Is intimacy more important than a good night sleep?

I am about to move to a new house and was thinking of putting two single bed in the master bedroom, one for me and one for my husband. The reason is I will be able to get more quality sleep. I talked to my husband about it and he supported the idea. My question is do you think that it is alright for a couple to share a room but sleeping in a separate bed? Do you think that intimacy is more important than quality sleep?

Hi ellie
I think you are insane putting 2 beds in the master bedroom. I think you should consider your hubby seeing a doctor about his sleep issues instead. The snoring is possibly the cause of him being unsettled and moving around in the night because he's not fully asleep. For now maybe try going to bed an hour or two before him and then you at least have that amount of sleep before the action begins! I personally think if the snoring is an issue then consider another room. x

What about those sleep number beds? You can set a different firmness for each half of the bed. Maybe he isn't sleeping soundly because the mattress isn't right for him? Then its also like having a separate bed but in the same bed.

it really depends on the couple... whatever set-up is preferable for the two of you.
i'm not married yet however i would admit that i would rather share a bed with my husband than sleep in a separate bed. intimacy is as important for me as a good night sleep. i even think that i would sleep better knowing that he's beside me and that we would wake up in each other's arms. should we need more space in the bed, i'd go for a king size bed than two separate beds.

Hey Ellie, BTW are you busy in the morning time? Like do you go for work or are you a perfect homemaker? If you are a homemaker then you would get some afternoon nap to compromise the sleep deprived nights.
However, if your hubby is OK with the idea (check if it is a half minded yes) i think you can always go for two single beds. You can always bring them together if you feel your intimacy is being interrupted. Sleep is important for good health and intimacy good for a strong relationship, so see which weighs more and go ahead. All the best :)

Hello divkris, thanks for your advice. Well, honestly speaking, I am very busy in the morning and late afternoon. I am a full time housewife. I like the idea of taking a short nap in the afternoon but that is just impossible for me to do. So, when nightfall, all I want to do is lay down in my bed and sleep.

I am sorry Ellie but I don't get the idea as to why you and your husband need to have a separate bed in the master bedroom. :) When you say so you can get quality sleep, why? Is he snooring? I can't think of any reasons.
For me, I believe it is still best that a couple shares a bed. It helps achieve the intimacy and helps strengthen the relationship. But still, if there is valid reason why you guys are planning to implement this, and the two of you talked about it, by all means go. :)

Hello chikadee21ph. Well the reason is my husband snores and he moves a lot when he sleeping. He even talked in his sleep. I am a light sleeper so any itsy bitsy noise will wake me up and I will not be able to fall asleep that easily. I know it sound strange for couple to sleep in a separate bed in a master bedroom, but for a good night sleep, I think it is worth it. For intimacy, it is a secondary matter to me now.

i think it's important to keep intimacy in your marriage in order to have a healthy marriage. maybe you could just get a really big bed instead of getting 2 smaller ones. that way you could be intimate with your husband at times, but then you'd also have enough room to just have your own space also on nights when you just want to sleep. if you sleep in separate beds, i have a feeling you will be intimate less and less. if you don't see that being an issue and you really need a separate bed and your husband supports it, then do what you want to do! only you know your situation and what will work for you. i don't think it's bad for a couple to sleep in separate beds, i just think it would make it easier for me to ignore my husband. a good nights sleep is important too though!

Hi jt1981. You are right that intimacy in marriage is healthy. The problem is my husband is those people who is not a sound sleeper. He snores and also he moves a l'ot during sleeping. These 'disturbances' make me wake up many times at night and it deprive me from a good night sleep. Right now we are sharing a king size bed and that too didn't help. However, I am still in the process of deciding which best fit our sleeping pattern.

Sharing a bed is not the only way to be intimate, and besides, on certain nights, you can always push the beds together, or even push them far enough together that they're not touching, but that you can reach out and touch eachother sometimes. They don't have to be on opposite sides of the room. The most important thing yoou can do is to take care of your own health.

Hi Ellie!
My opinion differs from yours. I would like to share one bed with my partner, may be a bigger one with ample space for each one of us. I think the feeling that someone is sleeping besides you gives you a kind of security and it makes you feel that you are bonded to someone. You may not be sleeping hugging each other all the time but occasional holding of hands or hugging when you are in your sleep makes you feel better. However, if two partners start sleeping on separate beds, even if within same room, the chances of hugging and sharing togetherness will get diminished. It is entirely my own opinion if you are comfortable sleeping with your partner, on separate bed, you may go ahead.
Warm Hugs!
Nonetheless a very interesting and unique post.

Nothing is more important than a good night's sleep, ellie, but you perhaps might want to compromise by starting out in the same bed and later moving to a separate one. Cuddling is very important, so be careful not to neglect that. My husband was a snorer and I never got a good night's sleep until I kicked him out of our bed!

I think its ok for a couple to share a room with two separate beds.People have different sleeping habits.I dont think there is much imbalance between intimacy and quality sleep. In fact,I think intimacy helps you sleep better sometimes.lol

I know many couples who sleep in separate beds, and are still quite intimate and have a very healthy relationship. If you sleep better in separate beds, then that is what you need to do, intimacy will come as it should and as the two of you want it to. My grandparents are a good example, they were one of the most loving couples I knew, but they slept in separate beds for as long as I can remember. I think that they just found their own special time to be intimate.

Oh,my friend .I suggest you should try your best to get used of your situation .I knew that because I also had o roomate just like yours in my middle school,it`s terrible.Althought its need a very long time ,but its the first stage of a healthy marriage, and I think he will be queit if your husband fill tired, and you can find help from a doctor about his snore. So try sleep in one bed and room.It is no good to escape.
I am very glad if my words could help you.

It's a personal choice what you want. But personally, we share our bed and get a sound sleep too. we are healthy and we get quality sleep.
Well, if you want to sleep separately then better talk to your husband and if he agrees you can sleep alone. Health is wealth.

I believe you can have both and still sleep in the same bed. Marriage to remain healthy needs intimacy. Just beacuse you sleep in the same bed does not mean you will not get any sleep. I have been married for 10 years and it balances out jsut fine :)

I think it is quite alright to sleep in separate beds so you both can get a good night of sleep. You could always move the beds close together too if you wanted to. My mom and step-dad have two separate sections of bed so they can both adjust it to their own comfort because my mom had back surgery.

I like the cuddling sleep. I don´t have it now (I´m a widow) but I still miss it. I have now a big bed all to myself but my sleep has worse quality than it had when mu hubby was alive. Even when we fought for "our half" of the bed

I think that there is a time when its important to have intimacy with your husband but its also important to get a good night sleep.. I do not see a problem with the two of you having your own bed, you too have already agreed upon it.. So it really does not matter what anyone else thinks.. That is something between the two of you... And that is great that you too could compromise right off the bat with this issue.. That is Awesome!!

I'd choose intimacy rather than sleeping in separate beds. It's a good practice also for you to practice your married life. You can also get quality sleep even if you're sleeping in one bed. I just need you to pick a great bed like the ones from JCPenny. A bed that won't disturb you even if you're man is moving aside your bed. I hope this helps.
