Sorting out/ throwing away old stuff.

I didn't go out with my family today because I said I would be sorting out my room and throwing away/ packing away for the charity shop old clothes etc. However, I really can't get myself to do it. They'll be mad when they come back to find I haven't even done anything but I tried starting and I just got bored. I think I can only do this when I have someone to help me and talk to as otherwise it's just a miserable thing to do. Although it would be lovely to see my room tidy again. As well as this, I find it hard to throw things away. I'm one of those people who can't bring myself to chuck out items even though I haven't touched or seen them in years because I feel like they mean something to me, such as things that I had when I was younger. But they take up a lot of space and are useless! Are you the same or do you enjoy throwing away old items?

My husband and I have sold on Ebay and given away a lot of things that we no longer want or need. We both read a paperback book by Peter Walsh called, "It's All Too Much." We bought it through Amazon. It is a fantastic book, as it speaks about the emotional side of letting go of items. I recommend it highly. I never thought my husband would let go of anything, until he read that book. The rooms of our house are clutter free now, and it is very liberating. We've made some money selling stuff on Ebay too, and it's amazing the things people will buy. The book is not expensive, because it's paperback; about $8.00. Good luck.

Thanks for the response. I might check it out although I'm a terrible reader! Ebay is a very good point too. I really would like to sell some stuff but I'm not sure if people would buy it. One of them is old VHS tapes. I'm not sure if people would buy them as like me, a lot of people have moved on to DVDs and now even Blueray (although that's not me).

Last year, we sold our large house in Enland and bought a small apartment in Spain. We kept our very small holiday chalet in Cornwall as an English base. Obviously, we had to get rid of a lot of stuff. I did lots of car boot sales, put stuff on Ebay and made regular trips to the rubbish dump. I didn't have a problem with it, as the logistics dictated that we simply couldn't keep everything, or even a quarter of it. My husband, however, grew up during the Second World War and the period of rationing that followed, so he's loath to part with anything. When he's out of the way, I get rid of rusty chains and other such things, and when he asks where they are, I swear I haven't seen them. Despite this, we still have a room full of stuff in our chalet that hasn't been used for over a year, and is therefore best defined as rubbish. I'm going to have to be firm with him!

I am one to throw and sort all the time. I can't stand having stuff all over the house. I go threw my closet twice a year. If I haven't worn it in a year, it is either donated or thrown away. Just take one hour and you can get your room partly done. Go for it. YOu will feel great when it is all done.
