Hey peoples...I was just wondering: what is the point of Twitter? I mean, sure, I have an account at https://twitter.com/771982, but I'm still wondering what the big deal is. Some people say it's a great way to stay in contact with people. But isn't what all the social networking sites are for? What do you guys think?

haha Slyanus, you do bring out an interesting point. Unless you are some famous and rich guys who want to promote an movie or a song, I doubt there is much use in posting about your personal interests and thoughts.
Since you have an account, you may want to follow those big companies. Sometimes you will get to know some good offers.
Yesterday I read in the forum in Hubpages about using Twitter to promote our writings, but one writer said it's a waste of time, might as well spent time to write more articles. I think she has a point.

haha Slyanus, I dont have all these social networking account too. Can't bear to think that whatever information you post in the web will stay forever.
Do you know that many employers search facebook to find more information about the job applicants? So if those folks compare about their friends, teachers or boss, that will reflect badly on them.
I think it's really a waste of time using social networking to promote my blogs or articles. As long as my blogs and articles are interesting, and search engines index them, readers will come through the search engines.

Yeah, I don't there's much of a point to it. Actually, I don't see a point to the other "social networking" sites either. I mean, I can just pick up a phone and call my friends; that's why I have a phone with their information. And I just canceled my Twitter account AND my Facebook. There whole thing is stupid.

Yes, you may think this way. Well it is also cell phone friendly I have heard. But note that you DO have a twitter account nonetheless.

Yea, but I can update my friends my simply picking up the phone and calling them or emailing them. Is there a greater purpose?

True indeed, true indeed. LOL. To tell the truth, my girlfriend convinced me to get a Twitter profile. She has a myspace (another site I didn't the point of). But right now we're a competition to see who gets the most Twitter viewers lol, I know...silly.

I don't really understand the purpose of twitter either.Twittering is basically the equivalent of a facebook update. So in reality, twitter is facebook but without everything except for the status updates. I think myLot is more fun and you can make money from it.

Yeah, mylot is A LOT better than Twitter -- or Facebook -- in my humble opinion. They need to come with a "social networking" site that's geared towards making a decent amount of money. Then everybody will win.

PROPS to you for asking such a question. It's simple...yet not-so-simple. =P
You know I was wondering - similarly, Myspace, or other social sites. I feel like if you have one, then that should be enough. No?
I have facebook - got it back in the day when I was in college, and wanted to "waste" time instead of study. Now I'm rarely in there. NEVER got caught in the MySpace craze. I can actually say I don't have a Myspace page. Then twitter - I have an account mainly because someone said that I can make money off it. But he just kind of "disappeared" into thin air. Well the concept did. Have not logged in it since then.
GREAT discussion - enlighten us all, our twittering Mylotter folks!

Yeah, I'm waiting for someone on Twitter to enlighten us on this issue. But maybe there isn't a "true" purpose to Twitter; it's just something that people use to pass the time. You know, that's interesting that you got an account because you wanted to make money off it. That's one of the reasons for it, for sure; it's just another marketing ploy.

I'm not too sure either since I have other websites that I can update people about what I'm doing. Some people go overboard with Twitter & wanna tell their exact location. It seems too personal and too easy for people to stalk others. I never put that info on my pages. I don't have twitter. I think it's too much cos I have too many already.

Hey,
Well, for me I like to think of Twitter as a small tool that allows you to tell your friends and just about everyone what you are doing at that particular time. It is actually quite handy, but if you do nothing your whole life, it is not useful. Make sure you have a good day, God bless and Happy Lotting!!

Yeah in my opinion...It's not safe. People can track you down (people you don't know having an idea what you do everyday just creeps me out.... maybe later when you are alone in your house a stranger will instanly appear. not safe nowadays) It's weird taht you put everything there. eating breakfast doing this and that. But then again it's only my opinion about the subject matter and I'm not trying to make people who use twitter not use it. Peace man!
ciao!

i agree. i don't get twitter at all. i am sick of hearing ryan seacrest talk about twitter like it is the best thing since sliced bread. i signed up just to see what all the fuss is about and was very disappointed. if the concept is just to update your followers of everything you did, why can't i just stick with facebook/myspace? i mean, you can update your status and soo much more! btw, i updated my status on facebook to: regrets joining twitter.
lol!!!
