What do y'all think of the new Rancid Album? I got it on itunes, so it has every song in it's original and acoustic versions. I must say I have mixed feelings, but overall it's Rancid, so I like it...I guess when you've been listening to the same band from age 8 to 26, and you never get sick of them, you're just happy to have new songs. At least that's how I feel. I do have to say that while I love Matt Freeman playing bass, I don't dig his vocals very well. Tim and Lars have f-d up enough voices already. Plus, I think he kinda sounds like big mike from NOFX. Anyway, I was kinda surprised that no one had started a discussion about the new album yet, so I did!

Ohmigosh! You have killer taste in music. I don't know anyone on myLot who even knows who Rancid is let alone anyone who truly appreciates their music. I actually have NOT heard the new album. But I do know that the last one, Indestructible, which was yeah - about 5 years old now (or more - I can't remember! It seems like yesterday that it came out) - was WAY more mellow than their previous music - which bugged a lot of people out. I don't really mind it, though, because all bands evolve and grow up - and that's exactly what rancid was doing. Except for songs like "David Courtney" (love that one) and "Red Hot Moon" is pretty sweet too (love the Rob Aston bit in it!) I agree that Matt Freeman is SERIOUSLY the BEST bassist on the face of the planet. Or at least in punk. It's amazing how much of a role bass plays in Rancids' music. But his voice is a little weird, as you said. I know he sang lead vocals in some songs from 2000, but of course I can't think of them on the spot here. He also sang a lot of the NOFX cover - "Don't Call me white". I don't really think him & Big Mike sound alike at all..I think Big Mike's voice is more nasal-y than Mike Freeman's, which is kind of.. gritty/throaty. LOL. I don't know if that makes sense. I'm really ashamed that I haven't heard the new album yet. I think I've been a fan of them since I was 12, and in 7th grade (and now I'm 18..So a while, I guess). So you can buy it on iTunes now? That's awesome and I will definitely do so. In case my checking account disagrees with me, do you have any specific highlights of the album to suggest to me? Other than "Last One to Die"? And also, they're on tour right now (they're actually in my city - today - but alas, I couldn't afford to go). Are you going to see them if they come around to your part of town?

Maezee, yeah Matt's voice is definitely not as nasaly...maybe it's just one of the songs in particular I'm thinking of. The whole thing sounds more NOFX-y, and I probably wouldn't have noticed or cared if I didn't dislike NOFX! I agree that he is the best bass player (at least in punk) He's why I started playing bass, but i'm no where near him! Which Rancid songs are your favorites? Because this album is really all over the place, so it's kinda hard to pin down songs to suggest. Especially with the acoustic covers, alot of those sound really folks-y (obviously) or even more bluegrass. There are some traditional fast rancid songs, some more like indestructable, some are more like tim's solo album. I don't know if you've heard "outlaw" that tim armstrong did with the lordz, but my favorite on the album kinda sounds more like that style. I think it's called "go go baby" but I'm not sure if that's the actual title or just the line in the chorus...I've seen rancid a few times; the last time I saw them was at a dive bar in Dallas. They had a giant projection screen and played war footage through the show in the background, it was pretty intense. I don't know if I would go see them again. I'm getting anti social in my old age! (I'm 25 now, 26 in august) It just seems like each show I go to, rancid or not, gets progressively more annoying just because of the other people there. It may have something to do with the fact that I don't drink anymore, but that is a whole other discussion! Sucks you couldn't see them, but I totally understand the $$ thing, really it sucks that a rancid show would be unaffordable. But I guess the days of $5 or $10 punk shows that I remember are over!
