Do you ever buy "gifts" for yourself? What are some of the gifts and reasons?

Every now and then, I do buy myself a treat or a gift, usually something small and inexpensive, to cheer myself up when I am down. One time, it was .79 Tweety Bird that stuck to the car window. And I love to buy journals at the dollar store. They are so pretty. Or I'll buy a new nail polish maybe. The most expensive "gift" I ever bought myself was shortly after I left my husband. I bought a birthstone ring at the jewelry store, sort of as a way to remind myself that I was still worth something lol.
Do you ever buy gifts for yourself? What are your reasons, and what are some of the things you have bought yourself?

Giving your spouse a gift is good, but so is buying yourself a nice little present, just for you, sometimes :) Have a happy weekend!

Sometimes I do but it's really very seldom, but i do love to give gifts specially to my son. Whenever i buy a gift for myself it would be books or a dress.

Giving gifts is as nice or even better than receiving them, but yes, we all need to "gift" ourselves sometimes, too, even if it is with something small and inexpensive. I appreciate you responding to the discussion. The picture of your little boy is beautiful!

I reward myself for doing well in school. I reward myself with nice but not expensive gifts. I also buy a few gifts for myself for my birthday and christmas since most of the time I get nothing from other people.

Doing well in school is so important, and I am glad you reward yourself for that. And there is nothing wrong with buying ourselves something for holidays and birthdays, especially so if no one else does. It's helps us remember that we are important, that we count.

I buy myself little things like journals or hair ties as a treat. Usuually its so i dont feel like all i ever do is pay for food gas and student loans. I also set money aside so i can go on trips or do something like buy my nintendo wii.
I've never bought myself expensive jewelry (i rarely wear it). I hate clothes shopping so i tend to put it off until things look so bad because they are worn out or stained and then its a necessity not a treat (id hate to get an indecent exposure ticket or aressted!)

LOL, NO we don't want you getting a ticket. One of my grandsons wore his fav. jeans threadbare, and they developed a hole in the fanny by the pocket, so he'd wear these crazy boxers to make it look like a patch, but his mom finally made him throw them away. Journals and hair ties are things I like to get, too. They are nice, but not expensive :)

Aww, that is very sweet of you. It is a joy, though, to buy for others.

I think that is a good reason to give yourself a gift, for cheering up the soul. It really doesn't take much to make us smile, and I believe it is healthy for us to be kind and good to ourselves, the way we are to others. :)

I buy myself small gifts-clothes, a new pair of shoes, makeup--whatever I feel I want-I do this because I work hard.....two jobs...I deserve a little something from time to time.

You DO deserve something pleasurable just for yourself when you work that hard. I think we get discouraged if every cent has to go only on practical things. Most of mine does, but a little gift now and then is a real lift to the spirits.

Great Karen! That's the way it should be. The first step to happy living starts with loving ourselves and I truly believe in pampering ourselves as much as we can and this is not being selfish. I pamper myself, sometimes with a nice session on spa and sometimes by buying knick knacks and seldom with expensive gadgets. It feels so much better especially if I am going through lows.

Oh, I miss going to the spa for a massage or manicure and pedicure. I gave it up in the effort to save money, but I do so miss it. Like you, the things I buy are seldom expensive, but they give a nice lift to the spirits :)

Karen, your idea appears to me a bright and interesting idea to cheer oneself up by buying some gifts. I also feel that when we are down and out, we can just go to the market nd help us buy some small things, which make us happy. I love pens, so when I feel like buying something for me, I'll buy a beautiful and trendy pen for myself. Else, buying new shirts give a kind of satsifaction to me.
Good Post!

Hi D...I think my love of pens came of my love for writing in journals. I have them in various styles and colors. They are an inexpensive "treat." :)

Hi Dpk...I love pens, too, and my dollar store journals. I'm glad you treat yourself to the pens and shirts. They aren't so very much money, but they do give one a lift if we're feeling a bit down and out. :)

Sometimes I will buy myself a book or a CD that is of interest only to me. But I don't need much and there is usually family needs that come before me.

Yes, most of us do put the practical things and family needs before us, but it is still good for the esteem and for mental health to treat ourselves now and then. I'm glad you do that with a book or Cd from time to time :D

Yes I like to 'gift' myself when I do have enough money to buy one. It is usually a T-Shirt or denims. The latest gift I bought myself was a Nokia Xpressmusic cellphone.
The most expensive of my gifts was a golden chain with a cross on it. Many of my friends appreciated it that time.

Yay! I'm glad you got the cell phone. Right now, the next bigger thing on my own wish is a digital camera. And new jeans and a T are also fun things to buy and wear. I love getting things like that at Old Navy, as their prices are so reasonable and the things are still good quality. Enjoy the new phone and the beautiful necklace. :D

I seldom buy new clothes any more because of the economy :( I miss that! Doesn't it make you just feel good to wear a new outfit? I used to love to shop the sales at Fashion Bug, like their two-for-one sales. Enjoy those new pants :D

New books are always a treat. Most of my family gets new books quite often, and then we trade them back and forth. That way we always have new reading material and we've shared the cost. And accessories are fun, too! Thank you for responding.

I love to buy books too, and you're right, they make wonderful rewards for a job well done. And nothing is better than picking up a new book (I even love the way they smell) and getting lost in a great story to forget one's troubles. Thank you for responding :D

I guess you could say I treat myself every month. See I don't smoke or drink so I figure with the money I save on that I spend it on myself on earrings. I buy about 5 or 6 pairs. I only buy the cheap 2.00 pairs because I lose them really easy. And with long hair they tend to wear the silver-tone off really easy. But if it is a good pair of ear rings I do stuff to them to make sure they last longer.

You're right! Not smoking would save a ton of money, and I don't drink, so it's good to spend the extra on something you love, something that cheers you up. I love earrings, too, and have many pair. Most of them are the inexpensive sort, but a few are what I call the real deal :) Do you coat them ever with a dab of clear nail polish to keep the silvery part from wearing off? That works pretty well for me.

yes, and i really like it. I'm not a spender, unless necessary and when suddenly an urge coming for me to buy something and it kind expensive, I will tell myself, its a gift for my ownself and I deserve it, so I will not feel guilty about the purchasing that item.

I no longer feel guilty for such things either, even though I am careful with my money, but yes, every now and then we DO deserve to get ourselves something in the way of a gift or reward. So keep on enjoying that :)
