How many people out here believe that racism is still alive and kicking?? Do you think that we live in a more racist world or a ignorant multicultural fantasy world?
I personally think there is more racism because people seem to have more choice to be racist about. I feel that the world we live is more open to multiculturalism but, at the same time has several unresolved racist issues among races. Instead of dealing with the root of the problem of a person not liking someone simply because the color of there skin is still a issue that won't go away. I think that because there are more races getting together its becoming more of the norm you see it on tv, magazine, everyday life, but I also think that because of this melting pot people want to think that racism is gone. Have you ever experienced racism know I have. And I think the only cure is a person's individual choice to change as far as the world I'll leave that problem up to GOD! Whats your opinion?

my dear friend lovenish, with due respect to you -
the word racism or racial discrimination in itself is self explanatory - discrimination based on race.

thanks my dear friend for explanation of discrimination........
in my country its also topmost......in my country anyhow if people wants to be equal then or always politicians wants to make a difference between people..
govt has divided the country in states on the basis of religions. then govt divided the states and country on the bases of cast and race......such as general, schedule cast, rural, urban etc......
and in jobs govt provided managements reservation and promotion and admission priority to particular cast and in all these a normal general man is suffering a lot..
in university admissions the first 800 seats and first good colleges are awarded to sc cast even if they have passed school only with 35% marks out of 100.
in jobs if 100 sc cast person get promotion then only 20 general cast are allowed to take promotion.
if any general says sc to any sc cast man then he or she will be jailed without any proof........
if police man does not like u then he will put u in jail just saying that he has send me abusing words...............
if u apply for job then the first 70% seats will be reserved for sc cast men even if they dont have good marks.......
while filling every form of govt or private for any task u will have to mention there whether u r sc, general, urban, rural etc and their u will not find any option asking r u Indian.
even in fees of college and other programms the sc casts are allowed to pay lower amount...
i am not saying that sc or others are bad........but saying the govt and politicians are bad......
whatever we have learned one thing....the top seat is always vacant......anybody can achieve it with hard work and dedications

very interesting comment lovenish, I don't live in India so I am unaware of the actual class system and how it is set up. But reading how lovenish explained class system seems to effect all aspects of everyday life. That is unfortunate and since it has been going on for a long time through government and it's hard to change things within government but it's not impossible, so I guess in this case race dose not play a big part in discrimination but class rank I'm I correct? Thanks for your comment lovenish and mkrishna.

yeah i think the world has turned more racist because of political correctness being totally out of control, things that never bothered black people before now all of a sudden are offensive even though black people don't agree. E.G. where my mum used to work they told everyone they were not allowed to ask for a black coffee because it is racist how stupid is that, next it'll be you can't ask for a black pen or black ink in a shop.

Yes I agree with you political correctness is out of control! how else or you supposed to ask for coffee or describe how you want it! coffee is not white, purple or yellow it's black ha ha If I was there they day at your mom's job I would have said well what about when i go to Starbucks or dunkin doughnut how would you recommend i ask for my coffee because i don't want to be political incorrect and offend any one i just want a cup of black coffee! I'm not joking about racism because it is a serious issue but in this case yes it is STUPID!!! Thanks for replying have a good day.

Unfortunately yes, I do think its still very much alive. As someone mentioned, a lot of people say they aren't racist but their behavior says differently. I have experienced it somewhat. I'm white though and live in an area that is mostly white. I do remember when I was in college though that there was this girl in our dorm that hated white people and was pretty outspoken about it.
Things have change quite a bit over the years though. That's something to be thankful for. I am afraid though that there will always be racists out there.

dear u said u r white.........let me comment a little about it....that
by saying i am white what u wanna say....
are u the color WHITE
are u the white sking
are u white head,hand,face, etc
if u say i am leg, hand, head, hair, nail, eyes, mouth then what does u mean.
u say my head, my hair, my mouth, my hand, my body.......then it clearly reveals that u are not body.....but u own body.
so the result is u the soul the separate power from body who own this body do intelligent tasks of thinking.
the body is mortal but u r immortal

