Bali was always on my dream list. In 1998 I visited Bali and it lived up to all expectations. Since then I have been back three times and have seen a steady deterioration in Bali. After last year's experience I would never go back.
Yes, it is still beautiful and worth seeing but it has got much more expensive and the standards have dropped. It was known as the Island of the Gods now in my view it is the Island of the Frauds. Everywhere I went people tried to cheat me. When changing money they always wanted to use a different rate from what was on their board.
In the shops they would agree to a special price and then try to win back the difference by short changing me. Items were taken from my hotel room. The local travel agent overcharged me considerably on flights that he booked. I later proved he was cheating on my main travel agent in Germany and managed to get a refund.
A suitcase left in his care was opened and items removed.
The airport is chaotic. The "Visa on Arrival" service is very complicated and badly organised. Toilet facilities whilst you are waiting to be processed are deplorable.
The streets are badly in need of repair and can be very dangerous. Traffic flow is badly planned in the major tourist areas.
No doubt somebody will still tell you how wonderful Bali is but there are many places in Asia just as beautiful and where service is still reliable and honest.
