 2 friends who seem to always start the same news discussions, but they never see the other's. I think it's funny, sort of.

I have had times where I have started a discussion only to find one similar to it and also I have had it where I have come across some discussions similar to mine. To be honest for me it does not bother me if someones discussion is similar to mine, but I always feel like a copy cat if I do a discussion that is similar to someone elses haha. Mind you I have not started any for yonks so theres no chance of me copying anyone else!!

That's why I try to start them about personal things, or things I did today, stuff like that. I figure that way I have a better chance of it being original!

I have seen that and alot of the times I will just answer both if I can but try to do it differently. Itis hard coming up with new stuff all the time that is why I don't have as many discussions as I could. I have no problem seeing discussion like mine or answering identical ones as long as I know that the person didn't copy and paste the others discussion.

If you see a discussion that was clearly copied directly from yours, you should report it. Certain unscrupulous people have been known to do this in an attempt to earn quickly without any effort on their part.
Most duplicate discussions are not like this, though. It often happens that a news item inspires more than one person to post a very similar discussion within minutes of each other. It is often obvious that both discussions were actually being written almost simultaneously! Of course, we are supposed to search before posting a discussion so that we don't duplicate a topic but I don't think many people do this.
Sometimes two discussions may seem similar but when you look at them they each have a different angle on the same subject.

I didn't mean copied, I just meant they're both discussions about the same thing, that's all.

Mylott is around for over 3 years now. The chances are that similar discussions are around. I always search for discussions before I start my discussion to see if I am not repeating existing discussion...
The problem is, often search is not showing the doubling discussion...
Similar discussions are result of people reading news at the same time....as long as the title is not the same, it is OK....

I used to search, but sometimes I feel like a discussion 3 years old could be started again for some new answers.

I probably would just respond to both. When big news things happen there tends to be two or three if not more discussions on it by different people. I just go ahead and answer all of them. It helps them out and I get paid. Now if someone would copy a personal discussion, like say something about my kids that I started and they made a discussion like it then if it was a friend I probably would say something. If it was a stranger I would turn them in to mylot. Same ideas and story lines is one thing, but recreating someone's personal questions is creepy.

I have 2 different friends who always seem to start the same news type discussions... I wish they'd be on each other's friends lists, maybe then one would see the other started the discussion already.

it really depends.. some times i will ignore it just due to not having the time to respond to many discussions as is.. some times i will reply with the link i posted in my discussion if they dont have much info or are asking about it (if its news 99.9% of the time i wont post unless i have a news link to back it up.. saves time on all those people that will just accuse you of making up stuff because they never read the news and live under a rock)
one time i accidently posted a similar discussion really soon after some one that was on my friends list and i felt really bad about it and i contacted them and said sorry about it.. what happen was it was about something on tv that night and i had started typing it out then got busy doing something else and when i finally sent it it was like 19 minutes after the other person but i had links in mine and of course my own opinion so it wasnt like they were identical.. but since it was so close i felt like i should say "hey sorry i didnt know" type note just so they wouldnt think i was stealing..

It has happened to me too. I must admit that I have been the offender and the victim too . I always try and search for the discussion before starting one, but the search is not that effective and I only realize the duplication in the similar discussions page just beneath the new discussion.
As far as replying to those are concerned, it is up to my mood. If the discussion grabs my attention and the wording are well put, I may just reply to the discussion. But if it the plain old type of discussion where I don't have anything new to add, I may well give it a skip.

For a while, someone would post a discussion similar to mione several days after I had posted. I felt that this was not a coincidence and could not htink why the person copied me as I am rubbish with discussions - I do not attract lots of responses. So i was not the ideal person really to copy from. But it happend 3 or 4 times. i did not do anything about it. I also do not search to see if a discussion has been made so I guess it is probable that I could start a discussion that had been doen by someone else.
If I see two discussions by friends I read them both as they may have a different slant on the same topic. NO, I haven'ty pointed it out to them either.

i dont think there are any problems with the similar kind of discussions but always see that you never copy others discussions as it is. Instead if you do not have any idea about starting a new discussion you can just refer other discussions and try to make it more intresting by adding most of your new ideas and views that will help you to earn much more from mylot but never copy from others discussions.

it had happened to me before when i was very new here that i had posted a discussion, then afterwards saw that it had a similar discussion too although not word for word of course, i was new here and i dont if i was suppose to look if there are discussions already that are similar to i want to start.
i posted a response to the other discussion similar to mine and said i had posted the same one too...
if two of my friends started the same i would post on both and probably tell the next one that this friend had also a similar discussion. of course my response to both will not be the same word for word...

I would share the link, and respond to the discussion with my input. You never know, they may have said something or put something there that you had missed from the article. I wouldn't mind, I guess I have gotten sore about it a few times, but now though I just don't mind. lol.

I see it all the time. You start a discussion and it doesn't get no responses but then the next day or so someone repeats it and it has like tons of replies. For me I get over it. There are days I get on here and see five discussions that are similar but reply to them all. It doesn't seem to matter.

Yeah, this has happened to me as well. What I prefer, is responding to them separately rather than directing him/her to that similar topic.
As, mostly I find some small thing different in them. And then, I mention that I found a similar topic around and you should do blah blah blah!!
Actually, when you direct the person to some other topic, it gives a feeling like, "my discussion was ignored, why?"
