Pork - Pork on fire getting ready for dinner at Pattaya Hotel, Thailand.

Will you try new food that you've never tasted before? Myself I don't eat either beef or pork. But when I'm travelling, I don't mind trying new food for the sake of tasting it. Last year, my husband and I took a small holiday package to Pattaya, Thailand. It's a beautiful place, with lovely beach and a very accommodative hotel. On our stay there, I saw a whole pork was on fire getting ready for dinner (picture attached). It was my second night and I was quite astonished to see the seasoned and stuffed pork getting ready. In my mind, I keep telling I'm gonna try this for sake of trying and at the same time I don't eat pork. Yup, I did taste it atlast and it was good I should say! How about you? If you would have come across such situation, what will your reactions be? Do you go for it??

Hi Candy, I have also made it a point not to eat Beef and Pork. I have tried both just because all of them around me tasted it and was telling me to try. I have tried once or twice but could not accept it. Sometimes I do try for the sake of trying. When I have food with friends, I wouldn't like to hurt their feelings by saying no to the food they like sharing. Once like that I tried Calamari at a restaurant here, tasted nice and had it. But after that I got affected by severe acid reflux and felt very bad for eating that. I should have stopped at trying and tasting it. I have heard sea food doesn't agree with some. That was the case maybe.

Thank you for the immediate response Candy and for the compliments you have given me. I always try to understand and adapt with the feelings of my friends. My friends do that to me too.

I'm sorry to hear about your allergies for calamari. Yes, risk is another thing you take when you're trying new food. You're a good friend, I appreciate you for adjusting and understanding your friend's feelings.

I was a vegetarian for 23 years( I am now 26) and then due to my partner I gave chicken a shot and I actually liked it. I also tried beef and lamb. So I have experimented with food. Imagine being a vegetarian for your entire life and then deciding to eat meat. Its all a mind game. But then somethings, I will never be able to eat. Sea food for one. I just cannot eat it! And people eat snakes and things like that. That is a no no no for me.

Hey there, I appreciate your thrilling experience of leaving the herbivor lifestyle to carnivor's taste! I'm glad that you liked the non-veg. Yup, I'm a chicken lover myself! I suggest you to taste the seafood fried first. Make sure it's deep fried and crunchy, that way you won't get that fishy smell! It's too early for you to gi for snakes! Haha, but I won't b suprised if you like it when you try, as it just taste like fish! Thank you for sharing!

I have to admit that I am not very adventurous when it comes to food! I made one big mistake once a friend invited me over for dinner and was cooking me a meal, it looked and smelt real nice, I didn't realize what the ingredients were when I tasted it, it tasted rubbery and horrid, I wanted to spit it out but realized that it would be bad manners to do this and I quickly swallowed, I asked what it was and she said it was squid! Well that turned my stomach, I felt embarrassed at not being able to eat any more! So I am very careful what I taste because if I don't like it I need to spit it out or swallow it quickly. I am a fussy eater.

Yup, you shouldn't force yourself if you really don't wanna try it. But I love squid, and you should give a second try on squid which is deep fried! Thank you for sharing Wolfie34.

Hi I'm sure you must be facing difficulties while travelling. I was once vegetarian for 48 days for prayers purpose, and had to travel to Japan for business. Wow, I really had hard time looking for 'cooked' vegetarian food! How do you manage when you're travelling? DO you carry food on you?

i have no restrictions when it comes to food (except for blood, i dont anything that has still blood in it or those dishes with bloos as part of it, we have that here and it is called 'dinuguan' it's made from pork blood, and another one is chicken blood barbecue) as long as it is clean, and fit for human consumption i will eat it. i will try tasting exotic foods too. anything that i havent tasted yet, i may try it, as long as it is cooked, and not raw.

Hey, I really wish to travel with you one day! Though most of the time I taste food for he sake of tasting, I always think twice before taking the raw type. We have to be careful of the hygiene also and raw food carries more bacteria than cooked! Thank you for sharing Jayrene!

Yes! I would try to taste those foods new to me provided that these are "Halal", foods allowed to eat for moslems, and not "Haram", foods that are forbidden to eat, such as pork and all similar foods with a meat of pig on it! New menu attracts the willingness to eat and enhances one's appetite! Also testing a foods from different delicacies improved our taste. It could be a way to understand and appreciate others taste. Thank you! Happy mylotting ^_^!

I belong to a muslim country, however I'm not muslim. I have lits of muslim friends and I'm well aware of 'halal' and 'haram' foods. When I go out with my muslim friends, we do try new dishes, as long as it's 'halal'. Thank you for sharing and happy lotting to you too!

