On speaking Mandarin in Hong Kong and Guangdong Province of China

I know that the most spoken language in Hong Kong and Guangdong province is Cantonese. In Hong Kong, English is also spoken. However, I know only Mandarin and I want to interact with the locals. Will my Mandarin be understood in those areas? Xie xie ni (Thank you) to all those who will respond, Wo xiang zhi dao. (I would like to know)

Most people in Guangdong and HK can understand Putonghua now. But it's best that you learn to speak their language or at least you should be able to understand most of what they talk in their tongue.
