they thought it was too ignorant? my parents wouldnt let me read dr Seuss or watch movies like charlie and the chocolate factory and most cartoons or children's movies etc.. they thought they held no value as far as intelligence so why expose me to it.. (unless it was religious based.. then they would let me watch a freaking rock for an hour if they thought it would pass as christian) isn't being a kid all about enjoying and experiencing silly things that may not be "intelligent" but are fun??

I was just the opposite.....I exposed my kids to just about anything once....if I thought it was in bad taste then they didn't get to watch it again.....but if it were funny and light it was more then okay...yes being a child is supposed to be about silly and fun things......not just for learning.....let them be a kid!

Moonlit... I was like you My parents wouldn't let me watch anything like Bewitched, soap operas or read anything if it had no value to educate me..so as i left i watched everything i wasn't allowed and thought WTF??? or books?? My children have freedom of anything to read, watch or make their own minds up of what they wanted and now the grandbabies are getting that treatment too. Had the same experience of religious based only..couldn't even date but made up for it later..lol

I WISH!!! I didn't mind the movie Charlie And the Chocolate Factory, that was a good movie, but as a kid things like Seuss, and other kid things just bothered me, because I wanted more adult things, but oh no, my older relatives thought I needed to be a child!!! I wish they'd thought more like your parents.

that would be irritating wanting to be older and more mature and not allowed to be

That's just plain crazy! Dr. Seuss wrote some of the most intelligent literature for children that there has been. There are so many amazing lessons to be learned from Seuss and they are taught in a manner that children respond to. Adults too. Adults read the books to their kids and neither really even realize they are being taught something because of the absurdity of it all. Lessons on racism/discrimination (The Sneetches), loyalty/keeping promises (both of the Horton stories), war (The Butter Battle Book), the importance of imagination and how people tend to lose their imaginations as they get older (...Mulberry Street)...and so many others.

everything can not be fun...whereas it amuses children. it is advisible to be selective becoz the children may be misguided by it.

i mean i agree things should be monitored but those are only like 2 examples of many things i wasnt allowed.. i think being too strict isnt good for a kid either.. kind of as if you had no rules.. either extreme isnt helpful

Hi Moon.....Oh my what is childhood if you can't believe in dragons and fairies? Children have to assume the responsibilities of adulthood soon enough without robbing them of what little bit of childhood and imagination they can have. I was raised in a christian home, too but I was also allowed to believe in Santa Claus,Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy. My children and grandchildren have been raised the same. There is nothing wrong with a child watching cartoons and playing make believe and for those who see wrong in this you must have had a terrible childhood and your children must have had worse. flutterby

By the time there was a television at home I was a little grown up and almost understood what was right and wrong. But my family had never taken any objection to me watching any kind of movies. They would only explain to me that whatever is seen in movies should not be repeated in real life!

lol yeah that to me would be the better option than to not let them see it at all.. i really doubt cat in the hat books would have rotted my brain

I'm that type of parent to an extent. I just really hate Spongebob because I think it's stupid. I won't let the kids watch it. It's basically the only child cartoon I won't let them watch, but I just don't like it. No, my parents never forbid me from watching something.

My parents never top me from watching any movies because they think that each movie has its own unique lessons and ideas.but somehow certain movies they don't really encourage me to watch it but yet will not stop me to do so.Partly because they think that i should be able to decide for myself what is good and what is not for myself.I get to watch most of my favourite movies and cartoons when i was young, such as power rangers, power puff girls and many more. The experience when you are a child is a very useful and stronghold in doing well next time..

i agree...but my childhood experience is slightly different from yours. i wasn't allowed, of course, to watch adult movies. but that's just it. other than that, pretty much anything goes on in our tv. my parents didn't really care as long as we kids behaved. hehe. and again no adult scenes.

I am sorry for you. And I am sorry for your parents. I think they are so keen on making you a better person that they have forgotten that you are indeed a person. The want to make sure every moments are educational in some ways but forget that we can learn not only by seeing how success others are but also through the experiences of failure. To me, everything can give us a lesson in one way or another, just whether we know how to grab it. More importantly, they forget that we only have one childhood and if miss out the time during childhood to enjoy. It is just lost forever.