I like to try new foods and recipes, but there are some things I am squeamish about trying. Things like offal or haggis, I would have a very difficult time trying. On Top Chef Masters this past week, the chefs' challenge was to make dishes from beef tongue, tripe, beef heart. It looked as if they were successful in camouflaging it. If I didn't know what was in the dishes, I might have been inclined to try them. But if someone plopped a bowl of haggis in front of me, I doubt I could bring myself to try it. I'm reading a great book called The Man Who Ate the World by Jay Rayner. In one chapter he describes dining in a restaurant in Japan and being served a bowl of grilled sperm pouches from a blowfish. I could hardly read that passage. I just finished writing an article on the nutritional benefits of dandelion. It has more iron than spinach and more beta-carotene than carrots and broccoli. Knowing this doesn't make me any more likely to dig up weeds in my backyard.

I totally agree with offal and hagis actually! I will only try some fleshie or crunchy and I prefer to be told what I'm served with. Blowfisg sperms will never be my taste even it's grilled!! I don't mind the blowfish though..

Sure I would as long as it is edible and fit for human consumption. But what challenge me most is eating exotic food. So far, I have eaten one of our delicacies here in the Philippines, we call it "balot" and it's actually duck's egg with embryo of the chick in it. Although too much of it would boost up your cholesterol, but eating it just for the sake of tasting it is somewhat a test for my curiosity. Last year in Hongkong, along with my friends there was a place in there where we ate larvae sautéed in soysauce and some other spices. Nice taste and juicy too.
• India
27 Jun 09
I wonder how was the 'balit' tasted? Any close to duck taste or still have the duck's egg taste? I've seen the larvae on tv, and I definitely want to try it as well!
• Philippines
27 Jun 09
Balot still taste like duck (or chicken - the have the same taste) just soupy since the embryotic sac is still inside the egg and the egg was just boiled. The challenge is that you have to eat the embryo along with its little beak, chick feather and of course the meat. To some its grossly weird, but the taste is simply great, tasty and incomparable to other chicken/duck dishes.

Hi candy, First of all for any reason I would not take beef knowingly. And as for pork this too was not permissible for my belly but once accidentally I took and now I take pork without any hesitation and I swear it really testes nicer than mutton.

Trying new food is ok for some. But I would never eat pork meat. I would still stick to it. If there is beef or chicken or fish, or vegetable that one I can eat, but I would skip on the pork meat. My family and I don't eat pork. So if ever we are traveling, we do order chicken or beef or vegetables to eat. Be it by plane, they ask you which one you would select. As long as nobody is forcing us to eat such food that we really don't eat, I am okey with that.

I eat anything that is well cooked. I would not be caught near a fast food chain save when I take my grandchildren on special ocations but I´m also teaching them to learn to eat a good meal. But even there, I will drink a soda or carbonated water while they fill themselves with those hamburgers. But I have tried (and liked) many types of different food. I have eaten frongs (chicken is better), goat, rabbit, and all sorts of birds. As for sauces and spices, they add zest to food. I have been very happy eating ethnic food from all oaround the world. Take care

Hi Candy, that is a barbecued/roast pork, and I believe it must have tasted really good. I enjoy eating food from other countries, especially their local fares, and Thailand has really great food, especially their spicy tomyams. I like to try new dishes, except for strange stuff like ants, cockroaches, snakes and wildlife.

Hi Lazeebee, yup, you're right about the roasted pork. I must agree, it was one delicous dish!! Thailand is a great place for food, and I do miss their Tom Yam as well. Wish I could go there soon!! Thank you for sharing and happy lotting!

Well as long as it is palatable and fit for human consumption i don't think there is any harm in trying new dishes out.....but i have sworm myself i will never get involved in acts where i have to taste rodents and insects as part of my meal......there are many places where you get to eat snakes, cockroaches and stuff.....but then yes if it is other things like you have just mentioned i would not hesitate to give it a try........I myself have done hotel management so i have taste a variety of food products, some people can make anything out of a simple preparation..........now that's innovation......and how well you do it is all that matters........

Hi John, I understand what you mean, but will you consider if the insects or rodent that you refuse to try is served looking so delicous? Would you take the chances? I have tasted rat, when I was on business trip to China. Actually to be honest, I didn't know it was rat and thought it was chicken! I've tasted snake as well. Yesterday, my boss told me that crocodile meat is so delicous too. I don't know where to get one, but if I come across, I'll go for it!
