I recall when I was probably 5 or 6 and living at my grand parents most of the time. My grandfather worked at Safeway as a store manager. He would bring me home boxes of these wonderful butter cookies. I loved them! Those were sweet times. GRams would fix a big breakfast every morning and gramps would ready himself for another day at the store. I still remember the smell of his aftershave in the bathroom. Do you have as sweet a memory of not necessarilly your grandparents but of your younger days. Say 4, 5 or up until 10 or 11. That early time in our lives.

I think my best memories was just being able to get up, get our chores done and then going out into the woods to investigate and play. The other best memory (and this was the best) was riding our horses to my grammas that lived quite a ways away. We would get there and there was always something good waiting for us to drink and eat. She always had her fudge ready for us too! YUMMY!

It is summertime, so I remember going to stay with my rural grandparents for a week or so at a time. No air conditioning, not even a swamp cooler. We would put sheets of linoleum outside on the porch or on the ground and sleep outside. If we rested in the daytime, you could look up at the Thunderhead clouds. They seemed to tower into eternity. Grasshoppers, crickets, tree frogs and cicadas all had their own special songs. The stars looked so close that if you concentrated you could almost see the earth rotating on its axis and watch them spiraling around you. We would eat lots of homegrown food. Any kind of jelly you could imagine on homemade biscuits, with home churned butter. Life was nourishing to the body and spirit at that time.

Hey Gert! That was so nice to read. I felt like I was right there. Only thing missing were the bats and I would have sworn you were discribing my gram and gramps place. My gram made this wonderful relish. I was just thinking of it the other day. Thanks for this nice look at your childhood.

One of my favorite memories is picking lilacs for my grandmother, I lived with her, all the kids in the neighbourhood knew she loved lilacs and they would pick them off the trees for her. I loved the smell of the sweet flowers in the house.

Your book? Interesting. Lilacs are lovely. I got them for my mom when she was dying. She loved them.
