The only way to break up, "cute" is if both people agree that its not working on a lighter end. I've heard of two "cute" break ups.
One: A friend of mine decided to date her best friend of 12 years. They had known each other in elementary school and after graduating high school, they ended up in the same college and started to like each other. After 4 months of dating, they were away on vacation and they were lying on the bed in a hotel room. They were playing truth or dare with each other. He asked her, "Do you ever think that we are better as friends?" She said yes. He said, "I hope this break up doesn't mean I'll lose my best friend." They kissed and have stayed best friends ever since. She is actually his "best man" in his wedding to his new love.
Two: A friend of a friend was dating someone for about two weeks. They went on a double date with some people they met online. I believe it was a craigslist posting for another couple to hang out with. The couple that came, had just started dating as well, I think it was even a first date for them. As the night went on, the couple would had been together for two weeks started gaining a lot of interests in the the other couple's individuals. When the other couple had to get up, they discussed how they felt and broke the other couple up and kept the pieces for themselves.
