When, if ever, is the last time you saw snow, or have you never.

Five years ago in snowed in this area for the first time in 35 years so only the older people ever remembered seeing it before. It didn't last long but it looked perfect settling on top of the orange trees. Have you never seen snow, is it an occassional thing or something you see often? Is it an enjoyment or a nuisance?

I live in Newfoundland, Canada so snow is very familiar. I also see icebergs float by and some stay for a while. I don't like snow much because with a long driveway it kills ya to shovel it. Some storms are bad and the snow can be 1o feet high in places where it drifts and sometimes it takes a day or two for the plows to clear the roads. Once we were house-bound for 4 days before we got plowed out. I assume you live somewhere very hot, that would kill me.

I saw snow last winter, it snows every winter here and i love it. many stores and schools close when there is too much snow, love that too. last winter i actually had short day in the clinical because of snow. had a nasty patient that day, so snow helped me a lot.

We have quite a bit of snow every winter in Massachusetts, and as you get older , it becomes quite a nuisance. Unfortunately our winters last longer than any other season, so we do get quite sick of it fast....imagine having to get up in the morning after a 12 inch snow fall, having to track knee deep to your car, having to remove all the snow before you can even get in it, and praying that you won't get stuck driving out of your driveway because the snow plow hasn't come yet. This can go on many times here during the winter. So by the 3rd snow storm, most of us have had it.
The first snow fall is usually very beautiful, everything looks so clean and white, however, that doesn't last very long either...within days, the snow on the streets turn brown and dirty from the cars, and no longer is a beautiful site.
When you are young it can be enjoyable, and I used to have fun in it also, but that was probably because as kids, we didn't do all the grundge work to remove the snow, like shoveling the stairs, and the walkways, and clearing the cars. But when it becomes our responsibility, it is no longer fun.

That does sound like an awful nuisance every winter but as it is a frequent occurence you must have plenty of provision to cope with it and it probably doesn't bring your area to a complete stand still. And on the plus side all that shovelling must keep you fit!

You are right that we are very prepared for it in this state. As soon as November comes, we take out the winter coats, the gloves, the shovels, boots, the sand to put on the icy sidewalks, and the cars all have tires that can drive thru the snow.
But as far as staying fit? lol ...you could be right but I have yet to hear anyone brag about being fit because they've had to shovel all winter...lol...especially when you have to go out late at night, to clean your car, so you can be ready to move it when the snow plow comes. ...I would rather live in a sunshine state wear there is no snow during the winter, so I don't have to deal with it.

Well at least you are always prepared for it! Out here when it snowed that one and only time the most manic drivers (well that's every male here) were reduced to trundling along at about 5 miles an hour, not because the tiny bit of snow brought congestion to the road but because it was such an unknown entity to deal with they hadn't got a clue how their cars would respond.

hi thea09, yes I have lived in a place where there were 4 seasons winter, spring, summer, and fall. I liked to see the color of the leaves changing, as far as snow it is pretty to look at out the window while inside a warm room drinking something hot. But actually having to deal with it is a different story. Where I lived we had all kind of snow light fluffy snow, hard and heavy wet snow, big golf ball freezing cold snow. The best kind of snow for snowman, snow sculptures, and snowballs is the hard, wet and heavy snow because its sticks together. When I was little I love to go out and play in the snow make snow mans, snow ball fights were the best except when you got hit in the face because it was ice cold stung like a bee sting but did not last long. smile But you had to be careful because some of the bad kids would put rocks inside the snowball and yeah that really hurt!!!!!!! The part of snow I hate is the ice freezing snow that it's so cold that it freezes your feet, hands, and the face to the point were you feel it's going to fall off. And I remember the news stories were seniors would get out there and shovel the snow by them selves and they would die due to physical stress and high heart rates. and then there are those times when there is a snow storm and you have to get out and uncover your car, drive way, and side walk. so snow can be both a enjoyment and a nuisance.

Hi apgh, the worst thing I remember about snow is having to leave the house first thing to go to work and the snow had already frozen into solid ice so it was ilike negotiating an ice rink just to get to the station. Then of course you would stand in the freezing snow waiting for a train which was inevitably delayed because of snow on the line. Oh happy memories. It's funny how we only remember the good things about snow from our childhoods isn't it.

