My Desktop PC Gave Up The Ghost

I have had the same computer now for about 10 years and it has done a great job, until I put Vista on it and then it just started crawling.
I thought I would be able to add more RAM but 2GB is all that I could put in it and my demands on my PC are too much for that.
Yesterday it sorta gave up on me and died. Time for a new computer.
I need the help of a few here at Mylot that have purchased newer computers.
I don't care to play games so that's not really an issue, just a working computer that doesn't hang. :)
What should I go with for a DeskTop PC this time around and what should I have in it so that I get the best performance?

Before buying computer ,You have to look into future.Technologies are changing at a fast pace.I think you should go for dual core processor ... AMD X2 is cheaper than Intel core 2 Duo ..I own this and its model is M2A-MX .It has got a good on board graphics

hey your computer was quiet old, i think it has something to do with the motherboard ... it wasn't compatible with running the new vista, for running a vista needs a minimum of 1 gb ram and a compatible mother board and a graphics card or accelerator, and then your vista should be running as the way it is meant to. i think it was your old motherboard which was unable to run the operating system, well if you have a desktop then changing your motherboard would be the option for you...
hope this helps..

WOW you tried Vista on a 20 year old computer. if you read the spec's for Vista you needed at least a duo core processor, and min 1 gig ram, 2 gig better.
Now I have Vista, and got my system built though Dell I dont play many games buy my system is fast and doesn't hang. If you goto dell.com you will be able to build your own to your own spec's. desktop or laptop. that is personal preference. I have a laptop, as I like to go out in the yard and enjoy the sun, and surf the net lol.

Man, I wish I could get a computer to last for ten years! Vista is a memory hog. Maybe the newer microsoft program won't be as bad, at least that's what I hear from people who have tried the beta version. Spend money on more memory, whatever you decide to do, with a newer computer.

Based on what you have mentioned, it's no surprise that vista will perform poorly on your old computer. If your computer isn't made for gameing, I recommend linux or windows xp. If you plan to stick with vista disable those fancy icons like the transparency task bar, disable any apps that are the least helpful you should see an 15% if you followed what I have said.

Wow, you really know how to take care of your puter, 10 years! I can only imagine the board which max to 2GB. Computers these days don't last that long anymore, its not they are lame or something but the support for components these days has a very short life span like DDR,DDR2,DDR3 which require a difference mobo and processor, if you could still find one for sure its more expensive than the new one which is much faster. What would you get then? Whats available! even the specs that's about to be phased out will now do more, speedier and runs vista. Just take into consideration some room(though short) for upgrade. Now face in the direction of for the big guys stuff and select.

I recently replace my PC for an Aspire X1700 (here is a link for the spec on zdnet http://review.zdnet.com/product/desktops/acer-aspire-x1700-u3700a/33508017). I only ever use it for work, which is website development, article writing, graphic design and spreadsheet work. I honestly have no complaints about the PC and is one of the fastest machines I have used. For example it takes less that 20 seconds to start up and have downloaded emails. My only negative would be as part of the package it came with a standard 19" monitor which is extremely bog standard.

you can have a computer that will always meet your requirements. May be you buy a computer with hi-fi configuration might be a slow computer 7 or 10 years later. What matters is you should have vision and try to see what you buy is a standard one and manages your task. Try to contact with some good technical persons and ask them if they can suggest some thing better. What ever piece you purchase. try to see the feedback for those on the web or on papers. Then decide what is best for you.

If you can change a hard drive and a disc drive then I know a way you can get a faster computer for less.
I always buy my parts from pricewatch.com where the prices are really good to begin with but if you need a new computer there are a couple of ways you can go.
First; you can go with a "barebones" kit which is basically the computer case, motherboard, processor, fan, and sometimes you have the option of memory, hard drive, cd/dvd drive, etc. If you can put your drives on or know how to install them and how to install an operating system then you can get a really good deal this way on a new computer. I mean like around $200.00 to $300.00 for a really fast one that only needs the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and depending on the package you get your cd/dvd drive.
Second; if you don't really know how to do that kind of thing then look under the refurbished section and you can find some really good deals there. In the refurbished section it is mostly pentium 4 processors with anywhere from 1.8 Gig to 3.2 Gig but those are pretty good it's just not the new dual processor types. Sometimes you can find a couple of the newer dual processor computers in the refurbished section but they tend to run a little high in price.

If the time for determine is very limited - less than a week. Start with the first 2 days, I'm trying to gather information such as PCworld Magazine or the nearest computer store. By third day, I already setup my configuration dream PC or choose PC brand. Of course, It should be matched with my budget. Mostly, I always look on Dell or Hp desktop premium configuration. But I always remember about PC desktop can stand only for 7 years then we must plan for upgrade or buy a new PC. For Laptop PC is less than 4 years.
By fourth day, I believed you have your dream PC. On My stories, I just goes to Dell Precision/workstation 390. But for my backup for outside home, I loved to choose IBM Thinkpad T60 laptop.
On Fifth day, I just restore my backup data and install software on my new PC. Done ...

The core components of a computer are:motherboard, ram and processor. Your computer's performance is based on these three components. You said that you have 2GB of RAM and your computer still has poor performance. That means your problem is with your processor or motherboard. Running Vista needs higher version of processor and motherboard. so you better check your motherboard and processor instead of buying a newer computer. this will save hell lot of money. hope this works.
have a good day.
