How do you do this without using any softwares or adding RAM? I heard that by adjusting the virtual memory to a ratio of 1:1 could speed up a PC. Also by doing a disk clean up and using the disk defragment tool. Are there any other means of speeding up a PC?

The most effective & would speed up your system 100x better... is to disable all the services that you don't use. This can be found in Control Panel/Administrative Tool/Services... But this should be done correctly & you need an aid of a PRO... I will post a relative guide in here to what services can be safely stop, to freed up some memory for your other PC tasks... or you can start following this simple guide to make your PC run faster here- http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/2048001.aspx
It's an old discussion 'bout weeks ago... & I have repliad w/ a simple guide about the topic...hope it helps a bit.

Wow, thanks man. I unchecked those that I'm familiar with, and it did boost my speed up a bit. How about gpedit? Can it help in speeding up my PC? I'm kinda scared to mess with it.

Nope, don't mess w/ it, but if you know what you are doing then it would certainly give you an advantage... I only use GPEdit to adjust my bandwidth resources.

I know you mention software, but there is an awesome free program that does this all for you! IOBit.com has a free program that does all this with one push of the blue button, I've been using this for over a year and think you should check it out! tdemex

I do not know how to adjust the virtual memory. But I often defragment my computer from time to time as well as do a disk check on a scheduled basis. I have an application that called the "uninstaller" and it has a certain feature that usually cleans the computer of any unused files. Have also installed registry mechanic that will eventually check the registry for errors from time to time. I am not an expert in computers or programs so basically, that is just what I do.
