The ESL (English as Second Language) Program is a considerable success in the Philippines. However i still think there's should be a controlled regulations in that. It's initially made not only to attract tourists and students to learn English in the country but to generate income and investments here as well. unfortunately, what often happens is that foreign nationals enroll in language centers in the Philippines that are run or owned by foreigners of the same nationality. With that, these foreign businessmen generate more profit from it than the Filipino-owned centers.
On the other hand, maybe this program ought to be a wake-up call for schools to raise the standards of English proficiency of Filipinos to address the deteriorating (English) language competencies of our students.

Hi sanelaze. I go with you in saying that English proficiency here in Phil should also be given concentration for Filipinos to be well-versed on it. Regarding managing such academies, it is possible for filipinos to establish their own academy and manage it if they have the capital such as money, building, and the most and foremost, their contact abroad. Blessings!

but how are we to do that if our government can't even raise the teachers' salary? there are more children attending public schools, the government needs to focus on them... but with the current economic crisis, the teachers will only be further tempted to join private companies/schools since they provide better compensation package.

i think its here in Philippines. our forced national language is Tagalog (but then we have a lot of tribal and regional languages). so meaning to say English language is a learned language. therefore when it its learned, we are taught how construct proper English sentences etc.. (subject verb agreement)so it is safe to presumed that those people who masters English language here in our country practices it correctly and they can surely teach others on how to use correct English .

So do you mean then that filipinos are proficient in teaching the english language that makes other foreign nationals come here to learn it? I still believe in that. I can say that we are more capable in speaking and writing in English other than teaching it...Blessings!^^

I noticed that too. There are many Korean English proficiency schools around that attracts many Koreans to enroll here in the Philippines. Although right now our average proficiency in English is deteriorating in our educational system. It is ironic that we can make Koreans English proficient but not our fellow countrymen.

That's the saddest thing that is happening here in our country. Last October, I had a chance to go back to school for further education, and I noticed that the English proficiency of most of my classmates who finished their four-year course in the university had a lot of grammar mistakes. Other than the one I posted, what do you think should be done here friend? Thank you and blessings!^^

I guess looking at the situation right now, you should take a look at their financial situation. Trying your luck working as a public school teacher as compared to a foreign language teacher in a local school teaching foreigners. You can see the difference that of course you would choose it the best option.

I believe that if one wants to learn a new language, then the most sensible thing to do is to go to the country where the language originated from. Now I know that English did not originate from the Phillipines neither is English the first language there, so I find it very odd that people are going to Phillipines to learn English!
I think they maybe other factors involved. Like the cost of studying english in Phillipines is much cheaper than studying in England so I think most of them are only using the channel created in the phillipines in order for them to legally stay in the Phillipines as it doesn't make sense to me to go to Phillipines to learn English. It's like saying I'm going to Brazil to learn German where German is not even spoken there!!

You might have a point there; however, there are many reasons why they choose to study in the Philippines. One is that 97% of the teachers are patient to teach even super-duper beginners. That makes them at least prepare practice their speaking skill before they go to English native speaking countries. Blessings!^^

I have noticed that there are really lots of Koreans in the Philippines. It's nice to know that they find our country as 'the best' one to learn English. I personally think that a lot, probably up to fifty percent, of the population can understand and speak English. Sadly, however, not all of those people can speak quality English, so in my opinion, our country is not 'the best country' for non-English speakers to learn English, but 'the cheapest'.

Hello there. I go with you in saying that our country is the cheapest when it comes to learning the English language, and it is really sad that not all Filipinos can really speak in English as fluently as what other foreign nationals perceive our country to be. Blessings!^^

I observed that too many Koreans are studying here because it is much cheaper to study here than any other countries like US and UK. I also agree that some Filipinos including me are not that fluent to speak English. It is a sad reality I hope in the future the Korean would not ahead of us in English education. English education in public schools is not that good because some English teachers are not fluent in English and had a difficulty in speaking the language.

Many Koreans (or even other Asians, excluding Indians) come to the Philippines to study and learn English because of the following:
(1) It is located in Asia i.e., a sense of regionalism (so to speak)
(2) It is a lot cheaper studying in the Philippines for the purpose
(3) A majority of the Filipinos are "conversant" in English
(4) They find the tropical climate (with only two defined seasons i.e., summer and monsoon) better than what they have back home
(5) Prices of commodities and establishments are relatively cheaper
(6) Philippines is "Americanized" i.e., a "training ground" for understanding American culture in an Asian country

Yes, I believe that the Philippines had been known as the country who can eligibly teach English language. And I'm proud of that. Only, I do hope that these people who can speak fluently won't forget their native tongue.

that is true! based on the number of foreigners specially koreans and malaysians in out country today, it is true that lots of people are coming to philippines to learn english language. its a good thing that in our country english is being practiced as a second language by everyone. even the common people like street vendors understand and can speak in english compare to other countries.

Hello geniustiger. Just like you, it makes me feel proud as a Filipino as well. With the kind of climate our country has plus the excellent ability in teaching English that our citizens have, that makes me feel grateful for being a filipino. God bless!^^

I taught Koreans for more than two years... the first year was in Korea as a missionary English teacher and then i went to Cavite where we had a new set of students every two months. for rich Koreans, they would choose to study with native speakers...yes there is still discrimination so to speak, most of those who come here are let's say they belong to middle class families... though there are a few rich kids too... if you will try to compare getting a native English speaking tutor with a Filipino English teacher... the salary native speakers get amounts to 12-20 dollars per hour, while Filipino teachers are satisfied with 3 dollars some do get 300 pesos an hour but most are paid 100 pesos an hour, some Koreans are even bargaining for 90 pesos and still many go for it because it's so hard to find a job here in our country. so there, it's a lot cheaper here plus Filipino teachers are very accommodating .... and very patient in teaching.

Hi there irislee. That is the sad part of teaching English to foreigners. On the other hand, this can be avoided if only all those who teach these foreigners would not allow themselves being paid at a very low price. If we want to be paid just like the native speakers, we should not allow then to be paid below P250/hours at least. Others may not agree with me because they say that they badly need money or they won't be able to get students; however, if we have the ability and we stick to our principle, then these foreigners who would want to learn english would soon realize that what they are paying is worth paying. Cheers!^^

I agree to the views of most people here that it is very unfortunate that most people go here to study english and learn Filipino as well for FREE because the cost of living is very cheap while our educational system here is fast deteriorating due to lack of government support to teachers teaching in the public schools.I think the government should allot more funds to our educational system to help more people become literate and proficient in english so that once they graduated from college, they will be globally competitive since they are able to communicate well with other nationals.

Hello there. I believe that Filipino teachers are already globally competitive. In fact, many of our excellent teachers are teaching in China, Korea, London, the US, etc. The sad thing is that if you ask them why they have chosen to teach abroad, the common answer you can hear is that they say it is due to lack of pay they receive from our government. Thus,i agree that our government should give support to oue educational system...God bless:)
