Has anyone had a squirrel problem and solved it without drowning them?

SQUIRRELS are chopping off all the flowers from the plants that are growing in my garden, that I planned in my large backyard. I have a large tree and the squirrels seem to love that tree. I'm not chopping down the tree. I've tried red pepper, and Hallapino pepers; does anyone have another solution, besides drowning. Please do not post about drowning, I will not consider that. But perhaps, their is something else like something with a strong smell that they do not like. I just bought two large sunflower plants, and in a matter of a few hours that the yard was unsupervised, the squirrels chop the large flowers off. The also chop off rose flowers and buds. I'm getting frustrated. HELP!
