I miss having pets, but I cannot do so at my apartment. When I was a child myself and then when raising my own children, we always had pets and often raised orphan animals, as well. Whenever something happened to them, I worried. If one died, I always felt a deep sadness. They were not just "animals" to me, but more on the order of a family member. If you have pets or used to, do you consider them a friend, a family member, or just an animal?Karen

Well i have a pet dog and she has been with us for about 4 years now, we did not get her home right when she was small, one of our neighbor was leaving the country and had no plans to take her along so we decided to take her and from that time she is with us......and yes she is just like a family member for us.....she is the first one to come and greet us if we go out and come.......she sleeps with us in our room, we have made special arrangements for her.........its fun being with her.......

Hello John, yes, pets become a big part of our lives. They love and accept us no matter what. They have a way of making us just plain feel good in their presence. I am glad you enjoy her :) Karen

I do think for a lot of us pets tend to become "part of the family" even though they are not humans. We come to feel so close to them, to love their ways, and they do cheer one up :) Thank you for contributing to the discussion. Karen

you know, its rather a matter of how they react to me some are just nice animals that live in my house, I can't really touch them so they really aren't "pets" they just live with me Others tho, are friends, they come around to see how I am, and I do the same for them. Then there are the family member cats. the 2 in my avatar, Rygel, the big one, and Oliver, the little one, are members of the family. Oliver we raised from a week old, doing the whole bottle and butt wiping thing.

Well, I can hardly count the 3 new kittens as pets, they run every time we get close, but they are heart breakingly cute.

Ah, so the kittens are still afraid of humans? I've had several wild kittens show up as strays in the past. It takes a bit of time for them to "trust." But yes, no matter what, they are sooo cute!

Hi Elic. It does matter about exactly what the pet is and how much they want/need to interact with humans. Your cats are sweet! It is a challenge, but also a good feeling to raise an orphan, like you did with Oliver. Karen

My animals are members of the family. They are still animals but they are family. Each one has their own personalities. Khuay my flame point Siamese is a loving funny little guy. He knows when I have extreme pain and cuddles as close as he can and purrs his heart out trying to make me feel better. Willy, Khuay's brother, will sleep by my leg that I had the surgery, with his head resting gently on the sore spot. He too will purr as much as he possibly can to sooth my nerves. Murphy is 16 years old and is a Lynx point Siamese. She sleeps by my head every night and purrs me to sleep. Her life has always revolved around me and making sure that I am okay. Ding Ding (Dinglebeary) is a Maine Koon cat and he is the guard cat. He will sleep at the foot of my bed or on top of the cupboard in a position that would be easy for him to attack if he felt the need to do so. He comes to me and looks deep in my eyes as if to say that he is here to protect me. The dogs too share the same traits as the cats. Each has their job and nurturing sides. Abby, my sister's dog, has taken on the role of care giver and protector. She has even become more so since I got home from the hospital after the knee replacement surgery. She has appointed herself my guardian and nurse. She seldom leaves my side and if she does it's only for a few minutes. She makes sure that she is in an area where she can always see me...even when I took a fall Sunday. She was right by my side making sure that I was okay. That is far more than my own flesh and blood would do for me. Yes, I consider my animals family members...and they are my friends, confidants, and joy givers. People may consider me crazy, but the unconditional love they give to me is more valuable to me than all the money in the world.

You're right about the pain, even though it is extremely tireing right now I know it will be worth it in the long run. Khuay has really been a sweetheart through all this. This morning I sat down on the couch with my leg propped up and my pillow behind my back...and Khuay came up, jumped up on my lap and settled down for a nap. I woke up two hours later with Khuay still on my lap and feeling better after having the short nap with my furry friend. Thank you for the wishes for getting well. Toni

Hi Loverbear. First, I surely do not think you're crazy. Many of us feel as you do about pets. And secondly, I am so sorry to hear of your surgery...never pleasant, but the results are usually worth the pain. Our pets do come with their own unique personalities and develop their roles in the family. I feel joy that you have such protective and loving company with which to surround yourself :) Heal quickly... Karen

I have horses and yes they are more than pets , they are part of our family. They get fed and watered just like I was giving my kids food and water. They get vitamin supplement , get bathed, get their feet trimmed, get wormed and get their shots regulary. Some people even say they are spoiled, well maybe they are. But you can look at my animals and see that they are not only taken care of but loved as well.

