Is Medical Weed a Good Thing?

I've been hearing a lot of pros and cons about legalizing weed for health purposes. What do you think about that? It seems that the weed controls pain for many cancer patients, and that to me sounds like a good thing. Melissa Etheridge said that she used it while on chemo because it took away her nausea. I've been on chemo already, and I took a new pill that kept my stomach settled, so I didn't need weed. It worked the whole 6 months I was on it. I believe that weed is milder than the other drugs out there, but I also hear that it can destroy brain cells and affect your memory and thinking. What do you think about it? Do you know someone who's using it for this purpose? Thanks! (P.S. I used the word "weed" cos the real word got me the message about mature content, and I didn't know what else to do!!)

As a cancer survivor that used weed during my chemo to deal with the nausea and lack of appitite I feel that weed should be legalized. I dont know about it helping with pain as when I used it, it only helped with the nausea and my loss of appitite. When I was going through chemo the pain was not what got me it was how I was unable to eat. Nothing tasted good and when I did eat I was sick. When I used weed that was no longer an issue. I do know that weed has been used for other illnesses as well such as HIV, glucoma, and many other things. I feel that it would benifit the medical field if it was used as a medicine for people that have tried every other medicine to no avail.

I'm glad to hear you're a survivor, I am too! And you know I never thought about the appetite part...chemo takes so much of that away, and you really need your nourishment at that time. So the weed also gives that back to you. Glad to know it did you good!!

I don't seriously know, maybe not in excsessive use, but i do not think it's bad in temporary use. I do not find any problems with using weed in medical things, but otherwise it's not a good thing.

I've seen too many times what it does to people's brains. It changes some people radically. Others get away with it longer. It is an absolute fact that it affects your brain.

Yes, that's true, but if someone has a terminal disease, and they're in constant pain, I think it would work well for them, as well as make them more calm. Thanks for your response.

marcyyyy, first i hope that you never have to on chemo again and my thoughts and prayers are with you. . also glad to hear that a pill helped you. But I have heard that it does have many wonderful uses for people who are ailing.... Glaucoma for one. As far as destroying your brain cells .. i think what it does is fry a few of them from your short term memory .. . if you take too much of it. . you cant remember things like where you put your keys and stuff like that. But my way of thinking is that it is a natural product. . it isnt something that the chemists brew together . . so in terms of other uses .. like recreational uses . . .like anything if used in moderation can be an enjoyable thing! happy days to you! and of course Lotting!

Thanks for your thoughts and prayers...it's been 10 years since I've been on chemo, so I don't wanna do it again!! I didn't know that glaucoma is helped by weed. My husband is going in soon to have some laser done on both eyes for that. It doesn't really bother him, it's very early, and the procedure takes place right in the doctor's office! Take care!

As bad as weed seems to be bad, it is better for you then alot of the things people do already. For instance, for every pack of smokes you smoke, you lose 7 minutes of your life. For every (lets say 12 joints is in one pack) pack of weed you don't lose any part of life, unless of course you are using it on the road or around machinery. So it should, in my opinion, be legalized. They wouldn't need to worry about people getting lung cancer over it either.

Wow! 7 minutes of your life for one pack!!! It probably is safer to use the weed. But I think it should just be legal for the medical reasons. Thanks!!

Honestly, if it can be refined, or synthesized, and made into an extended release pill.. it would be better. I know several people who have prescriptions for weed for pain relief, or eye problems or whatever. And every one of them has the SAME problem. They're potheads. Remove the euphoric, make it a pill, and see what happens. It would be like your kid wanting a drink, but instead of water doing the job, it has to be chocolate milk. Small, controlled dosage, and not in the relaxing, recreational way of smoking it. Make it clinical. Make it antiseptic. make it businesslike. And the people who actually benefit from it, will stick with it. but Johnny D, the rastafarian glaucoma patient, will suddely get better.

If someone was using it for their pain, as prescribed, it should be okay. The pain would have to be the kind that regular painkiller don't help. I see your point...some people would use any pain as an excuse to get some, but it should be an absolute last resort!!! by the way, welcome to MyLot!!
