My fourteen year old daughter is a virgin and she has just begun menstruation. Today is the end of the year pool party for school and guess what? She got her PERIOD! Now what do I do? I am scared as hell to tell her to use a tampax. I know that it should be all right. But has anyone used one in this situation? I really need to know ASAP! PLEASE HELP!

A tampax is rather a big step, you might want to start with pads, then when she is more comfortable with this monthly event, she can make the decision to move into tampax. The fact that she is still a virgin will not be a problem.

At the same time i only used tampons once or twice when i was younger and they were soo uncomfortable I couldn't keep them in for longer than 30 mins. There are SO many different brands and kinds of tampons now that she can try she should be fine.

i have used them to swim with before and they work just great. she just has to check it every few hours to make sure it's not about to fall out or anything. think of the alternative--she'd have to wear a pad to the pool party and not be able to swim at all. or she'd be unaware that she can't swim with a pad and it would be really embarrassing if she'd go swimming with it and it would get all soggy or fall out of her bathing suit. she could wear a pad and just not go swimming, but her friends will wonder why she can't swim or why she won't take off her shorts and they'll figure it out and maybe start teasing her about it because that's how kids and teenagers are. using a tampon will not take away her virginity! it will give her freedom to do all the things her friends are doing.

Thanks for your help Lakota! I do appreciated it. I know it wont hurt her. I just wanted to talk to someone who knew for a fact. I did make a not of taking off the cardboard applicator. That seems to make alot of sense. Thanks again my friend and Happy MyLotting. dl

You got some great responses, isn't it wonderful to have a place where we can ask others for help in certain areas!?
I was using tampons for a long time while I was a virgin. It was for the same reason at first - swimming - but as soon as I got the hang of it, that was much better for me than pads.

You've got that right! I love MyLot! I am a medical assistant. Medically I know what text books and teachers say. I am a woman so I know what I have done. I still wasnt happy with that so I went to my advisors. YOU GUYS! I think that MyLot is a great place to shoot the breeze. I dont have many friends due to the drama that they bring. I consider fellow MyLotters to be someone I can talk to honestly. I am thank ful for that. Im just glad the party was cancelled due to rain. I didnt have to even attempt it. Yeah Baby! Thanks friend! dl...

These menstrual cups are available in the US under the name "The Keeper"... you can find the information here, if you are interested:

For ladies in Canada, there's "The DivaCup":

I haven't tried this type of product yet but it's certainly an environmentally-friendly alternative to pads and tampons, too.

I got my period really early- when I was 10. My friends had a B-day pool party once, and she invited our whole, class boys and girls.
I just went and sat by the pool side the whole time, and everyone was like "why aren't you going to swim?"
I was absolutely humiliated.
My advice would be to not go to pool parties while on the red dot, and not use tampons at least for a couple more years.

Thankfully I wont have to worry about that today because the party was canceled. I just didnt want her to miss out on the party because its the end of the school year and she'll be going to a new school next year. I didnt want her to miss her old friends. This may be the last time she sees some of them.

From a mans point of view I'm just wondering. Why would a virgin no matter what age want to use a tampax over a pad? Check out the reason why many women switch from tampons back to pads when they see this product. I give free samples www.praiseitem.com

Hello my wife has never heard of mooncup, it must be a UK thing. Anyway, care for a free sample of the pad demonstrated on my website? www.praiseitem.com the 2nd video down is the demo. According to my wife any hundreds of 1000's of women, it's the best. See why and let me know if your interested.

errrm. because it's horrible to be sitting in your own waste. it gets cold and sticky, and it smells.
what you tip out of a mooncup doesn't smell, because it's not exposed to the air.
and it stays red, rather than brown and sludgey.
I am no longer a virgin, but when I was, used both tampons (which I'd never ever go back to after discovering the mooncup) and the mooncup itself.
I still bled when the big day came.
so it's fine for virgins.
lots of TMI in that post, but really, I can't bear the idea of brown, smelly, stale blood, which you get both with tampons and even more so with pads.

I am glad you asked. It takes a big man secure in his manhood to ask a question and stand behind it like you did.The answer to your question is simple. My baby girl was scheduled to go to the end of the school year pool party where according to her, everyone who's anyone will be there. That morning she woke up with a little something more than she had hoped. It was that time of the month. A panic set in... The only thing I could think of besides her not attending or sitting out watching everyone else have fun was a tampon. All I could think of was that how immature boys could be. THey would figure out why she was sitting out and start teasing her. I know they say it wont hurt you. I just wanted to know from experience. Luckily, the party was cancelled due to rain. I didnt have to worry about it any longer. SHE STILL USING PADS AND WILL CONTINUE TO UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE..dl

yea,it's fine.you just get the smallest one to handle the flow.
as long as it's not forced there shouldn't be any problem.

It really is ok. Let her. I used tampax long before I lost my virginity...it was all good. My daughters all used them at a very young age. there is nothing to worry about. She should not lose out on a good time for something like her period.

This is the thing to discuss with her doctor. It is fine but usually girls should start with pads and work up to tampons. They need to be changed at regular intervals and kids are forgetful. Then they need to be aware of TSS and the other issues.

Yes, it is perfectly safe. Just follow the instructions on the package. It took me a long time to start using tampons because I was afraid it would hurt. It really wasn't bad at all. I started out using the "junior" tampons. They are smaller and easier to insert.
My mom (who is a nurse) actually told me I should use tampons because when I lose my virginity someday it will hurt less.

When I was 11 and got my period, I didn't even tell my mom. I was too embarassed as she is 2 generations older than I am, we didn't really talk about it. I was much taller and puberty came much quicker for me than the other girls. I used to just roll up toilet paper and put in in my underwear and go about my day. Finally, I saw a playtex commercial and told my mom I got my period and I wanted to use that. I was a tomboy and loved to swim. I was not about to let my period stop me if I didn't have to. She reluctantly agreed and I have been using tampons ever since. It did not affect my flower on the fateful devirginizing event. The only thing I had a problem with as far as tampons was being worried about the string hanging out. Luckily I had some very good friends and we made a pact with eachother that we would let anyone know discreetly if their string was haning out. She should be ok. Maybe you can get her some some cute board-shorts along with a box of tampons so she knows you understand her point of view. Playtex makes the great compact versions and there are teen sizes now as well. Good luck, everything will be fine.

[b]I wouldn't risk going in the POOL wearing one, since the way they work is as a WICK, drawing moisture from point A to point B. BUT, that said, I just WISH I'd had a tampon when I got my first period at 11 years & 5 days! To my horror, the big old pad my Mom gave me fell OUT!
I still cringe when I think of that.
As for safe, a minimum-sized one would be perfectly safe, & much easier to use--especially if you find a lubricated brand, the kind that comes in little plastic applicators, & teach her how to use it.
Good luck.

As your daughter has talked to you about this and it seems to me you have a wonderful daughter Mum relationship then I really do think that she has talked to a friend in her year at school and they have got it all worked out between them and will just want Mum to do the purchasing.
