Sci Fi Channel Changing To SyFy Channel 7/7/09 - What does this mean?

I have been watching the Sci Fi Channel today for the annual 4th of July Twilight Zone Marathon and I have been seeing a bunch of commercials advertising that the Sci Fi Channel is changing to the "SyFy Channel" on July 7, 2009. I wonder exactly what this means. I did some investigating as this peaked my curiosity. It appears that the Sci Fi network is wanting to change its "nerdy" image and be more youthful and hip. They targeted a group of 18 to 34 year olds and passed the name "SyFy" to them. They loved it, saying SyFy is actually is how you’d text it in a conversation or text message. The channel is making the name change on 7/7/09 and is also launching the new series “Warehouse 13” the same day. They also stated that the international Sci Fi channels will transition to the new "SyFy" name over the next six to twelve months. The website www.SciFi.com also will make the change to www.Syfy.com. Personally, I think this is a rather stupid idea. I like the name "Sci Fi" Channel. I don't like SyFy. It is more phonetic as opposed to actually representing the actual words "Science Fiction". I feel as though they are "dumbing it down" for the general public. So what do you think of this change? I mean as far as I'm concerned, the only people who truly watch the Sci Fi Channel are the geeky, nerdy people. They really aren't the teenage crowd that visit the mall and text their "BFF's". Have a great day and happy myLotting!!!

I agree with you 100% I don't like the new name either and don't feel they should change it at all. It looks kinda stupid and all saying syfy..they totally asked the wrong group of people..for sure.

Yes they did. I wonder if they will ever go back to the old name if enough people complain about it. I mean there is the old saying, "If it ain't broke don't fix it.". Thanks for your comment and happy myLotting!!!

I agree they shouldn't try to change/fix what isn't broken and worked..I guess it is just their way of trying to be hip and up with the times. But I seriously wished it would stay the same as always.

I dont understand why they would do that. Maybe Im to old to understand it,I am not a teenager any more, but why use letters that have nothing to do with it at all. What do they possibly have to gain from this? I like a lot of the shows on the sci fi channel but the commericals are beyond dumb, now it looks like that is the direction of the entire station.

It is because that is how it sounds, like to rhyme with "my". I personally don't like it and don't want them to change it. I just don't understand why marketing people do things like this. Thanks for your comment and have a nice day!

"Sci-Fi Channel: Where the Coolest Geeks Hangout" - Not just in television channels, 'geeks' and 'nerds' can be cool and chic.

Yeah, I have heard about this shift of names, and I heard what you have stated. Saying that the network is shedding its geeky image and try to be more 'in' with the youngsters.LOL Im loyal to the name 'Sci Fi'. I mean that network name just is 'in your face' kinda name. You already know what to expect and not have to guess what it could be its main show features. As for the term "SyFy", it might be how the youngsters text the word but still,..I dont know, whenever I see that term with that spelling just makes me want to pull out all the Fly Paper Sheets that I can. I really cannot explain the urge.LOL We dont have that channel in our cable service though but I definitely would have been watching that channel for half the time Im spending watching tv. Those kinds of shows really just intrigues me and we also learn something while we watch. The other time would be tuned in on AXN Beyond, more about ghosts and the supernatural.^_^ As for the "dumbing it down" comment, I do agree and it kinda justifies that in order to be 'in' or accepted by most people, some really just try to cover up/change who they really are just to be 'hip' and to 'belong'. Still, that doesnt change who they really are inside, relating to the network, it would still feature science fiction shows, they content would still be geeky. So, why not say that they are the 'coolest geeks' on tv, right? That approach would be more genuine.

I know, they are changing the name, but it is still going to have shows based on Science Fiction related topics. SyFy looks to me like it should be pronounced "siffy" as in "iffy" or "stiffy". Thanks for your comment and happy myLotting!!!

LOL! Perhaps they really should rethink that, either change the name to something other than "SyFy" or not change the name altogether. You're welcome.

It means someone crazy must be in charge since neither the word science or the word fiction have a Y in their spelling.

Everyone and everything is dumbing down. I resent that. And the people gladly accept it because, for the most part, their dumbed down state is more comfortable for them because it means they don't have to think. Warehouse 13 looks like a good series, but I'll see. So many of the SciFi channels offerings, especially the movies, look good but aren't--at least in my opinion. It used to be a better channel, my ex and I watched it a lot years ago and my boys liked it, too. It certainly has changed, and not for the better.

Yes, I have noticed that they are dumbing a lot of things down nowadays. I think that Warehouse 13 looks like it will be good too. And you are right, I think that they show the best scenes from those SciFi channel movies and then you get all excited about seeing it only to figure out once it is over that the movie was just plain awful. Thanks for your comment and happy myLotting!!!

Sci-Fi WANTS the teenboppers?? What is this--no Trekkie would stand for it!! What a sell-out is what I think and can we please stop trying to obliterate the English language completely with these tweets or whatever you call so called 'texting' code--I'm actually an avid texter but feel no need to include three letter 'words' in every sentence and someone should stop this! If anything they'll just brew up some new conspiracy stints for us believers and give us to talk about because---SyFy??? , what does that translate into SNYFY--aka "SONY FINANCIAL HLDGS INC! Nothings suprises me, especially in this industry.

I think that is silly to change the name. Why change it from Sci Fi? It makes sense to be called Sci Fi. I watch this channel all the time and I think it is the nerds and the geeks that watch this station anyways. I have been watching it alot this weekend as they are having the annual 4th of July Twilight Zone Marathon!

That's what they are changing their name to, yuck! I wonder if the programing will change to. You can't please everyone but you can tick off your viewing crowd. They are a channel that choose a specific group to cater to turning on that group could prove fatal, we will just have to wait and see.

Yes, I would have to agree that the nerdy public is the community that they cater to and this is their bread and butter. I think it is stupid for them to go this route. Thanks for your comment and have a nice day!

Yeah it is a stupid idea changing name to Syfy Channel. That doesn't work for me and I fit it the targeted group (closer to 34 than 18). Court Tv did this also chaning name to Tru TV.
