When I first was learning to be frugal it was because I had to. I have been a stay at home mom for 8 years now and I was a stay at home wife before that. When the kids came and we needed all the diapers and supplys money was tight. I had to learn to use coupons and save as much as I could. After yeras of doing that I got to the point I was saving more then I needed to and I was able to set money aside. Now we are doing okay and I know it is because I was and am frugal. At first it was a need and now it is a priveledge. What motivates you to save?

When I first started I had just had my second child and would no longer be working outside of the home so we became a 1 income family. So it was really important to cut back expenses, plus we had two children in diapers which is not cheap. I got really in to saving money. I consider it part of my job to keep the families finances in check.

That is how I see it too. I dont work outside the home but my job is to make our one income feel like and streach like two. I think I make more saving money then I ever did and hour at an actual job. I just cant work 40 hours like I could at an every day job.

Yes.I am a bachelordom,I must be frugal to save money,if I do not have a job,I can also have a ordinary life. But if I married, maybe I should have one baby,I also should be frugal, because I want to give the baby a rich childhood.

Kids do cost a lot of money, they always seem to need things at the worst time.

What motivates me to save...of course it's the financial crisis we are experiencing nowadays. Many people are losing their jobs everyday. Many families all over the world are losing hope and I don't want to add to that number. That's why I'm saving the best way I can.

I do worry that my Hubby will lose his job and then we will be in trouble. I feel like I should have a better ammount of savings set aside but we always seem to get some bill that needs to be payed first. It is hard to make progress.

Well like may people I started being frugal when money was tight and having gone from a well paid job to unemployment I suddenly got a reality check to how much money I would waste on the unimportant but also the money that could be saved by using vouchers. Since then the frugal mentality has always stayed with me and hate wasting money on frivolous/ unrequired purchases.

I have always been pretty frugal....at least since I have been an adult. I just always seemed to make a game out of it. I always wanted to see if I could save the most money on food, clothing, utilities, etc. Recently I lost my job (due to the wonderful economy) and now I am even more challenged by ways to save money. Of course, lately I can't seem to save enough. I try to cut corners as much as possible while still trying to live comfortably. Our kids are pretty good at saving money as well. They still have much weaker moments as my two little ones are 11 and 13 (which are hard years to be "frugal")...anyways, they still manage to count their pennies, which is a good start.

There is nothing like a job change to help you with some frugal motivation. I was brought up to not spend more then I made but my parents never did the coupon thing. It was new to me when I started and it took a while to get used to the looks and comments. Great job on teaching your kids to think about their finances. That is such a big deal to me. My Hubby came to me financialy dumb and it was hard to teach him as an adult.

LOL...yes, my hubby came to me "financially dumb" as well. But I have taught him well....well, in somethings (he still slips), but he is great at the grocery store. He can spend HOURS in there trying to save 10-20 dollars. I think it is great! Hey and lets face it 20.00 a week really adds up over a year.

Hey, I count every penny so $20 adds up fast to me. Im still trying to teach my hubby but he learns a little more each day.

Its a nice attitude of someone to be frugal. You can have many things you wish to if you will be more curious to save and thrifty. You can buy other things because you did the saving of coupons for fortune and luck. Now you did it and I'm sure you will have more harmonious living if you are like that.

Every day is another little step but Im sure many years from now we will appreciate the work we have done and the position we are in then.

I think I was just born that way. I like to see how far I can stretch a dollar. I get a kick out of shopping only the sales and seeing how I can stock my pantry. More than anything, though, I like to see my savings grow so I can do some of the things that I want to, like buy a pickup or another place to live without selling this house.

It is like a game for me too. I love to see how well I can do. I love to know that if I dont feel like shopping for a while I dont have to. Id love to watch my savings grow faster but the bills are comming faster then the money is.

Once you get it in your head to be frugal I dont think it ever goes away. I think once you know what a good deal is nothing else is good enough.

Keeping finances of the family in order is certainly a great job for moms and wives. Being frugal means to differentiate family needs from the wants. Discounts and coupons help a lot. But in the Philippines, we dont have much coupons. Just the 'Buy 1, Take 1' kind of offer. Problem is, the expiration date is near thats why you cant really save much coz you have to consume it right away. The need to be frugal is to have your priority on expenses. Know that your husband is taking part in this step to obtaining financial freedom as well.

