Thai elephants painted to look like pandas after the black and white bears steal their fans! The elephant is Thailand's national symbol, but the country has gone panda-crazy since the birth of a female panda cub. Sick of all the fuss, keepers decided to take drastic-action, painting five of their neglected giants in water color paint, then parading them before schoolchildren!!
I find this absolutely inane. I can understand the craze though being a panda spanker but this is one instance too far!
What do you think?

I think the keepers are suffering from jealousy more than the elephants. They chose to work with elephants, so they shouldn't be acting like that to begin with.
Painting elephants to look like pandas just degrades the animals themselves. They are elephants, and should be kept to look like elephants.
Personally, I think elephants are marvelous creatures. They are so caring of their family groups and the whole herd is involved with raising the babies. Us humans could learn a lot from them in that regard.
Give me an elephant over a panda for a pet any day. Ok, so I don't have the space, but it would certainly be well looked after and would become a great mode of transport and source of fertilizer for the gardens as well as a great companion. just don't know if an elephant would cope with our troop of monkeys though (those being our kids).

Newzealtrailian, elephants are well known to have a good sense of humour and to love dressing up. I don't doubt that they didn't know that they were supposed to look like pandas (or even what a panda was, though, coming from a zoo, they might have seen one).
Elephants can and do smile (though they hide it beneath their trunk) and they have an incredibly wicked sense of humour.

Hey guys thanks for dropping in.
I think both are sweet and nice animals and thanks owlwings for the detailed research on the elephant psyche. That was quite insightful!
I think elephants are good in their skins and so are the pandas and so is any other being. I rather not dress up like someone who has immense credibility and fame. I better be myself, the way I am. Weird, quirky and whatever you call me.

Hey Mimpi! I know! I read the article! How could they? Those
poor elephants are so jealous that they had to dress up like
pandas? I don't know what to say! The pandas are ltao! And so
is everyone else! The elephants are making complete azzs out
of themselves! How embarrassing for them! Go pandas! Now do
you think the elephants are going to want to be spanked too?
We just can't allow that now! They are just toooo big and tooooo
heavy! Pandas spanking only! Elephants go back to acting like
elephants and stop pretending to be Pandas!

Hmmmmmmmmmm, I'm of course quite excited at this act being a panda spanker and all, but it does seem like an odd thing to do on every other level! Then again, it's certainly put their beloved elephant's back on the map! I would've thought that something in rainbow stripes may have been a little more fashionable these days anyways? They do look pretty interesting though I must admit and there's no way they'll go unnoticed.

This is interesting and the pandaphants look great! But I was bit taken aback by the insensitivity of the zoo authority. The poor animals are made to go through a real make over and that is painful!

I think better call those three as ELEPHANDA and not PANDAPHANTS. The telescopic merge of words for Elephant and Panda. Keepers hunch really genuine because nobody has yet comes out with this notion(general understanding) before. Sort of blueprint or conception, I guess. Very good idea and I like it very much. Thanks mimpi1911 for your pictorial sharing with us on here, a rare in a few news material.

ELEPHANDA is a better name definitely. It somewhere, restores the identity of the elephants. lol..
I think its innovating and first of its kind, if only the poor animals are not over stressed! If they ensure this, I would be apart of this very much.

I know, you're a superb artist, mimpi1911. Do you like mural drawing? I learned something good from India members, to balance up my right and left brain functions, I have to practice more on drawing in whatever type of it; sketching, painting, etc.; so know I am learning about how to get it started by heart or play by ear. I think better start with sketching your avatar...hahahahaha! am I right, mimpi1911?.

Ohh really? I can understand why the keepers tried that kind of stunt because they just do care about the animals that they are taking care of. They also want their wards to be noticed and those elephants being the national animal of the country and all. Sure it might have made the people and the children notice the amusing painted elephants but still, its kinda unfair to the elephants trying to make them look like another animal that they really are not.
Anyway, that's just my opinion on the matter.

Designer Panda painted elephants and paraded before school children ?
Won't the children start thinking that there's a new species of elephant around, Pandphant ?
I can understand the joy of having a panda cub born for the first time in the country, but this...I understand that there is a lot more to what they have done. A Birth certificate , a snow house being built for the Panda at 20 million baht and even panda poo paper.
Apparently there was a lot of effort in the process to get the baby panda born.Special dieets, rituals and even a mock wedding.
Pandamonium, more to come ? Time will tell..

