Wi-Fi is short for Wireless Fidelity where in you can get a free internet access if you are in a specific location... A Wi-Fi is limited to a particular place... Examples of places with Wi-Fi are starbucks, seattle's best and all those other coffee shops...a way of enticing more customers.

Hi,
As explain other myLotter above, WIFI means wireless Fidelity. Wifi frequency used to reach broadband who use hotspots area.
This Local Area Network can access with wireless connection like wifi. But sometime, have different range to access it. The administrator who maintain this hotspots know the best range connection area that can use with wifi.
To using wifi, sometime we can access for free in public area. But in Local business place, sometime protected with password to maintain the user who can access. Indeed, restricted to the owner and the community to have effective and efficient network with lower prices.