I think there is a lot less racism here in the UK than there used to be, at least on black people here in Salford. I was friends with some of the only black people in school (I am white) and witnessed some terrible language throughout the early years but everyone seemed to become more and more accepting and I haven't heard some bad racism in quite a while. Although perhaps that is a sign of how people must mature and therefore younger people are more likely to be racist then change their state of mind as they mature?
I do have to say though that I think some people let others down by using racism as a way of getting white people in trouble because of the difference in skin colour, although at times it can be due to a misunderstanding. I am speaking again of in school, but it does seem that at times if someone upsets someone of a different colour due to misunderstandings and/or disagreements it is automatically put down or investigated as racism when it is nothing to do with colour and there are some proper accounts of real racism that should be being investigated. In fact that is often not the fault of the people involved but those who get involved such as teachers who must be reading and going by ridiculous set guidelines. I hope all of that made sense.
I think it is a possibility that a lot of people of different races gaining absolute popularity in the celebrity world in all ways such as acting, singing really help stop racism as they are popular people and if other people of different races show admiration to them and they show friendship they are role models and the children of today will see no fault in doing the same.
Terrorism and the war in Iraq I feel has likely hurt the muslim community however.
Over all, I suppose that the answer to this changes depending on what country you live in and whereabouts in that country you live. As well as what race you are. Opinions will always be different.

You live in the UK I have never heard of any racial problems there unlike in the us. I do think that sometimes racism is often used for discrimination cases when in actuality it was a misunderstanding or disagreement. Yes I agree it's not the fault of an individual situation but people on the outside looking in! Same as the school getting invovled in a child's family life and gets the police and social services involved, when in fact it was a bruise from a fall you know. How do you think that racism is used to get white people in trouble, I don't understand your view? yes it dose depend on the country you live and experiences you have had. Yeah now a days Thanks for responding have a good day

Well sometimes I have seen that people of a different race have taken advantage of the fact that something can be easily looked into as racism when there is a disagreement between people of different races if that makes sense. So they will realise that it is not to do with colour but if a teacher gets involved and says that the other person can get punished for it, they will change the story and say that racism was part of it. But on some occasions of course racism is part of it, just not always.

Hello Apgh...what an interesting and in-depth discussion you have started. I believe that for one reason or another, racism in some for will always exist. Some people just cannot get past it! I have indeed experienced rascism. For every "color" of skin that there is, someone will lump an entire group in a category, and find or invent reasons to "hate" or look down upon the whole race. To me, it is just color, just skin. No one better or worse than another. The inside is what truly counts.
While some would love to think we've made great sides in eliminating racism, or just because cultures and races intermingle more than in the past does not mean racism is gone. It is still very visibly present in the world.

I also wonder about all of those things. I cannot see myself ever having instigated such horrors and have trouble understanding people who did/do. As you said, they were done, and the reality of devastating aftermaths still live on.

Hi PeacefulWmn9, Yes I agree this is a very interesting discussion I agree with what you say totally. You I often wonder what the world would be like if there was no hate, racism and discrimination. I try to imagine what the world would be like if American Indians were never forced off there land and were still across the US, and if Hitler never killed so many people What wold the world be like, if blacks were never taken as slaves and came to America, Brazil, Haiti and other places by choice? And so on. But unfortunately these atrocities has happened and yes its sad to say that its looks like racism will always be a problem that ever human being will have to deal with one way or another. Thank for your input.