That is a great point. Having your prioritys in place helps a lot. You can never get where you need to go if you dont know where that is.

I save because, i want to get somewhere. I have had a long life of being broke, and having to pay out babysiters, medical bills, bills, and you name it. I am a grandmother now, and have flown the coop. I am saving to make my life a little better in the future, and perhaps i will leave a nice nest egg for my family also.

We have been broke most of our lives but we are for the most part happy and to me that is more important. We are trying to get our bills taken care of and get out of debt. We were doing so well a while back then we had car trouble and bought new cars. Now we are in it for a few years again.

I can't remember when we haven't been thrifty. For many years I was a sah mom while my husband worked construction. Hubby often would get laid off for months at a time. It just made sense to stock up up on things during the time the money was coming in well. It also made sense to do that stocking up on sale items. Coupons and watching for rebates was a big part of grocery shopping. I guess at first it was pure neccessity, it became a point of self respect. Hubby worked very hard for our income, I could at least be careful to spend it well. We had some years where it wasn't a need to be careful with the money but by then it was such a habit we just continued. Once again, in our senior years we find our income low, but we live well due to our careful habits.

My Hubby works construction too so I understand the high times and the low times. We have a great pantry that we keep well stocked for the low times. We work hard to make our one income streach like we want it too.

The thing that motivates me to be frugal is not having a job over a year now, after working for 32 years. Its quite scary and I have to watch every penny I spend.

That would scare me to. My Hubbys job is in construction so it is never really stable. I think I should have 6 months of bill money set aside but that is easier said then done. I try to set a little aside each month then I end up having to dip into it. I guess I need to work harder at being frugal.

We help the poor when we can. We do regular financial donations and donate food from our pantry. I know that what we donate isnt enough to sustain a family but my little bit plus the little bits of others can.

I have to save money because I used to be in bad financial situation years ago. In my life, I used to have a lot and have nothing. Saving is giving me security for time when I need it...

Saving does make you feel a lot better about life. I have a small savings account and I love to make even the smallest deposit. I have to dip into it now and again but at least it is growing a bit here and there.

I started trying to be frugal when i found that by saving money on everyday items, bills and the things like that i can do the extra little things like travel once in a while that i wouldnt be able to do otherwise. I might have things like a pc, or trips but i am very careful about saving the money and making money online to beable to do the extras.

I love to travel. We put travel in our budget because it is a proirity to us. Our kids will only be little once so we try to take full advantage. If I wasnt saving money then we would never be able to travel.

I guess I am frugal by nature. I think its fun to be frugal and find ways to go green.. I know some of my relatives think it's crazy and I'm sure they find it boring and probably think I'm a cheapskate - but so be it. I believe I'm the smart one as I save my family cash by being frugal - the cash I save can either be spent in some other ways or saved up for stuff. Also money can only be spent once so who's the smart one!? I also believe more and more Americans has becomes frugal due to the resession just because they have had to, which in my opinion is good the way things has turned out.

Lack of money! That wil do it every time! Frugal is good. I grow veggies in pots and potatoes in containers and all sorts of things to try and just maintain our standard of living - but it is so difficult at times. and at times we just need to splurge a little and treat ourselves to somethinga little extravagent

Lack of money. That is well said. I think that is my problem too. I love to grow vegis. This year my plants are all doing okay but they are not producing at all. I have on tomato plant that is giving me tomatoes, in fact we will be eating some for lunch today.

The key to personal success is saving and in doing this we are able to appreciate the things we have achieved more. Sometimes it is things that you have outlined let us look for ways to save but then after practicing it for so long it has become a good habit and so we continue it. The things that I want to do in life is what motivates me to save because if I don't do this then my goals will just be dreams instead of reality.

One of the first lessons that helped me be more frugal was to like what I had, and use what I have. Now I live without a fry pan and my family thinks I am nuts. My sauce pan works just as well so why buy a new one if I dont need it. Plus it is one less thing I have to find a place to store it.