In my country (Romania) it snows every winter, so we are used to snow.
People don't take snowing as an enjoyment or as a nuisance - it's just the normal thing to happen.
Snow is a pain in the but for drivers because it creates problems in traffic and sometimes totally blocks roads.
Kids, on the other hand, love snow. It's a joy to go skating on the frozen rivers or take your luge on the hills.
Snow is also useful in agriculture. As it often goes below the freezing point, the snow keeps some of the crops (like the wheat - coming out from the ground during winter) warm. If it weren't for the snow, the crops will freeze.
Snow certainly has its charm... The winter Christmas celebrations wouldn't be the same without snow. A couple of days before Christmas, there's a habit to slaughter the pigs. Do that on mud and it's not a pretty sight... On snow, on the other hand, it's a totally different story. There are also a few days between Christmas' Eve and January the 6th (Saint John's day) when the children go Christmas carolling, and perform other similar traditions, that wouldn't be the same without snow...

Hi stvasile, I actually don't think I'd like the sight of slaughtered pigs on snow, the mud would hide it much more. The way you describe Romania makes it sound very traditional and a pleasant place to live again. It can get very cold here in winter too in the south but not a freezing cold like you fear for the crops, but a damp cold. In the north of the country there is lots of snow.
Now our tradition here on the 6th of January is to follow the Pappas from the church to the harbour where he throws into the sea a large gold cross, on a rope.
No matter how cold it is one of the children has to jump into the sea to retrieve it. In some years the weather has been sunny at the time but I've no idea how they persuaded anyone to jump in this year.

Same tradition yet again, but ours is definitely gold. Our Jan 6ths have been known to be beautiful sunny days but you would NEVER get me in the sea at that time of year. I've never heard of it being done in a river before but it makes sense if you don't have the sea on your doorstep.

The last time I saw snow was just last winter, it snowed so heavy for a long time. I think it was nice to see the first time, everything seems to be so calm and beautifully while but it is not so fun afterwards when it starts melting...it makes the ground so gross...

Wow, was last winter really the first time you saw real snow? I had the idea you were somewhere in the Florida area and never expected it to snow there, I've probably just got your location all wrong. We could still see the snow on the mountain tops here until May as it took so long this year to heat up and melt it but it never came any lower.

If I see snow, I'll be delighted and remember it for the rest of my life. We don't have snow here, only rain, not even frozen even tiny bit. Well, this is a hot country anyway~~~ And I never been to country with snow. It must be a good experience for us we never see snow to see it. But if snow does fall here, something is definitely wrong.

It must be so strange to have never seen snow, i remember it well from my life in England and now we see it on the television each winter in the Northern part of Greece but I doubt we will see it here again. There is snow on the tops of the mountains though until around April which we can see.

Hi thea,
I always saw snow but .... only in movies. The place where I came from there is no snow. Or may have but a human made snow. They build a agricultural park and they have 4 season area. You can found it at Taman Cahaya Sri Alam at Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia.
The only thing you would saw here is drought and flood. But at least we didn't face the snow storm. So, be thankful for what you have and never ask what someone else have.
Happy mylotting and have a nice day.

Hi akuler, I guarantee you would love snow the first time you get to see it for real, the only problem would be walking or driving on it for the first time when you've never been used to it.
Your agricultral park sounds good with its four seasons so I take it that is where you've seen man made snow. Drought and floods seem much more severe, we have some flooding here when there's days of rain and sometimes the cars can get washed out to sea.

Sweetie, it snows here every single, stinking, lousy winter!
But unfortunately, I choose to stay here and continuing to blame my parents, and ancestors for choosing this area of the world to live.
It sounds mysterious to some, when we describe the little white things that fall from the sky. And the first snowfall of the winter is certainly pretty.
HOWEVER...it quickly becomes a nuisance...you have to shovel after every storm, so you can drive your or even walk in it...you have to go very early in the morning to brush the snow off your car, in time to go to work....we track it in the house on our shoes, so it makes a mess on the floors...and within days, the pretty white snow looks dirty and filthy on the sides of the roads caused by the exhaust coming from the cars.
Snow is not enjoyable unless you are skiier, or love snow activities like snowbiling, etc....or if you are a child. A child doesn't have to do all the chores that go with snow, all they have to do is play in it...have snowball fights, build snow forts, etc. And since I am none of this, I look at snow as a nuisance!

