Do you have any good ideas as to what to do with someone's old wedding dress?

I have my daughters very expensive wedding dress from her first marriage. She doesn't want it. It was almost $700.00 over 15 years ago so you know there is alot of material, beads and sequins on it. I am going to take all the beads off and the sequins...but what would you do with all the material? It's beautiful white satin. Not practical for pillows...not practical for making a blanket out of it but it's much too beautiful to just throw away. Any ideas are welcome.

sell it on e-bay! You may get most of your money back on it. Or take it to a local consignment shop. I am betting you'll get more on e-bay but at least you'll be getting some of your money back on it and who couldn't use it these days?

Somebody could be looking for vintage clothing I know a lot of people who look on ebay, kijiji, and craigslist for vintage gowns to do exactly what people have said in their comments prom dresses, christening outfits, and brides who want something different.

Many years ago I sold mine to a resell it kind of shop. Didn't get much for it but it was off my hands. Did save it for a long time but our kids didn't have any interest in wearing it. Plus, it was too small. Think our oldest daughter also sold her wedding dress but can't remember where. You might try selling it on e-Bay and see what happens. I have one here, from our youngest daughter, which is just sitting in the closet catching dust.

Where I live, it's quite common to use wedding dresses to make christening/baptism gowns for babies. I had my first wedding gown boxed up - you know mounted on one of those forms and sealed in a "memory box" and all? But years after the divorce, I just didn't want to keep it any more. I asked both of my daughters if they'd like me to keep it, since some girls do like to go the vintage dress route when they get married, but they said they didn't think so. What I ended up doing was donating the dress to their high school's drama department. That way, it can be used for many years and potentially saves the school a little bit on their costume budget.

maybe you can remake the fabric into some little girl dress up clothes, I know I used satin scraps to make sachets, even a little lace on them too, pretty and smelled good - but the resale shop might be the best idea

if its not too "stylish" it should be good, even with a few adaptations,

Check this link out, maybe you'll find more ideas! http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/sewing/msg1208500231775.html Don't worry, IT'S NOT A REFERRAL LINK!

I can't really comment on that, I come from a family of collectors, whether it be valuable or just not wanting to be thrown away, lol. My fiance comes from that kind of family too, so lol.

If you'd rather not try selling it, and work with dolls at all, you could make bridal outfits for Barbie or bigger dolls. Those things would sell very well. Or you could make Christening gowns of it, too. Endless possibilities :) Karen

How about some Cushion Covers and put the Cushions on your Bed, Tablecloth, or even a Bed throw over just like half a one to go over your Cover

I would check with consignment shops and see if they re sell wedding dresses. Since your daughter doesn't want it. The dress may be help out a new bride who doesn't have the money for a new dress. if the bones are okay, a seamstress could bring it back to life.

If it's still in good shape why don't you sell it? Do you have a re-sale shop close to you? Some people go to these shops especially for items like this as the economy is so down right now. Or they're just out of work. I can't remember if you're a crafter or not? There might be some idea's off into that area.

Well my daughter recently told me she told one of her friends she could make curtains out of her wedding dress, seems like a good idea to me. Except her friend will save her wedding dress for another ceremony she and her soon to be husband are planning after their wedding.

maybe it is a cultural thing (am asian) but i know some europeans who just put the wedding dress in a box and keep it for the next generation to see. not really for show but keep it somewhere so if a lucky descendant chances upon seeing it he'd feel the special feeling that that union brought about.

oh, sorry to hear about the divorce. yeah, maybe a pillow case or a curtain might be a good idea. what about a tabletop to a table seldom used table because of the beads? or why not have it sold?

What about sachets. You could dye the fabric different colors and make a bunch of different sachets. Make one side out of the satin fabric and the other side use toulle or something with tiny little holes and file with popurri (not sure how to spell that). If you aren't up to the task, I would put the material up on ebay or even etsy as they selling crafting supplies including material on there as well.

If you are good at sewing I would sew the sachets and sell them on etsy - that way you would probably get more for your money. I am sure a wedding dress with all the gathering and stuff would make a ton of sachets and even if you sold them for cheap you would make a ton of money. Just a thought. I am not a big fan of sachets myself, however I have a huge walk in closet which doesn't have a A/C vent - the closet is so hot and ends of smelling a bit musty in the summer. I sewed up some sachets just to make sure our clothes stay fresh smelling. If I didn't sew, I would have definitely purchased some.

My husband's mother passed away right after we were married. They still had her wedding dress, and when we had our second child, his then stepmother of course didn't want her husband's deceased wife's dress lying around. She had a dedication/baptism gown made for my baby and had a boy outfit made from it for my nephew. Don't know if you are expecting any grandchildren or know of anyone who may be expecting children. I know it might be strange to use material from a dress from a previous marriage, but that is one thought.

I was listening to John Tesh the other night and if you got to his website he has the addresses of website that specialize in selling used wedding dresses. You should be able to get a few bucks for it in the current economy.

hmmmm.... that's a good question. What about making a quilt? Or (could be a jinx-idea) you know those photo albums that people ALWAYS make for weddings? The ones that you take the album, add a touch of padding, cover with a lacy-covered fabric with lace all around the edges then detailed with beads and such? How about using the wedding dress as the fabric cover of those kind of albums and then you have a whole wedding dress size worth of wedding gifts. Good luck! Fran429

i don't know whether it's done as a tradition simply over here but we used to use the material from your wedding dress to make your first childs christening gown. Then again that might not be feasable could you not use cuts of it to add to pillows or cover a keepsake book and add pictures of her wedding or even make her daughters prom dress with it or bits of it. I'm mainly thining of sentimental things but i suppose you could always just cut it up and sell the swatch bits as just that bits of material as well as the sequins and beads.

Because of my sisters being divorced her wedding dress wasn't special to her and she was a size 6 a friend of hers saw it and fell in love with it sold it on the spot for the amount the girl was going to spend on a new one $1000 and my sister only paid $250 25 years ago with the veil. If you take good pictures of it and put a reserved price of $700 I'm sure somebody out there will fall in love with it.
