You Know That Thing That Guy Does?

Yeah, you know that thing that that one guy does? The one on that one show that's about that thing, and the guy does this thing...Oh, you know! This drives me insane! What? I'm a mind reader? There are only thousands of shows with guys doing things. I know which one you're talking about, how? How many of you have actually said something along these lines? What do you say to someone when they say something like this to you?

I usually make random guesses (preferably as unlikely as possible) which, in turn, irritates the hell out of the person who started the conversation.... like... You know those things? .. wide mouthed frogs??? No, those ones with holes in... ...polo mints?? No, you can put that stuff in them ...pepper pots??? Oddly enough the conversation always seems to end the same way...'never mind, forget it'

How about coming back with... You know that thing I do, where that guy ends up gripping his whatjamacallits with that pained expression on his face and cant do that thing where he puts one foot in front of the other for a few hours and cant do that other thing for several weeks.....

I have an 11 yr old that does this to me constantly. I feel like beating my face on the table when I have to try to translate one of her stories.

I keep having to tell her to take the word "Thingy" out of her dictionary. I don't even want to hear the word thing anymore.

To an eleven year old you can say, slow down and use descriptive words, Oh never mind, Bo's tried that with her son and he still does it. . .and he's way over eleven.

Heya, mimpi!*S* Sometimes my son starts to tell me something, but can't remember exactly what a person's name is, or forgets the name of a movie. The conversation goes something like this: Mom, you know that show where that guy does that thing? What is his name? What's the name of that movie where that guy does that thing? *Blank look on my face* Ummm, can you give me something more specific? *Frustrated tone from son* No! If I could, I wouldn't be asking you, now would I? It just drives me insane because I have NO idea what he is talking about, but he is convinced that I know exactly what it is he is trying to convey, and just giving him a hard time because I like to see him all upset and frustrated. And, you are not a dumbo! I guess that was kind of confusing.*L*

This one time, at band camp...... YOU know the camp. Yep, THAT one! Do you remember that dude that fell of the thingie with his whatsit hanging out? Yep, THAT dude! Oh man, that was pretty funny. And later, we all sat around the campfire singing that song. The one with that instrument and the lyrics in it! I like that song, it's one of my favourites. That food was good too. I especially liked the sweet stuff with the bits in it. Two discussions in as many days? What's going on then? This one's almost like that other discussion, but different. I like this one more.

Oooh, yeah! That sweet stuff with bits in it! I like that stuff. Except if it has those thinggies that I don't like in it. But, if it's the other stuff without those thinggies I don't like....

I have a natural out for all things tv related. Yes it is very annoying when people do this. Yes I do have friends who have done this in the past but once I use my out on them I never have to listen to this kind of stuff again. Here's my out, it is probably not true in your case but it is in mine. "I don't watch tv, you've been to my house, did you see a TV anywhere in my livingroom? Like right next to my computer maybe? I find television brain numbing, but if he's really that interesting let's look him up on youtube. What's his name?" My boyfriend does watch tv as have the two previous to him spanning at least the last 6-8 years. We do have a television, it is in our bedroom where I can hear it and sometimes my ears tune in if there's something that sounds interesting or if the news is on, but otherwise I find television to be completely brain numbing. I only watch two shows, the girls at my last club got me hooked on them. They are "House" and "Fringe" and I watch those online either without the commercials or with limited commercial interruption. It thus takes less time to watch each one.

I don't get that so much but something else. Have you ever had people that must be thinking their thoughts in their mind and think they ARE talking to you, but blurt out out loud in mid-thought? Like you're getting half the thought and not a clue what that person is talking about-------OR---- they are talking about someone THEY know but you don't but assume you know the person they're are talking about? Example: Friend: And then Margie had to go to the doctor since she's been having swelling in her legs. Me: (Thinking to myself: Whose Margie?) Friend: Oh and did you hear about Julie? Me: (Thinking to myself: Whose Julie?) Friend: you know her right? One of her dogs had to go to the vet. You get the idea...I think? Me: (Thinking to myself: nope don't know her)

Yep, get that one a lot from Hubby. He tends to pick up conversations from the week before and expects me to know what he is talking about right away. He doesn't say anything like, "Remember when we were talking about such and such, last week?" He just kind of launches into the conversation where we left it.

Usually it's "huh?" Followed by "dumb look". But sometimes it's "oh yeah that thing that guy does, you know, cool huh?"

Yes, I know exactly what you mean. When the guy does that thing, you know, you know, you know. No I do not know. Then somehow it is my fault for not knowing. Then I am in trouble for upsetting you know who. I was just minding my own business and suddenly I am insensitive for giving a flippant "I have not idea what you are talking about".

A good friend does something like this, you know, that thing when you can't think what it is, sort of, well, oh yeah, remember what you were saying. We will be discussing one topic and then the conversation lulls and she starts up again on what seems to be another topic, but my brain is still doing that thing it does you know, like a computer, thinking up thingys, oh yeah processing, what she said before. And I get this puzzled look on my face, because when I thought she was referring to her husband getting all frazzled and having to go home and have a lot to drink and then having to pee and pee , then I realize she's referring to her dog!

Ha ha ha... I get that a lot except I get that from a lot of women that comes into my work! I work at Home improvement store & I get a woman that comes up to me & goes, "You know that thing you hook up to a stove that comes out of the wall that looks like, you know, like, Ohhhh, I don't know... You have that?" Usually I tell her, "Oh, you mean that thing!!!! Yeah, that's in that aisle... ummm... what number is that aisle, you know... ohhhh... I don't know, yeah, check that aisle... You'll see in about oh, I don't know, ummmmmmm... Yeah, that aisle with the other things..."

I say, sorry. I do not watch TV, so I do not know. When I did watch TV, like a sucker I would take the time to ask things...to get them to describe the show. The new way is much simpler.

"Mom, the next time you go to the store can you buy the thing, that tastes really good, and it comes in a cup, and it has colors?" I know exactly what you are talking about. (Turns out she is talking about Trix yogurt.) My kids do it all the time to me.
