As some of you might remember, my community has a themed Village day, each year, on the first Saturday in July. You might also remember that last year's theme was Pirates. This year, the first Saturday falls on July 4th, and the theme is Stars And Stripes - USA. I'm waiting for the procession to come past, lead by the Town Cryer, ringing his bell, and calling to all to follow to the field, where the fun day is held. All will be in fancy dress, because they really put their hearts in it. I'll try to get some pics if they come past here as is usual, but they'll have to be from my upstairs window, as I can't get downstairs and outside quickly enough when I hear them coming, lol. They've changed their venue so I'm not certain about their route now, either. I just missed one little girl who was heading for the judging down the pub, dressed as a cheerleader and carrying pom-poms, one dressed as an American Country Gal and a Cowboy followed by a Hawaian Girl. They were too quick for me!
In the evening, there is a barbecue and a barn dance, or similar, which this year, will carry on the American theme. I'm not sure what your equivalent is... probably a Hoe Down! The evening finishes around 10.30 and all the villagers head home, weary, after a long day out with their kids. The atmosphere is great, and I feel so proud that we're supporting American Independence Day.
It only remains for me to wish all my American Friends a wonderful day of celebration, and to my Canadian friends... belated wishes for yours, which I believe was last Wednesday, on the 1st July. You'll all be in my thoughts today, as I'm sure you're in the thoughts of my whole village.
Happy Independence Day!

Well that is very sweet! You know I didnt realize that anyone still had villages and Town cryers and such. Nothing wrong with it at all just seems to me like talk of a story book.

That's quaint olde England for ya! lol. The Town Crier isn't actually our village's, but from Cuckfield, which is a somewhat larger, livelier village about three miles away. Do you know that you have to have a citizen's passport to get preference for certain activities in Cuckfield? That's how quaint it is around here! We still have lots of small villages all across England.
Anyway... the Town Crier wasn't there this year. I don't know why that might be but instead, the parade was led by the three people in the pic, who I think are supposed to be "Uncle Sam", the girl in the middle was playing American tunes on the trumpet... tunes like "Oh, Suzanna", and I don't know what relevance the third lady played but I would imagine he's probably the Mayor of somewhere local and she's his wife.
Lots of people went up to the field earlier, so it looks like being a huge success. Brightest Blessings and thank you for your contribution.

Darkwing,
How generous you and your Village are to celebrate with us in mind. Where do you actually live? It wasn't till I met you and other friends here that I have wished I could have seen and visited your Country. Now I really want to visit you and many others who live beyond the boundaries of my Country. I thought I was happy having seen more of our Country than most have. Now my interest go way beyond. Again, I guess I will travel other Countries through the eyes of my friends here on Mylot.
Are you going to the Bar-B-Q? It sounds like a blast. Happy Village Day. Hugsssss

I live in a little village in West Sussex, called Bolney. It's about 35 miles south of London and between Gatwick Airport, and Brighton, on the south coast. Sort of central south England. I love it here. I live in an upstairs flat, and have half the back garden. At the bottom of the garden is a field of sheep, and a couple of horses have been added recently, so it's very peaceful here, and we have lots of walks into the countryside, and up onto the South Downs. I often walk over to the millponds, about a mile to a mile and a half away, and just sit by the second millpond.
I'll put a pic of the first millpond in here, so you can see how tranquil and lovely it is. There are three millponds, which are not used as a mill now, but which house lots of wildlife, including Canada Geese which breed on an island in the second millpond.
I've visited America...Salem, Oregon to be precise. I spent four weeks there, visted the coast for a weekend, Crater Lake, which I couldn't see because it was snowing a blizzard, lol, and the Columbia Gorge, including Multnomah Falls. I loved the place, but I probably won't get the chance to visit again. My granddaughter spent five days in New York back in April, and she loved it there, too. England holds so much ancient history, stone circles, burial grounds and the like, that I love to just wander around my own country. York is a particularly interesting place too. It's a city built within castle walls.
No, I didn't go to the barbecue because my knee plays me up. I can't stand for any amount of time, let alone dance, lol, so I declined.
I'm probably just firing your desire to come here, my friend, but I do think you would enjoy it. Brightest Blessings, and thank you for your contribution.

My birthday is July 3rd - one day too early!
I think it's lovely to celebrate other people's traditions, so long as we don't forget our own! I'm looking forward to the summer jazz festivals. We have a lot of events over here that try to capture "Old New Orleans" - right down to river boats and trad bands.
Somehow, though, it's not the same on the Medway ...

Oh darn it... I missed it! Belated Birthday Wishes to you, my friend. Does that mean you had your interview and did you visit the Bali Brasserie, or did you forget? lol.
Yes, there do seem to be a lot of Old Orleans bars and eating places scattered around the UK. The Medway would be better than the Rivers Arun or Rother, ha ha ha. Can you imagine? I would love to take a riverboat cruise with a trad band playing. That's the only jazz I like.
Brightest Blessings my friend and thank you for your contribution.

Yes, it was... probably drunken festive but they've all enjoyed themselves on this one, village day and evening of the year, which is the most important thing. I only took four pics but I'll put one in for you, my friend. I took the one in response #1 as well, which I think is "Uncle Sam".
We don't normally celebrate Independence Day greatly but our Village Day is always on the first Saturday in July, and is themed. As it fell on 4th July this year, it was decided that American Independence Day was very appropriate. It seems to have gone down pretty well too. Let's face it, a lot of Americans have roots in Great Britain, so we're like brothers and sisters really, when you think about it.
Brightest Blessings, my dear friend. Hope everything's coming good for you. Take care and thank you for your contribution.