Yes I am well aware of racism in India I have herd of the social class issues your treated based on your economic class. I also herd of problems with skin complexion issues with particularly female Indians trying to complete with western beauty standards they will lighten there skin. I think it's very sad and unfortunate. How do Indian men see complexion would you say when choosing a mate that is taken into consideration to want a female with a lighter complexion vs a darker one? In the US complexion is a huge issue people of darker people of color are always faced with issues from wanting to be lighter. And it seems like people who are darker usually choose to have a partner who is lighter complected. I know this sounds crazy but sometimes its so that the children have a better chance to have a lighter skin tone. Have you ever seen the movie THE NAMESAKE by Mira Nair it's a really great Indian movie that talks about the trails and tribulations of a Indian family who tries to maintain their heritage while living in the US and how their children are faced with racial and cultural issues. If anyone of you who responded gets a chance to watch the movie feel free to share your opinions with me and or my lot. thanks for responding have a good day

I too feel that racism is on the rise…not the typical colour-based racism of last centuries but a far more dangerous kind as more and more people mingle and migrate and competition for a better lifestyle chokes us regularly. People of a particular region, who have till now enjoyed and lived their own lifestyle and tradition, suddenly feel threatened by influx of newer people who are no less aggressive as they fight out to settle in newer places and grab a share of the pie. This new kind of racism is not about dominating another race but rather protecting one’s own territory, jobs, security, culture…the more people feel threatened of being usurped, the more racist they are bound to become.

A lot of people deny being racist but actually practice racism. We can see this every where, in schools, offices, even in service industries. Although, we have gone global and multicultural, people still feel comfortable being with people of their own race and tend to discriminate. The solution then is to create more exposure to other races, develop inter-racial relationships so we get used to the presence of other people. That way we feel comfortable being with them although we are not of the same color and though we don't speak the same language.

hi mympha, yes i agree with you, I love meeting people of different nationalities, but I do notice that sometimes in some cases people cling to there own culture. and I notice that sometimes that when I go into a store of another culture i notice different reactions to my presence some maybe good some maybe bad. One good experience was when I went into this Indian store and I would go there regularly but the lady was never extremely friendly but never rude. But one day we struck up a conversation of mutual interest and she opened up. So I guess even though people there may be a language barrier if there is a common interest than we can overcome our racial issues. Thanks for your comment have a good day

racism is the belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. in the case of institutional racism, certain racial groups may be denied rights or beneifits.

According to a number of psychologists, racism in America has been on the decline. But remember that this conclusion was mainly based on questionnaires that white Americans were asked to fill. It became apparent to many researchers that racism had changed face due to the many legislations and the politically correct nuances of the modern world. When the researchers used implicit (covert) tests like reaction rates, and other indirect ways of measuring prejudice, they realised that most people are still as racists as ever. Although they would normally deny this in verbal tests, other implicit tests seemed to show some underlying racists reactions. What makes this even more interesting is that this covert racism only surfaces in certain situations for example; when people are under pressure, when they are in a group, when social norms do not show how one is supposed to act in a certain situation.
So yes, racism is still with us here and now but it has changed face.
However, not all is so pessimistic, the fact that overt racism is now a thing of the past is sort of good news.

I am sure racism exist today 100%.I think honestly it all has to do with pre determined views of someone or of a race. A personal example of this was I used to go to Fordham University in the Bronx and took the train everyday through the city along the way. And I notice this Arab guy who went to my school if he sat on a seat, no one else would sit next to him. Yes, they would rather stand, stare, point and make disgusted faces at him . Me? I was happy because he became my travelling buddy, and I always got a seat. This is just one example of many I can go into I have witnessed in my life.It has to do with sterotyping and the media plays the biggest role of all. They are the chief culprits. A white guy who gets in a fight is a " tough guy" who is standing up for himself, a colored guy who gets in a fight is a " thug, a hoodlum". We all know it is true. You know I heard a song a while back, it was a reggage song and one line I always rememberd is " until the color of a man skin is of no more signifance than the color of his eyes, there will always be war, violence and crimes." I must say how true is this. We have come a long way yes, but not nearly as much as we should. I think the number of "closet racist" in today's society is through the roof. Changing times have detered them from coming out and publicly declaring themselves racist, but their minds are still programmed to be one. I don't know how to change that, I guess each person have to look into themselves and see where they stand and want needs to be changed.
