FREE Horses EVERYWHERE!!!

Well, near me anyhow. I've been offered 9 free horses and a mule in the last week alone! One of the horses is pregnant so should count her twice. People just can't seem to afford to care for their horses in this stinking economy. A friend of mine says where she lives, in the dessert, they are dumping horses off loose in the dessert to fend for themselves. (that's just cruel!) I did agree to take one of them in but had to refuse the others as I already have three horse rescues and 2 of those are in the midst of training (Parelli) and aren't yet being ridden. The one I'm taking in we don't feel has ever been ridden, either. And, honestly, there is no such thing as a 'free' horse once you pay the bills to maintain them properly. What's the horse situation like in your area of the world?

We have a horse farm right across from us, but I'm not sure of their situation over there. I haven't seen anything about free horses yet anywhere, so I hope it doesn't come to that. The horse in the dessert, that is just sad, and very cruel indeed. I hope that someone will rescue it. If I knew anything about horses, and had a big enough piece of land, I'd rescue any horse near me, then again, only if my fiance and I could afford to take care of it properly. Have a wonderful day.

Oh well then It will be a while before we're able to do any of that. I know it costs a lot, and I want to have a horse farm one day, but I don't know that we can do that yet. We're just starting off our life, getting married soon. I appreciate your comment and this discussion. I hope that the people who are letting go of their horses can find a good home for it, and not resort to shooting it.

No idea, I live in the 16th largest city in the U.S. and while I know they have horses around town, I really don't get out of town any more

That sounds like a really sad situation indeed for all those unfortunate horses. If a person has a horse I just can't understand him or her giving the horse away. I know this recession is challenging and having a horse is a big commitment. I have seen notices of horses for sale. I know charities are taking in some unwanted horses and ponies. It must be quite expensive to own one horse, two horses, three horses or more. Dumping horses sounds like a criminal activity. It would be lovely to see a mule.
