Well far as I know, women shaving is a Western thing, and maybe even originally an American thing. The year I lived in Germany, my friends noticed that a lot of the German women didn't shave. And when my husband's East German cousins came for a visit, the didn't. My mother-in-law even asked one of them to wear a different dress to a party so her armpits weren't showing. I admit being a bad, lazy girl and not shaving regularly. Who comes from a culture where you don't shave? Or from one where women do but you don't? Who thinks we should be talking about the space program instead?

Dawn-
I really do think it's a societal issue, and one that is meant more for astetics then anything else. Our natural hair on our legs, armpits and for women the netherworld serves a purpose. Perhaps we no longer "need" for it to serve its original purpose but I'm beginning to lean toward the side of keep it natural. I have only ever shaved the netherworld a few times and I won't be doing it again anytime soon. Having it keeps it unchafed, and as it should be. I do shave the armpits and legs, but honestly it's beginning to be more of a pain and cause issues then when I don't. I've let myself go and can't say that I turned into a "wookie". It stopped growing at a very short length and wasn't really all that noticable. When I do I have horrible dry skin, problems, and more problems. I already have two skin conditions as it is, and that is why I am leaning toward just keeping what the wonderful Goddess bestowed me with-hair. If a woman keeps herself "groomed" as in using clean water to bathe with, there shouldn't ever be a problem. It's no different then washing the hair on our head.

I couldn't agree with you more. I know that the Egyptians, so we've been told from texts were fastidious about removing all their hair due to lice, but I have to wonder if it was just the royals who did it, and the common man/woman was left to non plucking? I've not yet read enough on the Viking women yet. There is so little known about them. I know from some of the scholarly research I've done they were apparently very concerned with their hair and appearances. (I've been researching for our Renn Fest involvement as we go as Vikings because of my husband's ancestory). Eh, I'm sure that I'll continue to do the shaving simply for society lol.

well, in lots of Europe, the only women that shave are wh*res
because men came back from the wars after seeing the hookers, they thought that was the way women in Europe were and encouraged their girlfriends to do so
so for the better part of a century women in the U.S. have been shaving thinking that's the way to do it, not really understanding that only hookers do it in most of Europe

I have friends from India and we discussed to shave or not to shave. One of my friends who is married to a doctor who treats American woman said that for him it was a big turn off to see a woman's shaved body. I guess it's just a cultural thing.

LOL...most of my grandparents were immigrants. My older brothers married first generation daughters of immigrants. I saw a lot of hairy arm pits and legs. So...when I demanded to be allowed to shave my legs before a very important dance freshman year...I was told NO! Did it any way...still have the scar!

hi, i am an asian and our culture don't shave too. nowadays, being hygiene is very important. global warming has made our part of the country also very warm and sweat breaks very frequent too! we all know that sweat don't work in hand with hair. that's really uncomfortable!
now, i keep my skin clean and silky together with deodorant added to add the fragrance!

How about "Who doesn't shave, but does not have hairy legs or pits?" that is me. I would shave if I needed to, but over the years my legs and arms and pits have fewer and fewer hairs. There may be an occasional long straggler on my leg. I just yank it out. My mom always said that if I did not shave before I was twenty all the hair would fall out. I shaved anyway. It fell out anyway. I know that native Americans have less hair on their bodies than some other nationalities. I am a very tiny bit native American. Maybe that is my heritage. I would shave when/if I needed to.

I don't feel human if I go more than 5 days without a shave, and I can't wear shorts if I've gone more than 3 days. I have dark hair and fair skin, so I should shave everyday so it doesn't show, but it takes so much time and effort so I only do it once or twice a week.

I think your last sentence is a trick question, right? (ha,ha). Well, I come from the Western world where shaving a wearing deoderant are considered important. Right now I need to shave and I feel "dirty". It is always refreshing to me when my legs and pits are smooth and clean. I remember my mom saying to me when I told her I wanted to shave that "once you start, you can never stop doing it." The stubbles get so prickly that it is very irritating, like touching rose thorns. I guess other people have their traditions or reasons for not shaving but I like the smooth, clean feeling I have when they are nice and clean shaven.

