Former australian fast bowler has described ponting as a "crap" skipper with few supporters. I agree with thompson as i have also said before ponting is not a good captain and always had a bunch of very good players to do the job for him. But now his poor captaincy is magnified so much so thomson has said strauss and england have an advantage as far as leadership is concerned. What do you people think about it ?

ok people. [b] whom u call as a good captain?
tell me.yeah u will say sourav ganguly for leading a troubled side during desperate times.so we will leave him out.
every great captain at one time or another had bowlers and batsmen to do the job.
clive lloyd had the ultimate pace attack and powerfull hitters and won 2 world cups in a row.is he a good captain or a crap because he had such great players in the team?
can u tell me what will happen if sachin, dravid, laxman, bhajji retire from test cricket tomorrow?
the team will definetely struggle and we will lose matches .it will take a lot of time to bring a stabilisation to the team and ofcourse u can call the captain a crap in the mean time.
back to my question
how will u define a good captain?
what are his qualities?
a captain brings fine leg to the position of short leg for a pace bowler.the bolwer will definetely bowl on the leg side.
if he got a nick and caught by the short leg,GREAT CAPTAINCY.
if he got a thick edge and goes for boundary in the fine leg region,WHAT THE HECK IS HE DOING BY PLACING A FIELDER AT SHORT LEG?
captaincy is a gamble.sometimes it works and sometimes it wont.when it works,u r good captain and when it doesnt,u r a crap.
just wait till champions trophy people.u will then see how crap a captain ponting is ?
may be we can make a bet.i can positively say that aussies will make it to the semis of chapions trophy.wanna bet?

yes we will certainly get to see what a crap skipper ponting is in the champions trophy. by the way you do not rate him very highly as well. you have said Australia will make the semi finals of the champions trophy but so will three other teams. so he is only as good as three other captains. what about winning the semis and the finals? you want to know what a good captain is. sourav ganguly as you said is definitely one. remember kapil dev , he propelled his boys to win the world cup when no one gave them a chance so much so one bbc commentator even said he will eat his shoe if India win the world cup. how about steve waugh i know he had a good team too but the players were pretty young then and he moulded them perfectly into a well run unit. anyways that is in the past have you hear about a guy named graeme smith. he did not have great players in his team from the start. barring mark boucher and kallis and gibbs everyone is relatively inexperienced. pollock has retired and what has happened? have they gone down. exactly the opposite they are in first place in the icc rankings for one day cricket.

lol.i am a realist and i know that even ODI matches can go either way and ofcourse some teams are moving up the ladder .thats why i said they will atleast make it to the semis.i believe no crap captain can achieve this in a champions trophy.
besides we are not talking about T20 matches.i dont think aussies played that much ODI after both openers retired.personally i feel this aussie team looks good to win the cup this time.wanna bet?losers drink TEA.YUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i do not drink tea first of all. which works in my favor as i will not be the loser even if i bet. you are speaking as if they have already reach the semi finals. 50 over cricket is different than t20 cricket and not all matches can go either way. let us see if a crap captain can win the champions trophy.

Yes, Ponting has been a very 'lucky' skipper.
When Shane Warne, Gilchrist, Hayden and McGrath were there, he was winning everything, because of each of these players, on their own were matchwinners.
Now with these players retiring, Ponting's real test of character has come out.
why, in fact, he had a problem in the last South African series and lost badly.
He is arrogant, brash and very 'lucky'. Pure lucky guy who has a great talent in batting but in captaining a side, he is pure trash.
Boot him out.
Tommo is right. Ponting is a 'crap' as skipper

yeah a very lucky skipper in fact to have the best team in the world just give to him on a platter. in the last few years a lot of things have come out in the open regarding the arrogance of the aussie players and the character of a lot of players has come under scrutiny.thanks for your response and happy mylotting.

the recent brash behaviour of the Aussie players just shows that they have not accepted the fact that some teams do play better than them.
Ponting's real test came at these times and he failed miserably.
Especially in the Sydney Test against India, when Michael Clarke openly cheated, and Ponting had the audacity to support him!!

Ricky Ponting is an average skipper for me but he is definately not crap. Australia won in the past because of great players and not because of Ricky Ponting's captaincy. With the retirement of these players, his captaincy is being exposed.

Ricky Ponting is truly a great batsman and he has won his team many games only by his captaincy skills. Former players have their right of freedom of expression but then I am sure he could have used less insulting words for such a player. If at all, he could have described him as an "average" skipper.
I am not a Ponting fan and I used to hate him for captaining such an invincible side. but, I am being honest here.

I thin its a bit harsh on any player because if they gives performance everybody encourages them but when ever any player did'nt respond then people says stuff like that. A player is not a machine that gives you 100% all the time so, we must back all the players and Ricky Ponting is a great player and captain.

yeah i really agree with thompson view..i have been telling to my friends that ricky is not fit for nothing....winning many tournaments with warne, mcgrath, gilly is really easy..but now he is really tested and fails miserably.i think he should step down as captain before cricket Australia fires him....

Well, I believe that this comment is a bit harsh . I know that Ricky Ponting
has a certain arrogance and some minuses .
However, credit must be given to him for leading Aussies to a
large number of victories .

I dont agree that Ponting is crap. He is by no means the best, but he is not crap either. He has had a fair share of good fortune no doubt. He has had the luxury of giving the ball to world class bowlers like Warne, and McGrath. He also had top quality batsmen in his line up.
Setting field and making bowling changes is just one side of captaincy. It not that hard to find faults when he is in the field and recently this is more evident with the losses. That aside Ponting has never, backed away from a challenge. His personal performance has never dipped since becoming captain. He has led the way with the bat especially when Australia needed him the most. He leads from the front, which is important as a captain. His winning record is also very good and should not be ignored.

When you have great players like McGrath, Shane Warne, Hayden, Gilchrist etc., captaincy becomes a bit easier. And Ricky had that luxury. But now all those players have retired and new players yet to meet their levels, it is quite obvious that Australia will be vulnerable than earlier. Ricky himself, never seemed an astute captain, he was just direct and pragmatic as his batting is.
Right now he needs to make strategies and plans to use all the players that he has to the maximum effect. So his captaincy will be under scrutiny.
Though he is not in the league of great captains list in cricket, but certainly he is no crap.
