A strict teacher or professor gathers more respect than a soft one.

Do you agree to that statement? I have now been teaching part time at a University here in my area, and have been given a lot of advices on how I should act in front of class especially if I am tasked to teach a bunch of known-to-be-unruly kids. Do you think it's true that a strict teacher gathers more respect? Can you cite instances or personal experiences which proves your answer to that question? Which did you give more respect to - your strict professors and teachers or to those who were friendly?

not very true actually its not necessary to be strict to get respect..........just be natural and friendly with students thats the only way you can understand their problems because they will be sharing their problems only if you are friendly.....but not with the strict teacher because they were scared of them.....and also you are there to solve their problems not just to gain respect.

Yes that is true. STRICT TEACHERS GAIN RESPECT. When I was in elementry school all my teachers were strict so we were scared. Then we had our art teacher who was very quiet and nice. Everybody took control of her. They talked over her and didn't listen to what she had to say. She was one of the nicest teachers, I had ever met and she deserved much more respect. She was very friendly and still is today.