Hello sweetchariot, this discussion is from about a month ago and it's just popped back up and I hate to tell you we've already corresponded about this, just above. Don't worry though, I nearly do the same many times. With this response though I'd say why not go out in it for a bit and enjoy iike the children do, the next time you get it, just to appreciate the nice side of snow again, before the nuisance factor hits home

Dear thea,
The first snow I have ever seen and touched was when I was 25 years old.
I and my husband was having our honey-moon at Central Europe. That morning
we were having our buffet breakfast at one of the tourist hotel in Austria.
As my husband & I taking the food from the buffet spread which is set at
the window, we saw beautiful snow snowing outside the window. We quickly
eat as fast as possible those food that we had just taken and rushed out
to feel and catched the snow. Somehow or rather we are suddenly turn into
small children with so much joy and fun playing in the snow, busy snapping
photos with snow...Wow, an unforgettable experience of a life time
Our second snow was with my son 3 years back in a tourist attraction -
Korean Olden Palace in South Korea. I can see my son looking in amzement at
the soft snow snowing on his plam as he open both his palms to hold the snow.
He told me he would like to see snow again and this time he will bring a
magnifying glass to look at the snowflakes
It will be fun to see snow but heavy snow do have setback on travelling
and inconvenienced the people. Malaysia do not have real snow' but we have
two theme parks that houses 'snow house' with 'fake snow'...lol

Hi Iriene, that is wondeful that you were able to have your honeymoon in Austria and see your first snow there at the same time, it must have been a really memorable experience for you, maybe you'll be lucky enough to go back there for a second honeymoon and see snow there again.
I hadn't thought of South Korea as being a tourist place, you've suprised me with that. I hope your son has plenty of chances to see real snow again.

I havent seen a snow fal yet. I wanted to experience one particularly after one of my friends said about her experience.
I think it is quite romantic to see snow fall because whnever I have seen it (on tv) there was always a love angle to it hi hi.
I have experienced hailstorms though...It is dangerous and there isnothing much to enjoy till it stops...After the rain stops howerever, it is fn to pick up natural ice rocks and play with them.

Hi malpoa, we had massive hailstones like golf balls one day last winter which was the first time I'd seen anything like that in Greece, my son was running outside to bring them into the house. Snow can look lovely, even when we don't have it here it lines the tops of the mountains further north well into April and is a beautiful sight. There is a lot of snow in Northern Greece though and on the TV it shows the many accidents on the roads it causes. But to experience your first snowfall will be something special to remember.

Hi Malpoa, I think my son was safe in the hailstorm as we have a large wooden sun roof on the terrace outside the door and he was under that grabbing the ones which landed on the table.
Cold feet in the snow, rather to be expected even though it's a totally different feeling to damp cold. The trick is lots of socks unless you want to end up with frostbite.

I havent seen snow fall but snow, yes I did. The new snow forming in the beginnning of the winter. It was in last october. We had been to this hill station called Manali in the state of Himachal preadesh (the place's name translates into region of mountains or himalayas)It was my first time to see snow and that too above 3500feet, I couldnt manage well there because of the pressure diffrence and the boots I was wearing let all the cold pass to my feet. It was a sight to see the mountains covered in snow with the sun rays passing inbetween the clouds to give the glare...
Hailstorms can be dangerous, I heard large pieces fall sometimes and evn kill humans and animals. I think it is better to stay indoors during hailstorms.

It has been too long. I think the last time I saw snow was two Decembers ago. I moved from the Northwest to a more tropical climate, but I really miss the snow sometimes. Back then it could be a nuisance, but now, i know I would enjoy having some around a bit.

I adore the snow even though it causes me mobility problems. Here in the UK we usually get a few snow falls between January and March but for me it never lasts long enough. There is something peaceful about waking up and seeing the grass covered with snow.
The strange thing is I remember as a child getting lots of snow for weeks on end and people still going about their business, getting to work, doing the shopping etc etc. But these days if we get the slightest sign of a snow flake everything seems to grind to a halt.
@thea09 (18305)

Absolutely, when I worked in a city in the UK the first sighting of snow brought everything to a total halt, offices emptied eary as all the public transport instantly stopped and they never remembered to salt the roads in advance even though the local councils all had those special vehicles for salting the roads. I think we probably remember the less hassle free snow of childhood as there were not nearly so many cars on the road then.

I've seen snow a few months ago and this is because I live in New York city and it usually snows during that time of the year. But it wasn't heavy. I really would like it if there was a snow storm but I don't think I should say that if indeed it would hurt our area which I now sound ambivalent. Anyway, I love snow and I think it's an enjoyment for me.
