How do you go about naming your pet?

With the hamster that me and my housemate got, we decided that it should have a drama name as we are both drama students at university. We also wanted something a bit more unusual, so not Shakespeare as an example! We thought we would be getting a female hamster and so settled on Columbina - a Commedia dell arte character. When we went to get hamster they didn't have any female hamsters so we got a male. We decided to go with another Commedia character - Sylvio and it fits well as he his completely grey. So perhaps you could think of an author or someone you admire to name your pet?
