June 27 and 28 are free fishing in NY State. No fishing license required for those two days only. That will help some people put food in their freezer. Many people are telling me that their food stamps have had the levels raised so they can buy more food. Some farmers are letting people pick after their farm equipment gets done because some food is still left behind in the field. One of our banks is donating 25 dollars to the Salvation Army for each new account. One of our area churches is giving clothes away for free. WIC and Elder food cards may get added amounts so they can get buy at our Farmer's Markets. So what are some of the things you've noticed being done in your area?

Interesting, I hadn't heard that. So I'll have to look into it. We need some white paint for the outside of our house, wonder if it is just indoor or outdoor. Thanks, will check into it. Appreciate your assistance.

I double checked to make sure, so how are things going in Canada? Canadians are saving New Yorkers from being as bad off as the rest of America. It's on the news quite often how much our economy is thanks to the North.

I just saw that on their website. Thanks for posting it - up until now I didn't know they were doing that. I actually just ordered a quart, so I will see if I receive it. That is great that Glidden is doing what they can to help out. I have a small bathroom that needs to be painted so I hope I receive the quart of paint. You actually get to pick out the color as well which is terrific. Thanks again for the information.

How interesting. What a caring and sharing community. If there is anything go on here, I either didn't listen well to the news or just simply don't know about it. There are shelters to keep the homeless out of the heat and shelters to simply help people would couldn't afford to keep their a/c on during this time of intense heat. There are food pantries too but don't know where they are located.

Yeah, I forgot about Habitat for Humanity until someone mentioned it in their community. There actually is a lot out there if a person can get to it or if they can get to the person. Like we have 2 free dinners in Plattsburgh per week, but unless you can walk there or get a ride, kind of hard.

We had free fishing day but other then that I dont know. It sounds like your state is doing a lot to help out, both the government and the people. That is so great, if only we were all so giving. We are having lots of food drives, but other then that I have not noticed a lot of difference.

How is Utah doing? We had a free fishing day, but it became a free fishing weekend. If you pick Saturday, the Jews and 7th Day Adventists can't go. If you pick Sunday, many Christian groups (but not all) object. So they turned it into a weekend. If you pick a weekday, most people who work can't go. Works out well for me. I have to work one day and I can go fishing another. I will be taking my brother. Trying to find non-poluted water is the challenge. We have lots of food drives too. Thanks for responding and take care.

I do know the food stamp amounts have been raised because of the high amount of unemployment in our area. But I noticed that the food drive that the post office does each year, did not produce as much as last year. People are holding onto what they have and not so eager to give. The churches are having special days where you can go and look through piles of clothes that they have been given for anyone that needs it. But you go into a salvation army store or a Goodwill store now adays and you might as well go to Wal Mart, they have jacked the prices up so much it is unreal. I will not pay a hundred dollars for something at a goodwill store that I can buy new in a regular store. I seen couches that they are asking $200. for that really should have been put out for the trash. And it is still setting there if you go back 2 weeks later, wonder why. Our grocery stores have a big barrel at the front of each store, to drop things that you buy extra to go to the food pantry.

Yes last year I think we had 2 or 3 sacks of groceries for the woman who delivers the mail to take this year we missed it. Things have gone up so much you can't afford to give as you did.

Not just things going up, my income has been going down, too. Both at the same time is a double whammy!

Price Chopper and Hannaford's have boxes to put food in also where I live, but not as many people donating. Our Salvation Army and Religious stores have kept prices down as much as possible. My brother needed 4 or 5 pairs of jeans for work and only had a $20. He ended up with lots of pants at 5 bucks a pair for his work. I usually put an entire bag of food in the mailbox for the post office drive, but only a box of rice this time. All I could afford.

We are still wrapped up in post Katrina stuff and getting things back to "normal." It's hard to say what is specifically due to the economy because New Orleans has been in a recession state for years.

