If you need a very light weight distribution which is lightening fast with all the necessary tools for purely for the coding then i would say try a distribution called Arch Linux.
It is very light on hardware and speed is simply amezing.
Thanks and take care.

Hi,
Have you tried Slax? I really recommend you this small Linux that has more features, based on Slackware. The current version now is 6.1.1 about 190 MB size (with it's core system, xorg, kde, devel, even games). It's can be booted from CD/DVD or UFD.
The best thing I like from Slax features is it's modular approach. So, you just add module that's needed to load from boot or load it by the fly. You can make module by compiling it or porting from another binary distro if you can't find it in site module directory. Module packaged with LZMA compression. Tools are already there.
Visit www.slax.org to get more information.
Thank you

I'd say that most any Linux distribution is "good for programming."
Ubuntu - all the packages are easily available for download through Synaptic.
Fedora - same applies, but their package manager isn't that clear to use.
Slax, as another person mentioned is also pretty good.
In the end, pretty much any of them are good for programming.

Yea.. I agree with you. There is someone says: Microsoft gives you Windows, Linux gives you a whole house. Regardless of distro model approach, there is always tools for programming or any other purpose.
I still use Ubuntu. This distro like other Debian-based-distro has customized/organized packages and easy installation system. When I need some package for Slax and facing connection problem, I've gone to Ubuntu package, mounting loop the squashfs, and make some modification with Slax Tools provided and vice versa.
