Favourite childhood flavour not as good as I remembered.

Today we took a break from the sweltering heat to enjoy a coffee and ice cream in the big town nearby. I saw pistachio which I haven't had since I was a child and tried a scoop of it today. It was quite tasty but not as good as I remembered it and I wish I'd gone for my original pick of mocca. Do you think that childhood flavours really are as good as we remember or is it more a case of our tastebuds changing as we get older? On the opposite scale I never liked strawberry ice cream as a child and it certainly hasn't improved to me now.

Quite often I feel the same that things do not taste as good as in my childhood. And people around share the similar opinion. There might be two reasons. One is with age and health change, our sensing organs are deteriating, at least it is true with me. But mostly because of the chemicals for the plants, and the intakes for the animals. In extreme cases, some chickens are smelling fishy, which is directly related with how they are fed.

That's interesting. Very glad to report I haven't come across any fishy chickens yet, the chickens here have more of a chicken flavour than the ones in the UK.

For those of us with access to this name brand, BLUE BUNNY has a flavor of ice cream that tastes exactly like the pistachio that I used to get when I was a kid. The flavor is PISTACHIO ALMOND. I usually only find it at WalMart. It's exactly like I remember - green and super yummy!

I would say that as we age our tastes change as well, sometimes we ruin are own ability to taste due to smoking or medication. As a child I hated the taste of coffee but these days really like it. Thinking of ice-cream when I was a child I absoluted adored mint choc chip and it was always my number 1 choice. These days it never lives up to my expectations and I would say this down to my tastes changing and also in the way it is manufactured.

Ah I'm right there with you on the coffee my friend. I used to hate the very smell of it and never tasted a cup till I was 18. I then realised that what I hated was the smell of milk in it. Once I discovered fresh ground black coffee I was hooked. Now I'm a coffee addict with my Greek coffees. You've made me fancy a mint choc chip right now, that's something I haven't tasted for years and not seen in our favoutite place which must have at least 30 flavours of ice cream. One of these days I will have to put the ice cream maker back into use but there's never any room for it as the freezer is always full of fish.

My childhood flavors for ice cream were Pistachio, and Black raspberry, but I too don't enjoy them as much. I think when we are young, we like the taste of sweet things, but as we get older, we sway away from those yucky sweet tastes. Instead we look for refreshing tastes. I used to love purple popisicles, and had one the other day. Definitely not the flavor that I would pick anymore. Now I go for the orange, or the lime.

Hi sweetchariot, tastes do change from sweeter things to less sweet on the whole I would say. I hate any artificial sweet tastes which is why I never touch pop, but when we stopped yet again in town today I opted for tiramisu which was quite sweet and I did enjoy it. The pistachio is now my son's favourite which really took me by suprise and he opts for it every time. Talk about inflation though, in just two weeks the price of one scoop at my favourite coffee place has gone up 20 cents. On the other hand their coffee has been the same price for six years.

My childhood favorite would be classic vanilla ice cream and hasn't change a bit in my part. I rarely ate chocolate ice cream because the flavor is overpowering and it's kinda bitter in my opinion, but as i grow older, i starting to like chocolate ice cream even more right now. I almost forgot that i also like other flavors as i grow older in a gradual pace.

Yes vanilla can always be good though my absolute favourite is frozen vanilla yogurt ice cream with the black of the vanilla pods added.

I think its only our tastebuds who changed. Ice cream still tastes so delicious. As you get older you had a lessen likeness to this, I think so. Many people love ice cream specially the kids. What was on that ice cream why it becomes the most favorite by people around the world?

Hi jilbau, whilst I probably won't bother with the pistachio again it has now become my sons favourite 1) it tastes good 2) it is the same colour as the football team he supports. Personally I've probably had more ice-cream in the last few weeks than I've had in the last few years but am now stuck on mocca with my coffee. Tastebuds do indeed change, I used to hate coffee, now I'm an addict.

I know what you mean, and think that it could be several different things. As you said, our tastebuds do change as we get older, but also very few things are made with exactly the same ingredients or in exactly the same way as they used to be. Even milk is different, it usually has far less fat in it than it used to. Milk can taste different at different times of the year, as the cattle are eating different grass etc.

You are probably right katsalot, or maybe it is just made differently here in Greece than it used to be in the UK.

yes our tastebuds change as we grow old....tastebuds "die" as we grow old...have you noticed that when we are kids, we like sweets but as we grow older, we prefer other tastes such as salty or umami over sweet tastes...this is a manifestation that our tastebuds change as we grow old...by the way i love pistachio flavors but my favorite is chocolate and mocha..chocolate was a fave since i was akid but mocha was an acquired fave when i grow older.

Seems different for me. My childhood flavor was cookies'n'cream and always has been my fav flavor. To this day it actually seems to have gotten better. Not sure what it is but everytime I try it, it seems to taste better than it has before. I also try different brands from time to time. if I find one that taste better I move to that brand.

Do you think that some of it may be the memories that are associated with the foods tat we eat? I know, now, that there are foods that I hated while I was a child, but I think some of that is that Mom always made us eat everything on our plate and to make sure that we tried everything that was there. Being forced to eat can take a lot of the pleasure from foods. I used to love sweet corn on the cob, and now I feel that it is just as good off the cob. I hated tomatoes but I love them now. I don't know, maybe it isn't Mom's fault! LOL hehe

Interesting, I used to hate tomatoes too but now eat them every day, but I don't bother with the soggy pips bit, I think that bit made me squeamish about tomatoes. I once asked my mum to buy honey and it was the thick horrid kind I've only ever seen in England rather than the runny kind. I hated it and never tried honey again till last year when I started putting it in yogurt and have become totally addicted.
