I'm a registered massage therapist from Canada. My thoughts is that it depends on what type of pain. For example if it was a recent injury lets say a car injury (whiplash) then you do need some clearance from the doctor or physiotherapist before getting a massage. The reason because the injury is probably acute meaning it is currently inflammed. Massage can still help by working around the injured area. Another example is if a person gets pain from movements, a common one is "I woke up this morning and I can't move my neck". Then massage can help by reducing or lessening the tension of tight muscles which is limiting the range of motion, which causes pain. So in conclusion you can still get a massage depending on the pain. I hope this helps.