I can understand their celebration and it feels so good that they are rejoicing the new born. However, its kinda bizarre how they are treating the elephants just in an endeavor to pull more crowds and satisfy the stupid whims. Can you beat the agony that the poor animals have to go every day?

Hi Mimpi!
Initially, when I saw your discussion, I could not understand the same (though your post was quite clear, but you know I'm a tubelight). Incidentally, I saw the pictures and read the news item about elephants being painted and paraded in front of school children. I also found the idea disgusting. How can such a huge animal like elephants be painted and can be paraded on thier rear two legs. The idea perhaphs was to remind children that they should give importance to elephants too, while loving Pandas. I feel even if they would have shown elephants in their normal self, to children, the purpose would have been served.

Hi Mimpi!
Good Morning!
You are totally right kids might get confused seeing a painted elephant, their brain is not so developed so as to understand the intricacies of converting an elephant into Panda.

Wow, grrrrl, I might need a few decades to think on that one. Can I get back to you? Reminds me a bit of the fuss over the Bonsai Kittens they had a while back, only that was just photo manipulation...not real kittens. These are real elephants, errr, I mean fake pandas. Hmmmm. Just so they don't try to feed them bamboo leaves?

This is an excellent way to draw the traffic and also the elephants are such artistic. I think little bit of vision can take us along way. Thanks for the links. This is anew thing to me and my thoughts concur with yours.
Thanks.

OK, I have thought about it and looked at the pictures and decided it is not only inane, but inexcusable to ridicule the elephants in this manner. Instead of painting the elephants, if they wish to draw positive attention to the elephants and made some money too, they should give the elephants paint sets and canvas and let them use their trunks to create original works of art to be sold to the public. They have done this in many zoos here in the US and around the world and some of the elephant painters were selling their works for thousands of US dollars not because people felt sorry for the elephants but because some of the elephants were excellent artists.
To read more about the elephants who paint instead of being painted, here is a page that has links to some of the many galleries which show the elephant paintings online:

Hi Mimpi,
So finally the Milton invented word 'pandemonium' got justified in your words 'Will this stop the PANDAmonium'?
This is really crazy and there is no point as to why elephants be coloured after Panda? I do not thing an elephant would ever be a Panda. Let the difference prevail.

I am wondering if your panda would submit to having his coat covered with grey, wrinkly mud and a hosepipe attached to his nose to make him look like an elephant. Somehow I doubt that, placid as they seem to be, pandas would have that depth of humour.

poor elephants!I understand the excitement that a baby panda is born in Thailand, but it doesn't have to be a reason to forget the elephants.both animals need the help and care of humans.no need to neglect one or the other.

Elephants are extremely intelligent animals (on balance, probably far more intelligent than most schoolchildren). This little photo of the parade suggests that the elephants entered into the spirit of the occasion - while, at the same time raising their [mental] eyebrows at the silly ideas that humans come up with.
I don't imagine that any of the elephants knew or cared what a panda was but, all the same, enjoyed being decked out in black and white (because elephants enjoy being the centre of attention). Intelligent animals such as elephants and others who have become accustomed to humans are often quite happy to play the fool because they know that the foolishness merely rebounds onto us silly humans!

That's quite satisfying to know. I think they are playing their parts quite well. We, humans, sometimes go over board with stupidity. The instance here could very well be one where instead of having visions for drawing traffic for both the show stoppers they are merging their identities. This in away is weird.
Thanks for lovely interpretation of animals' psyche.

Here I am trying to step into the world of panda spanking and this happens! If they keep that up I won't even know if I'm spanking the panda.
It is a little much..I guess the elephants got more attention though..and a few swats here and there. It is a little drastic...lol

The elephantpandas look quite dressed up in their new black and white outfits, and parading them is fine. Since they've been painted in water colors, I just hope that it does not "rain on their parade." It would cause the colors to "run" and no one wants to be around running elephants.

I saw a picture of this on a a blog a few minutes ago. I don't know what to think about it. Should we call them Pandaphants? Should I be enraged that they painted them(I hope it wasn't led based paint) without asking the elephants how they really felt about the color scheme? I laughed because I thought it was an edited photo. But it's real, so I'm semi-speechless.
by the way, what pray tell is panda spanking anyway? Sounds a little bit kinky, and a whole lot of weird. Does it in any way help to increase the panda population? Do they enjoy it? Is there an internet meme that involves panda's getting spanked? If so, would it be considered as NSFW?

Hi cb
I find this inane and just weird to transform them to pandas just to cater to the craze! Just read the above response and that's so innovative.
