I'll first confess I'm guilty of posting some really long boring posts. But thankfully, I've cut down on them quite a bit. So, what do you opine of the long one? Do you really bother reading the entire response? Does it in any way indicate the profound-ness of the knowledge of the poster? Or do you simply hate them?

Hi cannibal, To be frank I get repulsive when I see a looooooooooooooong discussion topic andf there are instances that I have retreated. Personalty I prefer to give not more than 10 - 12 liners where everything is there for you to re4spond. Even too long response I am not in favour of. I have marked that they use tautology.

This is an exception anyway. And thank you for the elaboration.

Hiya Hmmm, honestly that happens with everyone, unless of course if the opinion is in the reader's favor; or if the reader is an ardent fan of the poster. You're right. But I feel, it's not always tautology. As an instance there is a user named Gadhisunu in myLot who, I'd say is the champ of the long ones. However, I read many of his responses carefully and seldom did I find the use of the said tactic. In fact, he displays a real profound knowledge of religions every time he's on song. Even when I did post the long ones earlier, I tried my best to refrain from the use of any tautology. May be the users you've come across have done it. Fair enough! Also may be they're greater in number.

I'm guilty of loooooonnnnnnggg responses myself. Sometimes I just get off on a tangent and really try my best to bring it back full circle, ya know. I don't know if the discussion-starter actually reads my response (I RARELY get any comments back, though I get a "best response" once in while, which is very cool - this is another tangent! You see!). Anyways - sometimes i do go through a long posts/discussion and leave a response. As long as the title grabbed my attention and the first paragraph wouldn't let go - I'm hooked. Now there are those who have attention-grabbing titles, but have ZERO content. With those ones, I just hit the "X" button to close. Hehehehe... Cheers!

Lol I found company! The other tangent, lol old habits die hard. May be you love writing from the bottom of your heart. That at least is the case with me! I'm fortunate you didn't encounter the 'X' button for this discussion of mine. ;=P

loooooooooooong responses are good as long as it makes sense. specially when it is about general information. my responses are not that long, first because is it takes too much time for me to type all the words. i just direct to the point. 7 to 8 sentences would be appropriate in discussions.cheers!

I read long posts if there's gaps between the paragraphs, and the paras are nice and short. But I skip right by great blocks of unbroken text. If I've a lot to say, I write to another forum - or my blog - no one replies to me here, no matter what I write!

It really depends on whatthe person is responding to. Usually I over look them, after I have scanned them for something interesting. If there is something that catches my eye, I will read them, If not I go onto something else.

That's interesting. Fair too! You've given me a clue. May be one should use eye-catchy words in the long responses.

I don't necessarily hate them but the first piece of the text should really appeal to me or i'll just answer something out of the blue. Yeah sorry guys I have to confess that... I am thankful for looooooooooooooooooooong responses though as it shows your discussion is really worth discussing.

Apt there Dia. Nice to see you have no issues with the long ones. There are many epic kinda responses on myLot and turning them down for this reason would be unfair. As for the appealing beginning, you're just in demanding that. Thanks for responding.

Long responses are fine if they are relevant to the discussion and not repeating the same point. It shows that a discussion is worth discussing, and if you started the discussion I think it is important to read the posts. However, it doesn't neccesarily mean they have more knowledge of the subject. Consise responses can also be informative.
