Yoga vs. stretching

Years ago I used to do Yoga, and I found it very good. I did it from age 12 to 34. However for religious reasons I gave it up. (That is NOT the concern of my post -- please don't respond by arguing that yoga is not religiously based.) What I am wondering is this -- is there a form of exercise I can do that is *like* yoga, but is NOT yoga? I have looked on the 'net but haven't really found any sites that inspired me. I am now very obese and Pilates (which I love the idea of) is not attainable for me. Does anyone know of a resource that could help me with basic stretches that can be done from a standing or sitting position, not requiring me to lie on the floor? When I see my cat doing his delicious stretches when he gets up from a snooze, I smile and remember how good that felt, when my body was lithe and limber :-) I would love to get fit enough to *do* Pilates. I'm afraid that if I got down on the floor now, I would not be able to get up again without assistance :-(

Hi, kiwibee - glad I saw you here. I would not do yoga either, for the same reason as you but there is a lot of things you can do to stay fit. I have learned some stretching during the years that starts my body before I get up from bed. One is from the chiropractor that helped me with my back. Then I do some stretching that Tony Little has taught on a video many years ago. You can make a search with Tony Little Target Training and there is a lot of info. Some of the stretching is just like your cat does after waking up. You can do them all in a bed - I don´t like to do them on floor either. Wish you a great day and good health..

Great comments buenavida -- thank you so much. And thanks for responding even though my post was so old! I have sometimes hesitated to reply to an old post, but now I won't. I'd actually forgotten about that question I asked, although it is still relevant. I will search for Tony Little info. (I have heard of him.) I visited your profile and I see I requested you as a friend a long time ago (still waiting). We have a few things in common. I am 64 as well and also have tenuous links with Sweden! Thanks again.

Hi, kiwibee - thanks for responding so fast. Sorry if I missed your friend request - I cannot see any request from you now, must have disappeared. I sent one for you today.. I think we have a lot in common I am not Swedish from the beginning...was born in Finland but have lived here since I was 10 years old. But I live so near Finland that I can see it from my window. New Zealand is an interesting country. I will visit you there - if I can´t now, I will wait for the paradise..

Hello I think that most of exersises in stretching are taken from yoga as a older sport(way of live). But some people make big mistakes in stretching when they do not know the essence of these exersises.I choose the Yoga but if you like more stretching you can look at this article to prevent some possible wrongs: http://healthmad.com/fitness/strtching-2/
