a friend and i were talking of pets and then he mentioned pussycats. i said that you can call it cats no need for pussycats. he said he prefer calling it pussycat. i didn't argue anymore but after the chat it could not get off my mind why cats are called pussycats when it could be simplified to cats? do you prefer calling a cat a pussycat or just plain cat?

Hi, A cat is a cat to me, it becomes a pussycat if we are talking about Tom the pussycat from Tom & Jerry, or any other cat from a children story. Do you have a cat as a pet? Just curious.

Cats are really cute but could be a menace if you have one as a pet. They love to make trouble hehehehe.

From the Oxford English Dictionary earliest reference to "puss" the root of puss y dates to 1530 referring to a cat. Puss is an English and German name for cat. It is also derived from childlike language.

Hi geraunt, Maybe when you call a cat and you don't know the name of the cat, you just call it puss, puss, puss, so it becomes pussycats, lol, you cat call it cat, cat, cat, now that would sound funny. Tamara

hi tamara, thank u for your response. i agree that cat would probably respond more to the "puss"y sounding name with lots of the ssssssssssss than that of cat.. cat. hehehe we even call them by their sound "language" like minggggg, meowwwww.

I don't know why they are called pussycats. Maybe it's to separate them from wild cats. Maybe it's because long haired cats look soft like a pussywillow. We call ours kittycats.

Hm, that's an interesting question. The only thing I can think of is the very old nursery rhyme, "pussycat pussycat, where have you been?" You can try googling, "origins of the expression pussycat" and see what comes up. Karen