Yes it is. My brother was equally amazed when he evacuated Florida on time and came back. His trailer was in the middle and the only one left standing. Minor wind, couple of windows to replace and the roof was loose and would have peeled off on one end if it had kept going, but it's wild how some places and people are spared. Thanks and take care.

The part that was not flooded, in particular the uptown areas between St. Charles avenue and the river had good enough infrastructure to come back right away. The only problem was that you had to drive into the next parish even to buy groceries and stores had limited business hours and not much inventory. Most businesses had trouble getting employees initially so you can imagine what service and wait times were like. I am fortunate to live in what was dubbed "the sliver by the river" where there was only wind damage. I am also walking distance to an area where restaurants and other business were able to get back up and running quickly. I missed being underwater by just over half a mile. (Amazing isn't it?)

Georgia has free fishing days with no license required, however they do that two times a year and have been during it for years now. They have increased the food stamp amount and I believe that has been increased through out the US. I have noticed that several churches are giving away free dinners on certain night and anyone is welcome. I haven't seen any signs for farmers giving away free food - which would be nice as in my area there have been so many plant closures - the unemployment rate is extremely high. WIC has a new program that is suppose to include fruit and vegetables. I used to live in Washington State and I can tell you that that state really takes care of there under priviledged or unemployed people.

Two times a year for free fishing would be really, really nice. Our Salvation Army and one church (rotates amoung churches) each have one night a week. I think it's still Wednesday and Saturdays for dinners. I helped with one before. We fed only 60 years ago. Bet it's double that now. Nice to know that Washington State is sooo helpful.

I would try googling "new york state free fishing days" usually the government where the fishing licenses are issued have free fishing days each year. They usually also have free fishing clinics where no licenses are required. Even though my husband is a great fisherman, this year we couldn't afford a license so he has been going to the free clinics just to be able to fish for free. They really don't care if you already know how to fish because they figure you will help out the more inexperienced ones. Hope this helps.

Even last year, elderly people got an extra voucher to be used at the local farmer's market. Helped them, helped the farmers. County jail has a garden annually. What they do not use goes to the food bank and to the senior center. I know my clients with Vision Cards (food stamps) have had their amounts raised. We have Habitat for Humanity doing a blitz build. In our church we have an outreach group that takes old furniture and finds places that need furniture. They also sponsor a food pantry and some times some necessity showers are held for things like bedding and beds and laundry soap and shampoo. Things that foodstamps will not buy. Our "dump" and recycling center has a reuse section where good used things can be left and others pick it up for free.

I wish our dump had a reuse. Seems like such a waste not to. We have a recycling part for plastics, newspapers, etc., but it just doesn't seem like enough. Yes, the vouchers or any other method does help both the Farmers and the group or group that needs the food. I did a Farmers' Market one year, and if it hadn't been for those vouchers, some farmers wouldn't have made it. They really liked ours, just went to a bank and cashed them just like a check. It makes you feel good when you see people getting fresh produce that wouldn't normally be able to afford it. We can't get the volunteers for a blizt build. But they are close to me and I'm running out of work, so who knows? I may help with one. Usually they're so far away, it would cost a fortune in gas. I forgot about the donations for babies to Birthright. They usually ask local churches, but they have also had a booth and cans at the fair.

Hello! Just a quick response here, as I couldn't pass up this topic. Those are wonderful things that you've mentioned, that are being done. In our area ... Oshawa Ontario, we recently received the best sample package I've ever got in our mailbox. A company gave away a whole box of Hamburger Helper, as well as a pkg. of Old El Paso taco mix. The giveaway also included an amazing coupon booklet, and most of the products featured are ones we use. Each coupon is worth anywhere from $1.00 - $3.00 off, and I believe there are around 20 coupons in all. I hope you and your hubby are doing well. Take care.

That is wonderful. I've heard of Ottawa, Ontario, but not Oshawa. That food could be wonderful for any family right now. Just add whatever and you have a meal. Some people add hamburger, some turkey burger and some vegetarian stuff. At any rate, that is a help. Thank you very much for telling about a company in your area that is really helping out. It makes my day. Take care.
