I have a fairly bad case of tendonitis in my right shin. Yup, tennis elbow in my leg! The only way to heal this is to rest the muscle, use it very little. Unfortunately almost everything I do utilizes this muscle. Even driving my car in stop and go traffic will cause a flare up because you use the muscle in your shin to move you foot from peddle to peddle. Anyway, I was hoping for suggestions on how to get cardio excersize that doesn't involve using my leg? I fear this may be hopeless.....

I sympathize with you...there are days I feel like a 150 years old (am only 53)...I have a lot of joint pain and foot pain which makes life fun...NOT....since I sit too much in front of the computer I noticed my whole muscle tone is shot, not as flexible, so contribute a lot of my problems due to inactivity. I also suspect I have RA as my symptoms are identical...so what I'm doing is trying to slowly go back to doing yoga exercises again...and yikes..I'm doing some of the stretching types and find I can't stretch as well as I used to which ticks me off no end. One thing I'm considering though is acupuncture....I'm not into meds, at least not the ones my regular doc wants to give me due to their very severe warnings and side effects..anyway...maybe this is something, that is acupuncture is something you might think about--oh and I know about tendinitis...used to have it on the ball of my foot--it went away after I stopped wearing western type boots which somehow was the culprit

I've always wanted to try yoga, not sure why I don't... do you go to classes or do it at home with a dvd?
I would definitely recommend accupuncture to you! I have not had it for my leg, but I have had it for some pretty fierce migraines I was having. The pills from the doctors weren't doing a thing so I thought I'd give accupunture a go and it worked wonders! I went for a course of treatments accompanied with herbal teas they recommended, I still get the odd headache but they are much less frequent and not nearly as intense. It was a life saver!

I actually had been doing yoga for years...my mother used to watch a yoga program on TV and I copied what she was doing (I was only a young kid then)--for a good many years not only did I do yoga but combined ballet barre exercises (studied ballet..LOL)--it was a good work-out and kept me limber...but then certain circumstances took place in my life and neglected my regiment of exercises for WAY too long. I did manage to get a DVD just a few days ago. "Yoga For Inflexible People"--boy that sure is me..I was watching it just to get a sense of it and found it actually boring--a little TOO slow I thought--there are a number of yoga programs believe it or not on Youtube but it would be hard for me to watch the computer from a distance and try and do the exercises (near-sighted and hate wearing glasses when not in front of the computer) Anyway might at least watch the youtube yoga videos to get a feel for the poses again
Glad to hear the acupuncture worked for you...there are two acupuncturist/herbalists near me..NOW..if they take my health coverage it'd be great--need to find out

there are ways to speed up the healing. warm packs for 20 minutes every hour or so help, it would help bring more blood to the area and will heal it faster. also CoQ10 helps regenerate tissue and produce more energy to heal. cordyseps help regenerate tissue as well.
as for exercises, try sitting on the floor and pushing yourself back with your hands. basically use your hands instead on feet. if yo do it fast it can be a good cardio.

warm pack? I was told to use cold packs to help with the inflammation. Would a warm pack make the inflammation worse? Thanks for the advise on CoQ10, I've looked it up and it sounds like it could be beneficial. I think I'll give it a go. I wasn't aware of it before. cheers!
