Well that is the number of posts (responses + comments) you have made so far.
However, the comments you post in your own discussion are not counted here.
So, just keep posting and see the number rise!! Good luck!!
Yeah, when you cross 100 posts, you will have star like most of us have.
And on reaching 200, you can also use emoticons like this

the number next to your name means how many posts you have made in a discussion

It is the number of responses you have made so far. make it over 100 and you can upload photos into your discussion . Make it 500 you can open the cut and paste option. Try it and see the number increasing with each discussion.