Hello GG. I know a man who also has horses and takes excellent care of them, as you do yours. He calls them his friends. But when we decide to take on any pet, that is how it should be. They need proper care, love, and attention, like all living beings. Thank you for sharing your experiences :) Karen

I'm not really against animals and don't hate them....but I;m not really an animal person either. I'm not comfortable with animals coming close to me. I'd rather watch them from a distance. So, it's pretty obvious that I wouldn't have a pet animal at home. Fortunately for me, my husband and kids are the same. But I have neighbours who have pet dogs. Though there is a rule saying that no pets are allowed in the apartment, a few do have pet dogs. From what I've seen, they consider them like family members....one person even refers to the pet as his daughter.

Hi SV, some people are just not animal people, I know. It is good that the family is in agreement :) Like your friend, I too know people who call their pets their babies and love them like family. Thank you for sharing your input :) Karen

Hello Eight. I know others who are also afraid of animals. The ones I used to fear were packs of wild dogs that roamed the countryside where I grew up! I'm better now, though lol. Karen

Hi Karen! Many many years ago, we used to have a small puppy and we would treat him like our family member. It was great fun playing with him. I think pets when they start living in your house, become more like friends and family members and you start taking care of them like your family member(s) and they treat you in the same way.

Hello Deepak, I agree when you say that pets who live in our homes do become like family. Most of them feel that they are family anyway. They need our care and love, as all living beings need such things. And aren't puppies sweet? So tiny and energetic :) Thank you for your input on the discussion. Karen

I have lots of pets and I treat my pets as family. I think animals have feelings like we do and hurt as we do. I have 4 dogs, guinea pig,2 hamsters and tons of fish. They all get spoiled. I like spoiling my pets with treats from the pet store. Even when my dogs have babies its hard to sell them because I get so close to them.

I get very close to my animals even as soon as they are born. I am a major animal lover. If I could take care of all the animals in the world to make sure they get what they need I would. But I know I can't. I have a neighbor that takes in abused animals and she takes care of them. It is a nice thing that she does.

Hi Strawberry. I also think that pets have feelings, as do human beings. It is nice to provide them with the love and the spoiling that they need to thrive. :) And selling one is indeed not easy! Karen

You are so right. Your neighbor is a good person. It is hard to understand why anyone abuses animals. I hear about it on the news too often and it is heart-breaking! Karen

Hi Jo...I think perhaps guinea pigs and hamsters do not feel as much like "family" we because they don't require as much interaction as dogs and cats do. I know many people think of their main pets as friends or family, as they really are part of the household and part of each day for us :) Karen

well, i would definitely consider them as a family member in terms of the love, affection, food, etc is concerned. but, you do not ensure that there are certain things to be taken care of in terms of hygiene. you would have to consider her a animal in this regard.

Whatever else, they are surely a big part of life for the people who have them. Most people I know even bathe them in the bath tub with a special soap or shampoo made for the particular pet :) Thank you for sharing you thoughts. Karen

I dont have any pets now but I used to have a whole litter growing up. I of course worried about them and missed them when they went away but for some reason, I could never see them as a family member. Maybe a friend because you can confide in an animal without having to worry about your secret spreading like wild fire but there is still something about human interaction that I crave that I cant get from any animal. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for those cuddly creatures because in the grander picture of things, they are helpless and need love just as much as humans do.

Hi...there is something very endearing about pets, as they depend on us to care for them. And yes, they need love, just as humans do. I'm glad you had them when you were younger :) Thank you for your input. Karen

Taking care of a pet is beginning to be a very big deal! Some people take better care of their pets than they do their "people." I like animals but there is a limit to how far I am willing to go. They are fun, but right now it is too much of a responsibility.

Oh... that's so sweet of you to take care of orphan animals. Not many can do that. I remember in my childhood days, one day when i was coming back from school i saw to pups on the road (stray) all alone. I wanted to take them home but since my parents wont like it i went home with a sad heart. Then in the evening i got an idea, told mom & dad i am going to a friends place, when i came back i brought home the 2 cute little ones with me. And ya i LIED to my parents that my friend gave them to me for free. THE IDEA REALLY WORKED...... Now 1 is at my grandma's home, other one passed away. My parents know the truth now, and they were so shocked when i told them after years passed away.... but by that time even they got attached to them so they just laughed. Now we have a new dog, just one. Daily i play with her & know what she loves to walk with 2 legs... Ya that's true, she has her 4 legs alright, but still.... I love her a lot.... Now she is my best friend & she is absolutely crazy.....

Hi Jack. The orphans need someone, yes? Whether pets or people, they are precious and a joy to care for. Aww, what a sweet thing to take those two puppies home, and a very innovative way to get your parents to accept them lol. Of course they would love them...pets are hard to resist. Enjoy your new dog :) Karen
