How expensive are your tastes?

Many of us have different likes and dislikes. I have expensive tastes when it comes to clothes[but only when I can afford them] but in all other ways I do not much worry. I need simple food that does not have too much of oil in it and affordable fruits and vegetables. I am quite happy dreaming, reading whatever is at home and occupying myself.I do not mind staying in a rented place or whatever. However, internet is something that I cannot be without.I can afford this and so this does not pose any problem. Do you have expensive unfulfilled tastes that make you long for something?

Once upon a time I used to be high and mighty. I loved clothes and jewellery, and kept up with the latest trends. I used to drive a black and red sports car. My haunt place were posh restaurants and never step into sidewalk cafes. I continued this sort of lifestyle for some 20 years. Even in my late 40s, I used to walk my 'power walk' around the neighbourhood in short shorts. I had the figure. I attended a meditation course and try out meditation myself. Many interesting changes happened soon after. I become more tolerant, down to earth and now I changed 360 degrees. I sold a lot of my jewellery, sold my car and now drive around with pride a simple home grown model instead. And gone too are the love for eating in posh restaurants. I am happy to live a simple life.

Hi zandi! You always come with great contributions to a discussion. So, does meditation give extra tolerance to a person? If it makes a person less emotional I too would like to learn meditation because I am a very emotional person.

Thanks kalav for the good words. It sure makes my ears flip a bit. LOL. I recommend to all who wish to live a meaningful life to try out meditation. Meditation not only has psychological benefits but also helps the physical body.

Hi Kala! I have no expensive taste or liking for something, as you have stated. I prefer to buy good quality clothes, however, it does not mean that those clothes should be very expensive. I've seen some people buying and telling that they are wearing a shirt which cost them Rs.2500-3000/-, I just cannot afford to spend this much amount of money on a shirt, specially when I can make do with less expensive but good quality branded clothes. I also believe in simple living and have no special desires to buy something extra-ordinary. I think contentment is important rather than cost of an item and how one can keep oneself happy in the given circumstances. Good post!

Contentment is very crucial to life Deepak .I too beloieve in it and I feel it gives a person greater peace and happiness and a s aresult people around htem are also peaceful. You have one discontented person in your immediate family and that would make you spend much of one's time arguing and fighting or lecturing or feeling miserable.

Yes, Kala, you are right, even if one person feels discontended in a family, all the peace and calmness would get disturbed.

Sometimes I am a spend thrift where I want the best of everything. On some days I am a miser where I will not even want to spend on the simple things on life....finally my spending totally depends on my moods...but generally I am not too fond of very expensive things....

Hi kala, I am like you , my tastes are simple and most of the time very inexpensive. It is only rarely that I splurge on things. I am not too fond of expensive jewellery nor do I want any branded stuff. I prefer to buy and use what I like and enjoy. In fact I don't even have expensive dreams lol the only expensive dream is about traveling to far away places, which is one experience , for which I am ready to save and spend when the time comes....

Hullo Kiran;I remembered that my comment to your response was pending when I saw this discussion on the board and here I am .When our tastes are inexpensive it gives us so much of peace.Mine is slightly expensive by normal standards when it is a matter of sarees but that is because I was brought up by my father like that.He bestowed goodies on us and went in for very clasy stuff. And I desire them becaue I can afford them. But except this I don't buy things. I am sure you will fulfil your dreams for travel as and when the time comes. But,I would suggest that you first finish India first[there are some great sight seeing spots in the HImalayas I guess.THanks for the participation.

I only longed for one thing in my life and that is to be with the person that I love i find it expensive for first I have to build a house for us, provide shelter, food and everything follows but the love that both of us share valuable that no money can compare that I dare give all that I have just to be with her..... I am not a materialistic kind of person I can live with little of everything as long as my heart is full and there is only one person who can satisfy it and that is my gf well i think what we have is priceless....

Wish you good luck to attain your dreams of your love and the expensiv e item that you are planning. . But , love is irrespective of what you can afford to give her. Basic comforts of a roof[ not neceaarily your own till you can afford it] food and clothing should be enough and she would say the same thing if she really loves you.

I always go for the best Kala. The best or nothing at all.I am famous for my expensive taste among my friends and family members.I always go for the branded ones and refrain from feeling bad later. I think that buying the best and using them makes you very self assured. This definitely not boasting or arrogance .Hope you will understand .Well I am made that way.