Trick question, yep...
It's dang hard in the shower with glasses off to get a clean shave and then later I put them on and see everything I missed. annoying!!!

I don't like body hair at all - I mean that on legs, underarms, face, etc. I just so not like it and have always got rid of it. I developed some facial hair during menopause and fortunately it was during a time when I had money so I had elctrolysis done. I can be a bit lazy now that I am widowed about my legs as I wear pants to work but do de fuzz once a week. But when I had a husband I did it automatically every other day. I woul dhave it waxed if I could afford it. I love things like this. I would prefer to have a full body massage over a new dress any day. I have a pedi once a month as it is so cheap out here and my toes are always showing.

I will never forget when my younger cousin stayed with me and she wanted an Epilady (depilator machine) so badly. She saved up until she could afford one. And then after the first or second use it hurt so badly she got rid of it!
I have one extra weird hair on my elbow that's fairly new. Since I'm approaching menopause here, I sure hope it's not going to bring reinforcements!!!

Hair thinning where you don't want it to, extra hair where you don't want it. Some lovely things to look forward to. lol

Actually, the hairy parts do increase with menopause. One of its delights. I have one long black hair on one of my thights. I don't look at it often (not a nice sight) and when I do notice it it is usually about 3 inches long. It is so disgusting. My daughter has always been a bit hairy from puberty but she has had laser treatments. Very expensive but I encouraged her to get it done before she gets married as I know once the babies arrive and what with extra bills, then ladies do not have the time or money to spend on these 'luxuries'.

Space program....Lol. I dont shave regularly but do get annoyed when I see hair. I wear glasses so shaving in the shower especially since I love showering in hot water is not easy. I even tried Nair and it still leaves hair noticable. I have a few German friends and at first they didnt shave. Only one shaves now because she sees a difference in men reaction in America. I dont believe in women being hairy like a man but I'm not going to discriminate against it either. I just wonder why its done that way in German. All I get from them is its culture, in their German accent which i love.

Ew, I think it's gross if a woman doesn't shave. I don't want to have to stare at your nasty underarm hair. It makes a woman look more manly but more in the caveman sense. I mean, how much effort does it take, 2-4 minutes? Don't be lazy and shave or no guy will ever want you. Leg hair for men = good. Leg hair for woman= vomit. :)

Had a boyfriend once...demanded I shave my 'you know' and I told him that if he wanted a pre pubesent girl he was NOT someone I wanted around! A grown woman has hair, 'nuff said!
On the lighter side of this...I like bald guys? Should I ask a man to shave his skull just for me? lol

I've heard this many times before about women shaving being a Western thing. But then I watch the Ms. Universe Pagent and all these women are clean shaven. They are from all corners of the globe and so are the judges. Now I know its a personal preference thing, but I think that says something.

I have to shave at least once a week. I have friends from Germany and they shave (everywhere including intimate parts). Most people I know from Europe are shaving completely. I think it depends on people not nation....

I saw a fantastic photograph attached to a news feed today that was taken from space and showed a volcanic eruption in North East Asia. I've never seen anything like it before I must say!
Does that answer your question regarding what I'd rather be talking about? (The photo of the volcanic eruption is real though and I did see it today) Check this out: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/science/article6574195.ece

I don't shave my legs much these days. For one thing I always wear pants and secondly, the hairs is so fine it's barely noticeable on the parts of my legs where my trousers haven't worn it off. Third, I'm 56 and don't anticipate a love interest appearing anytime soon so ....who cares?
As for my arm pits, I do them when they are a little fuzzy so maybe twice a year?? The hair grows so slowly. Big, hairy armpits look awful to me...I wonder if those girls also have a big bush? Surely they wouldn't be having hair removal procedures on the genitals and not the arm pits?

LOL I do shave my underarms but probably not as often as I should. It's really hard for me b/c I do it in the shower and I'm blind as a bat so I'm always afraid that I will nick a major vein and bleed out. I don't shave my legs much b/c the hair is very fine and you can't hardly see it unless you're right up on me looking.
