Any PC should really have a rest period but yes desktops can handle more than the laptop. They are sitting up and more open to get air flow. You could buy an attachment that your laptop sits on to give it more air. The problem is that it gets so hot and it has very little openings for air to circulate it can mess up your heat sensor, your fan is probably really dirty and it is probably getting way to hot. The attachment for your laptop circulates and cleans the air if you are going to leave it running that long i would suggest that you get one.

my apple macbook pro is left on all day doing strenuous activity. the lid is never closed nor is it in standby. however, to keep it cool when i'm pushing it, I put lego bricks up at the top corners. This gives it a bit of an angle and can help airflow. mine can reach highs of 90 degrees centigrade. thats nearly waters boiling point! just make sure it gets plenty of air and never use it on a soft surface like a cushion or a bed, as this can stop airflow and absorb and release more heat. thats not a good thing! fear not, your laptop will be just fine, just keep it away from soft surfaces and if its hot to the touch put something in the top left and top right corners so hot air can easily escape out the back :)