I certainly understand-this is a characteristic and I am also like that in choosing my clothes. I am not interested in any other product except books or an essential item like a mixie/grinder/computer/ and the like and here , we ought to go for the best because the best and branded are normally safe bets.I too feel that wearing good classy clothes makes a person look and feel good. We do it only when we can afford it. I feel it is a spillover of my upbringing .

Well, I must say that my tastes are not very expensive. I believe we can have expensive tastes either if we can afford it ourselves or somebody else is paying for the goodies…I have neither so I try to fit my choices within whatever budget I have. This applies to everything like clothes, shoes, cosmetics, accessories etc…its only where food is concerned that I love to indulge in a little bit of luxury. Food is my only weakness and I don’t mind spending a little extra on it…though I must say that with the current economic downturn, I am having to cut down on my food expenses too!

I don't think I have expensive tastes. There are certain things I like...books, crafts, certain things I collect. I don't go for fancy homes, fancy clothes, trips, exotic foods, or high dollar things. ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS**

The thing is ppl that yearn for those types of things are usually continuously miserable b/c enough is never enough. They always want more. When you find yourself happy with what you have, you more able to enjoy it rather than keep trying to get more. Have a good day! ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS**

My wife and I had worked and saved many years, and we are comfortable financially. We can afford most things but we have not acquired expensive tastes. Most of the time, we live like average families do. Once a while, we pamper ourselves with more expensive clothes or eat at restaurants just to give ourselves a treat. We try and save where we can, and when we cannot afford something, we will rather not have it than to borrow money to buy it. In living this way, we stay out of debt, and have never before taken any loans other than for housing and car, something which everyone takes also, due to the high cost of purchasing them. So I would say our tastes are average and well within our financial means.

I must say that I do, it's rather funny when I go to a restaurant and see what to order, that when I look at the price, it is one of the most expensive meals on the menu. I also love my seafood which is rather expensive than those any other meals.

I do not have the money for my expensive tastes. LOL. I am moving in 2 weeks, and money is tight. Yet I keep getting great ideas for decorating, I chose the expensive couch at the store instead of the cheap set on craigslist. I know I don't have the money for all these fancy things, but I want my house to look good! I want to be proud of where I live. I don't want to feel like I am still living in my college apartment with mismatched furniture, ugly carpet and a fake deer on the wall! But yes. They are starting to make me really long for nice things the more I look at them and realize I can't have them. :-(

Well I must admit that food is my greatest weakness and my taste in food is quite expensive. If I make a proper budgeting of my food expenses, I am sure I am save quite a tidy sum every month, but this is the only thing on which I love splurging. Its not that I can afford all the expensive stuff every month, so I usually rotate them…if I have bought an expensive tub of imported ice-cream this month then that huge pack of yummy meatballs will have to wait for the next month. but I just have to buy something good and tasty and different from what we eat regularly. In our regular food too, I would buy extra stuff which are not compulsory for daily cooking. But otherwise, I am a very frugal person…I have no other addictions like clothes or shoes or cosmetics or jewerllery and such. So I guess I can allow myself a little indulgence but now with things becoming so very expensive, I have had to cut down a lot on my food expenses.

I can understand you. Some people do need variety in the food they eat. As far as I am concerned I do not compromise on the essentially routine stuff. This is always up to a decent standard. But that is the routine one. With nmounting expenses everyone would tend to watch carefully and be happy with what they can easily afford.

I have a vegan diet and shop from about five different supermarkets and health food shops. I buy high quality food like packaged prepared salad is my favorite meal. It has iceberg lettuce, carrot and red cabbage. I add a salad dressing to it and sprinkle roasted pine nuts over it. I eat fancy bars that are made from fruit and nuts. I can happily do budget traveling and buy good value clothing. I wouldn't be able to manage without the Internet, my photography or traveling to foreign countries.

Hi Kala, I am like you dear, a very simple person without many dreams. I have the habit of satisfying with what I have/earned. I don’t mind to give up any tastes without any worries; if I am sure it won’t be possible or can’t be affordable. Internet is really affordable and I have the facility in office and now at home also. Owning a home is a dream and I know it is costly so waiting patiently for that.
